Abstract

Given Hermitian observable $A$, the variance of $A$ is given by the difference of expectations $\langle A^2\rangle - \langle A\rangle^2$, where the expectation of an observable implicitly assumes a choice of state for the underlying system. As a sub-case of a general lower bound for the sum of variances for finitely many arbitrary elements in a $C^*$-algebra, we prove that the sum of the variances for $d$ observables $A_1, \dots , A_d$ is greater than some expression in the expectations $\langle i[A_j,A_k]\rangle$ for $j\neq k$ plus the square of the smallest singular value of the associated localizer. In special cases, this expression is just a root mean square average. Our technique also derives a general containment between the Clifford pseudospectra and quadratic pseudospectra for $d$ observables.

Stronger sum uncertainty relations for non-Hermitian operators

Xiao-Feng Song, Yi-Fang Ren, Shuang Liu +2 more

The uncertainty relations (URs) of two arbitrary Hermitian and non-Hermitian incompatible operators represented by the product of variances have been confirmed theoretically and experimentally in various physical systems. However, the lower bound of the product uncertainty inequality can be null even for two noncommuting operators, i.e., a trivial case. Therefore, for two incompatible operators over the measured system state, the associated URs regarding the sum of variances are valid in a state-dependent manner, and the lower bound is guaranteed to be nontrivial. Although the sum URs formulated for Hermitian and unitary operators have been affirmed, the general forms for arbitrary non-Hermitian operators have not yet been investigated. This study presents the sum URs for non-Hermitian operators acting on system states using an appropriate Hilbert-space metric. The compatible forms of our sum inequalities with the conventional quantum mechanics are also provided via the $G$-metric formalism. Concrete examples illustrate the validity of the proposed sum URs in both $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phases. The developed methods and results can help give an in-depth understanding of the usefulness of $G$-metric formalism in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and the sum URs of incompatible operators within.

Geometric and algebraic origins of additive uncertainty relations

Konrad Szymański, Karol Życzkowski

Abstract Constructive techniques to establish state-independent uncertainty relations for the sum of variances of arbitrary two observables are presented. We investigate the range of simultaneously attainable pairs of variances, which can be applied to a wide variety of problems including finding exact bound for the sum of variances of two components of angular momentum operator for any total angular momentum quantum number j and detection of quantum entanglement. Resulting uncertainty relations are state-independent, semianalytical, bounded-error and can be made arbitrarily tight. The advocated approach, based on the notion of joint numerical range of a number of observables and uncertainty range, allows us to improve earlier numerical works and to derive semianalytical tight bounds for the uncertainty relation for the sum of variances expressed as roots of a polynomial of a single real variable.

State-independent uncertainty relations

Hubert de Guise, Lorenzo Maccone, Barry C. Sanders +1 more

The standard state-dependent Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty-relation lower bound fails to capture the quintessential incompatibility of observables as the bound can be zero for some states. To remedy this problem, we establish a class of tight (i.e., inequalities are saturated) variance-based sum-uncertainty relations derived from the Lie algebraic properties of observables and show that our lower bounds depend only on the irreducible representation assumed carried by the Hilbert space of state of the system. We illustrate our result for the cases of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra, special unitary algebras up to rank 4, and any semisimple compact algebra. We also prove the usefulness of our results by extending a known variance-based entanglement detection criterion.

Uncertainty relations for several observables via the Clifford algebras

V. V. Dodonov

New sum and product uncertainty relations, containing variances of up to five observables, but not containing explicitly their covariances, are derived. New inequalities for three observables, especially for the angular momentum and spin-1/2 operators, are also presented.

Stronger classes of sum uncertainty and reverse uncertainy relations

Chiranjib Mukhopadhyay, Arun Kumar Pati

Uncertainty relations are old, yet potentially rewarding to explore. By introducing a quantity called the uncertainty matrix, we provide a link between purity and observable incompatibility, and derive several stronger uncertainty relations in both forward and reverse directions for arbitrary quantum states, i.e., mixed as well as pure, and arbitrary incompatible quantum observables, none of which suffer from the problem of triviality. Besides the tightness, the interpretations of terms in these uncertainty relations may be of independent inter- est. We provide the possible generalization of stronger uncertainty relations to sum of variances of more than two observables. We also demonstrate applications of techniques used here to, firstly, obtain a simple reverse quantum speed limit for quantum states undergoing Markovian dynamical evolution, and secondly, to provide a lower bound for fidelity between two quantum states.

A Note on the Strong Unitary Uncertainty Relations

Ting-Gui Zhang

Uncertainty relations satisfied by the product of variances of arbitrary n oservables have attracted much attention. In a recent article [Phys.Rev.Lett.120,230402(2018)], the authors provided so called strong unitary uncertainty relations for a set of unitary matrices by using the positivity property of the Gram matrix, from which uncertainty relations satisfied by two quantum mechanical observables are obtained. We derive the explicit uncertainty relations satisfied by n quantum mechanical observables from such Gram matrix approach.By some algebraic transformations, we show that these uncertainty relations are just the same as the ones derived from a positive semi-definite Hermitian matrix generated by the mean values of n observables in [Scientific Reports 6,31192 (2016)].

Given Hermitian observable AAA, the variance of AAA is given by the difference of expectations ⟨A2⟩−⟨A⟩2\langle A^2\rangle - \langle A\rangle^2⟨A2⟩−⟨A⟩2, where the expectation of an observable implicitly assumes a choice of state for the underlying system. As a sub-case of a general lower bound for the sum of variances for finitely many arbitrary elements in a C∗C^*C∗-algebra, we prove that the sum of the variances for ddd observables A1,…,AdA_1, \dots , A_dA1,…,Ad is greater than some expression in the expectations ⟨i[Aj,Ak]⟩\langle i[A_j,A_k]\rangle⟨i[Aj,Ak]⟩ for j≠kj\neq kj=k plus the square of the smallest singular value of the associated localizer. In special cases, this expression is just a root mean square average. Our technique also derives a general containment between the Clifford pseudospectra and quadratic pseudospectra for ddd observables.
