Abstract

We study the dynamics of an ensemble of $N$ two-level emitters undergoing collective decay at rate $Γ$ and collective incoherent pumping at rate $R$, confined to the fully symmetric Dicke ladder. Although the population dynamics are confined to a finite set of rate equations, their quantum-trajectory representation involves infinitely many pump-decay histories. We derive an exact finite continued fraction for the Laplace-transformed Dicke-state populations by resumming the infinitely many quantum trajectories generated by competing pump and decay processes. Our construction provides a physically transparent interpretation of the tridiagonal resolvent and extends to arbitrary permutationally symmetric initial states. In the strong- and weak-pumping regimes, we obtain perturbative transient solutions. We also identify exact relaxation eigenvalues and emission observables at balanced pump and decay strengths. Our solution provides a starting point for extending trajectory-based analytical methods to more general driven-dissipative collective systems.

AI Summary

The paper studies transient populations of $N$ two-level emitters subject to collective decay at rate $\Gamma$ and collective incoherent pumping at rate $R$, restricted to the fully symmetric $J=N/2$ Dicke ladder. Although populations obey $N+1$ classical birth–death equations, their quantum-trajectory expansion contains infinitely many pump–decay histories. The central construction organizes these histories into nested closed excursions and resums them into finite continued fractions for the Laplace-transformed populations. Equivalent tridiagonal-determinant expressions connect the trajectory construction to the rate-matrix resolvent. An appendix extends the construction from the ground state to arbitrary Dicke-diagonal initial populations. For $R,\Gamma>0$, similarity to a symmetric Jacobi matrix establishes real, nondegenerate eigenvalues, giving at most $N+1$ relaxation modes. At balanced pumping, $R=\Gamma$, Hahn polynomials yield the population eigenvalues $\lambda_j=-\Gamma j(j+1)$, $j=0,\ldots,N$. Detailed balance gives geometric steady-state populations, uniform at balance. There, the emission rate is $\Gamma N(N+2)/6$, $g^{(2)}(0)\to6/5$ for large $N$, and quantum regression gives a Lorentzian spectrum with full width at half maximum $2\Gamma$. Weak pumping from the ground state gives $I(t)\simeq RN[1-e^{-\Gamma Nt}]$; strong pumping reduces at leading order to pure upward Dicke dynamics. For generic unequal rates, the relaxation eigenvalues remain an implicit finite spectral problem rather than a simple closed expression. General-rate spectra require coherence-sector propagation. Coherent driving, local dissipative channels, and more complicated collective systems are proposed extensions, not treated here.

Error found: The Model section incorrectly says that a permutationally symmetric initial density operator remains Dicke-diagonal: symmetric initial states can possess coherences that persist during evolution, although these coherences do not affect the closed population dynamics.

A compact analytical solution of the Dicke superradiance master equation via residue calculus

Raphael Holzinger, Claudiu Genes

Abstract We revisit the Dicke superradiance problem, where an ensemble of N identical two-level systems undergoes collective spontaneous decay. While an exact analytical solution has been known since 1977, its algebraic complexity has hindered practical use. Here we present a compact, closed-form solution that expresses the dynamics as a finite sum over residues or, equivalently, a complex contour integral. The method yields explicit populations of all Dicke states at arbitrary times and system sizes, and generalizes naturally to arbitrary initial conditions. Our formulation is computationally efficient and offers structural insights into the role of spectral degeneracies and Lindbladian eigenmodes in collective decay.

Symbolic Quantum-Trajectory Method for Multichannel Dicke Superradiance

Raphael Holzinger, Nico S. Bassler, Julian Lyne +2 more

We solve Dicke superradiance with two or more competing collective decay channels of tunable rates using a symbolic quantum-trajectory construction. The method yields closed time-domain populations and observables as finite combinations of exponential terms for arbitrary numbers of emitters and arbitrary decay rates. For two channels, the behavior of the stationary ground-state distribution resembles a first-order phase transition at the point where the channel-rate ratio is equal to unity. For balanced $d$-channel decay, we obtain scaling laws for the superradiant peak time and intensity. These results unify and extend single-channel Dicke dynamics to multilevel emitters and provide a compact tool for cavity and waveguide experiments, where permutation-symmetric reservoirs engineer multiple collective decay paths.

Collective decay of interacting bosons

Bennet Windt, Lorenzo Rossi, Alexander V. Poshakinskiy +2 more

We study a bosonic analog of the paradigmatic Dicke model of superradiance, comprising interacting bosonic modes subject to fully symmetric collective decay. Depending on the interaction strength, we uncover qualitatively distinct regimes of emission. For strong interactions, the emission closely resembles Dicke superradiance, with perturbative corrections arising from the presence of additional levels. For weaker interactions, the bosonic statistics qualitatively changes the dynamics, leading to a crossover to subradiant emission. Remarkably, we show that the dynamics in this regime can be described by rate equations analogous to those of the Dicke model despite the large accessible bosonic Hilbert space. Our findings are based on a combination of analytical arguments and large-scale numerics enabled by the permutational symmetry of the problem and may be probed in circuit QED experiments.

Solving Dicke superradiance analytically: A compendium of methods

R. Holzinger, Nico S. Bassler, Julian Lyne +3 more

We present several analytical approaches to the Dicke superradiance problem, which involves determining the time evolution of the density operator for an initially inverted ensemble of $N$ identical two-level systems undergoing collective spontaneous emission. This serves as one of the simplest cases of open quantum system dynamics that allows for a fully analytical solution. We explore multiple methods to tackle this problem, yielding a solution valid for any time and any number of spins. These approaches range from solving coupled rate equations and identifying exceptional points in non-Hermitian evolution to employing combinatorial and probabilistic techniques, as well as utilizing a quantum jump unraveling of the master equation. The analytical solution is expressed as a residue sum obtained from a contour integral in the complex plane, suggesting the possibility of fully analytical solutions for a broader class of open quantum system dynamics problems.

Exact damping-basis continued fractions for few-atom lasers: collective correlations beyond second-order cumulant closure

Stephan Hartmann

We combine the Briegel--Englert damping basis of a lossy cavity mode with the permutation-invariant Liouville basis of \(N\) identical, incoherently pumped two-level emitters. The resulting Liouvillian is exactly block tridiagonal in a single radial field index, with atomic blocks of dimension \(\binom{N+3}{3}\). The stationary state follows from a matrix continued fraction whose asymptotic closure is a linear matrix equation that we prove to be uniquely solvable throughout the dissipative regime \(A>0\), and the same construction in the coherence-one sector yields the emission spectrum. The method is validated against direct diagonalization, weak-pump perturbation theory, and closed-system spectra, reaches \(N=16\) in tens of seconds in the few-quanta regime, and has a quantified precision limit at large photon number. We use it to derive an exact two-atom photon-balance identity that isolates the cavity-induced pair coherence and relates it to a singlet--triplet population difference; to establish an exact pump-order hierarchy of connected correlations for a zero-temperature cavity and a parity property of the minimal collective-spin sector; and to benchmark the second-order cumulant closure used in few-emitter laser theory, which we find to be semi-quantitative for the photon number but to predict the wrong sign of the inter-emitter coherence above inversion. In a good-cavity regime the exact solution shows near-Poissonian statistics and strong line narrowing for two and three emitters.

Superradiant Mpemba Relaxation in a Dicke Ladder

Matheus G. H. Santos, Hugo Sanchez, Italo M. de Araújo +3 more

The Mpemba effect occurs when a state initially farther from stationarity overtakes a closer one during relaxation. We show that this anomalous ordering can coexist with superradiant emission in a collectively damped ensemble of two-level systems. In the symmetric Dicke manifold, zero-temperature decay is a population cascade with rates $Γn(N-n+1)$. We construct the sparse family $ρ_A=|\lceil2N/3\rceil\rangle\langle\lceil2N/3\rceil|$ and $ρ_B=(|0\rangle\langle0|+|N\rangle\langle N|)/2$. Although $A$ is initially more energetic and more distant from the stationary ground state, it crosses $B$ in both energy and trace distance because it starts in a more radiative region of the Dicke ladder. Both states develop emission peaks larger than their independent-emitter references. The crossing persists for all examined sizes from $N=6$ to $60$, while the peak intensities show an effective scaling close to $N^2$. The same pair has no crossing under independent decay, identifying collective radiative kinetics as the origin of the effect.
