Abstract

Abstract We revisit the Dicke superradiance problem, where an ensemble of N identical two-level systems undergoes collective spontaneous decay. While an exact analytical solution has been known since 1977, its algebraic complexity has hindered practical use. Here we present a compact, closed-form solution that expresses the dynamics as a finite sum over residues or, equivalently, a complex contour integral. The method yields explicit populations of all Dicke states at arbitrary times and system sizes, and generalizes naturally to arbitrary initial conditions. Our formulation is computationally efficient and offers structural insights into the role of spectral degeneracies and Lindbladian eigenmodes in collective decay.

Solving Dicke superradiance analytically: A compendium of methods

R. Holzinger, Nico S. Bassler, Julian Lyne +3 more

We present several analytical approaches to the Dicke superradiance problem, which involves determining the time evolution of the density operator for an initially inverted ensemble of $N$ identical two-level systems undergoing collective spontaneous emission. This serves as one of the simplest cases of open quantum system dynamics that allows for a fully analytical solution. We explore multiple methods to tackle this problem, yielding a solution valid for any time and any number of spins. These approaches range from solving coupled rate equations and identifying exceptional points in non-Hermitian evolution to employing combinatorial and probabilistic techniques, as well as utilizing a quantum jump unraveling of the master equation. The analytical solution is expressed as a residue sum obtained from a contour integral in the complex plane, suggesting the possibility of fully analytical solutions for a broader class of open quantum system dynamics problems.

Exact Analytical Treatment of Collectively Pumped Dicke Superradiance

Avishi Poddar, Nico Baßler, Julian Lyne +4 more

We study the dynamics of an ensemble of $N$ two-level emitters undergoing collective decay at rate $Γ$ and collective incoherent pumping at rate $R$, confined to the fully symmetric Dicke ladder. Although the population dynamics are confined to a finite set of rate equations, their quantum-trajectory representation involves infinitely many pump-decay histories. We derive an exact finite continued fraction for the Laplace-transformed Dicke-state populations by resumming the infinitely many quantum trajectories generated by competing pump and decay processes. Our construction provides a physically transparent interpretation of the tridiagonal resolvent and extends to arbitrary permutationally symmetric initial states. In the strong- and weak-pumping regimes, we obtain perturbative transient solutions. We also identify exact relaxation eigenvalues and emission observables at balanced pump and decay strengths. Our solution provides a starting point for extending trajectory-based analytical methods to more general driven-dissipative collective systems.

Symbolic Quantum-Trajectory Method for Multichannel Dicke Superradiance

Raphael Holzinger, Nico S. Bassler, Julian Lyne +2 more

We solve Dicke superradiance with two or more competing collective decay channels of tunable rates using a symbolic quantum-trajectory construction. The method yields closed time-domain populations and observables as finite combinations of exponential terms for arbitrary numbers of emitters and arbitrary decay rates. For two channels, the behavior of the stationary ground-state distribution resembles a first-order phase transition at the point where the channel-rate ratio is equal to unity. For balanced $d$-channel decay, we obtain scaling laws for the superradiant peak time and intensity. These results unify and extend single-channel Dicke dynamics to multilevel emitters and provide a compact tool for cavity and waveguide experiments, where permutation-symmetric reservoirs engineer multiple collective decay paths.

Exact solution of the superradiance master equation. II. Arbitrary initial excitation

Ching Tsung Lee

The cooperative spontaneous emission from a system of $N$ identical two-level atoms, excited arbitrarily and interacting with a single mode of radiation, is studied by using the Bonifacio-Schwendimann-Haake approach. The evolution of the probability distribution of the atomic system is considered as a Markov process described by a time-evolution matrix (TEM). The exact analytic expressions for the elements of this TEM are obtained by solving the superradiance master equation. It is proved that the TEM satisfies the normalization condition and the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation as required. The exact general formulas for the expectation values of various physical observables, expressed in terms of an arbitrary initial distribution, are obtained. Finally, these results are applied to a specific example, the superradiant initial state.

Absence of entanglement growth in Dicke superradiance

Nico S. Bassler

Dicke superradiance describes an ensemble of N permutationally invariant two-level systems collectively emitting radiation with a peak radiated intensity scaling as N 2 . Individual Dicke states are typically entangled. However, the density matrix during superradiant decay is a mixture of such states, raising the subtle question of whether the total state is entangled or separable. We resolve this by showing analytically that for any N , starting from the fully excited state, the collective decay preserves separability for all times. This answers a longstanding question on the role of entanglement in Dicke superradiance and underscores that, despite collective dissipation, separable states remain separable under these dynamics.

Exact solution of the superradiance master equation. I. Complete initial excitation

Ching Tsung Lee

The cooperative spontaneous emission from a completely excited system of $N$ identical two-level atoms is studied under the condition that the cooperation number is conserved. The master equation for such a system has been solved analytically. The exact expressions for the probability distribution and the expectation values of various observable physical quantities are presented. Through a power-series expansion of the exact photon-number expectation value and by using properties of Stirling numbers of the second kind, it is shown that our result agrees with that of Haake and Glauber asymptotically. As by-products, some new identities involving binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the second kind have also been obtained. The exact solution of the same master equation for arbitrary initial conditions will be presented in a subsequent publication.
