Abstract

In de Sitter static patch holography, coupling bulk quantum fields to an observer's dynamical clock yields a type II$_1$ von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}_+$ of gauge-invariant observables. However, the unique tracial state on this algebra fails to reproduce semiclassical bulk correlation functions. We resolve this issue by introducing a family of heavy-clock states, representing an observer reference frame with heavy inertia. We prove that in the heavy-clock limit, $n$-point correlation functions of gauge-invariant dressed observables reproduce the bulk quantum field correlation functions on de Sitter spacetime. Furthermore, we investigate a generalized observer Hamiltonian $\widehat{H}_{\rm obs}=|\widehatπ|$ that incorporates both forward-running ($π\geq 0$) and backward-running ($π<0$) clocks. The resulting von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ of gauge-invariant observables remains a type~II$_1$ factor and is isomorphic to $\mathcal{M}_+\otimes M_2(\mathbb{C})$, where $M_2(\mathbb{C})$ is the algebra of $2\times2$ complex matrices transforming between the two clock orientations. Time-reversal symmetry is implemented in this setting as an anti-unitary operator that exchanges the two clock orientations, yielding a type~II$_1$ von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{F}$ of gauge-invariant, time-reversal-invariant observables. We generalize the heavy-clock state construction to both $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{F}$, showing that $n$-point correlation functions calculated in heavy-clock states match the corresponding semiclassical bulk correlation functions. Finally, by coupling Einstein gravity to the Brown--Kuchař dust field, we derive the observer Hamiltonian $\widehat{H}_{\rm obs}=|\widehatπ|$ from a perturbative reduction along the observer's worldline in the $G \to 0$ limit. This provides a field-theoretic foundation for the observer model developed in this work.

The Information Budget of the Gravitational Observer

Ram Kirpitch

In the Type II algebras of semiclassical gravity, an observer's clock with energy bounded in a band regularizes the observables of a static patch, and entropies of the resulting algebras reproduce generalized entropy. What has not been computed in that program is the mutual information budget of the observer: how many bits of clock-field correlation the observer's time-bandwidth resources permit. We prove the regularized answer: for any solution of the constraint (H_fields + H_clock)|Ψ⟩ = 0 with clock spectrum confined to bandwidth W and ticks resolved over duration T, the clock-field mutual information obeys I ≤ 2 log₂(1 + ⌊WT/2π⌋) with equality if and only if the clock is the perfect lattice clock the state that, in the de Sitter algebra of Chandrasekaran-Longo-Penington-Witten, is the maximum-entropy state describing the empty static patch. Rigidity holds: any clock with d orthogonal equally spaced ticks carries at least 2 log₂ d bits, so perfect resolution and budget saturation are the same property. Four components of the statement are measured on IBM quantum hardware: an observer ladder (the same global state read by observers of increasing resolution yields 0 → 1.7 → 3.4 → 5.2 bits, and exactly 0 for a misaligned observer); a continuous observer-frame sweep following I = 1 - h((1 + V cos θ)/2) with R² = 0.998 the ledger invariance full restoration of the correlation under the co-rotation U_A ⊗ U_B at every angle, flat to within shot noise; and the rigidity relation itself tick overlap ε and information I measured by independent circuits at seven detunings, with the forbidden region I < 2 - 2 log₂(1 + ε) empty at every point. The lift of the regularized theorem to the Type II crossed product, where empty de Sitter is conjectured to realize the perfect clock exactly, is stated as a sharp open conjecture. Statements are labelled [P] proved, [N] measured, [C] conjecture.

Towards a microscopic description of de Sitter dynamics

Vladimir Narovlansky

Describing dynamics in a gravitational universe with positive cosmological constant, such as de Sitter space, is a conceptually challenging problem. We propose a principle for constructing a quantum system that can potentially be used to study this question. This quantum system describes a heavy object in such a universe interacting with its environment, to which gauge invariant dynamical observables can be anchored. In order to describe gravity with positive cosmological constant, the proposed quantum system needs to agree with all known semiclassical results. We investigate this with a particular microscopic realization constructed using SYK. We first find that correlators match the classical limit of gravity, given by quantum fields in rigid de Sitter space. In particular, the usual UV behavior of quantum fields is surprisingly reproduced by the quantum mechanical system. In order to probe small effects in the gravitational constant, we also consider the intrinsically dynamical out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs). These correspond to gravitational scattering in the bulk away from the worldline associated with the quantum system. Such OTOCs have highly non-trivial features in de Sitter space, including a Lyapunov exponent which is twice as big as the maximal chaos exponent from the bound on chaos, as well as an unusual behavior of the coefficients in various OTOCs. Interestingly, we find that these features are reproduced by the quantum system.

Von Neumann Algebras in Double-Scaled SYK

Jiuci Xu

It has been argued that a finite effective temperature emerges and characterizes the thermal property of double-scaled SYK model in the infinite temperature limit. Meanwhile, in the static patch of de Sitter, the maximally entangled state satisfies a KMS condition at infinite temperature, suggesting the Type II$_1$ nature of the observable algebra gravitationally dressed to the observer. In this work, we analyze the double-scaled algebra generated by chord operators in the double-scaled SYK model and demonstrate that it exhibits features reflecting both perspectives. Specifically, we prove that the algebra is a Type II$_1$ factor, and that the empty state with no chord satisfies the tracial property, in agreement with expectations from earlier work. We further show that this state is cyclic and separating for the double-scaled algebra, based on which we explore its modular structure. We then explore various physical limits of the theory, drawing connections to JT gravity, the Hilbert space of baby universes, and Brownian double-scaled SYK. We also present analytic solutions to the energy spectrum in both the zero- and one-particle sectors of the left/right chord Hamiltonian.

Generalized entropy of gravitational fluctuations

Sean Colin-Ellerin, Guanda Lin, Geoff Penington

A bstract The corrections to holographic entanglement entropy from bulk quantum fields in a classical gravitational background are now well understood. They lead, in particular, to unitary Page curves for evaporating black holes. However, the correct treatment of quantum fluctuations of the metric, including graviton excitations, is a longstanding problem. We provide a gauge-invariant prescription for the generalized entropy of gravitons in anti-de Sitter space in terms of areas and bulk entanglement entropy, generalizing the quantum extremal surface prescription to accommodate fluctuations in the semiclassical spacetime geometry. This task requires a careful treatment of the area operator on the graviton Hilbert space and the definition of a “quantum extremal gauge” in which the extremal surface is unperturbed. It also requires us to determine the correct vacuum modular Hamiltonian for the graviton field, which we fix by requiring that it doesn’t contain a boundary term in extremal gauge. We check our prescription with an explicit computation of the vacuum-subtracted generalized entropy of states containing a graviton in an AdS-Rindler background. Our results exactly match vacuum-subtracted von Neumann entropies for stress-tensor excited states in holographic conformal field theory with d > 2 dimensions. We also use covariant phase space techniques to give a partial proof of our prescription when the entanglement wedge for the background spacetime has a bifurcate Killing horizon. Along the way, we identify a class of perturbative graviton states that have parametrically larger generalized entropy, in the small G N expansion, than any low-energy excitations of an ordinary quantum field.

Information loss, mixing and emergent type III1 factors

Keiichiro Furuya, Nima Lashkari, Mudassir Moosa +1 more

Abstract A manifestation of the black hole information loss problem is that the two-point function of probe operators in a large Anti-de Sitter black hole decays in time, whereas, on the boundary CFT, it is expected to be an almost periodic function of time. We point out that the decay of the two-point function (clustering in time) holds important clues to the nature of observable algebras, states, and dynamics in quantum gravity. We call operators that cluster in time “mixing” and explore the necessary and sufficient conditions for mixing. The information loss problem is a special case of the statement that in type I algebras, there exists no mixing operators. We prove that, in a thermofield double state (KMS state), if mixing operators form an algebra (close under multiplication), the resulting algebra must be a von Neumann type III1 factor. In other words, the physically intuitive requirement that all nonconserved operators should exponentially mix is so strong that it fixes the observable algebra to be an exotic algebra called a type III1 factor. More generally, for an arbitrary out-of-equilibrium state of a general quantum system (von Neumann algebra), we show that if the set of operators that mix under modular flow forms an algebra, it is a type III1 von Neumann factor. In a theory of Generalized Free Fields (GFF), we show that if the two-point function clusters in time, all operators are mixing, and the algebra is a type III1 factor. For example, in 𝒩 = 4 SYM, above the Hawking-Page phase transition, clustering of the single trace operators implies that the algebra is a type III1 factor, settling a recent conjecture of Leutheusser and Liu. We explicitly construct the C∗-algebra and von Neumann subalgebras of GFF associated with time bands and, more generally, open sets of the bulk spacetime using the HKLL reconstruction map.

In de Sitter static patch holography, coupling bulk quantum fields to an observer's dynamical clock yields a type II1_11 von Neumann algebra M+\mathcal{M}_+M+ of gauge-invariant observables. However, the unique tracial state on this algebra fails to reproduce semiclassical bulk correlation functions. We resolve this issue by introducing a family of heavy-clock states, representing an observer reference frame with heavy inertia. We prove that in the heavy-clock limit, nnn-point correlation functions of gauge-invariant dressed observables reproduce the bulk quantum field correlation functions on de Sitter spacetime. Furthermore, we investigate a generalized observer Hamiltonian H^obs=∣π^∣\widehat{H}_{\rm obs}=|\widehatπ|Hobs=∣π∣ that incorporates both forward-running (π≥0π\geq 0π≥0) and backward-running (π<0π<0π<0) clocks. The resulting von Neumann algebra M\mathcal{M}M of gauge-invariant observables remains a typeII1_11 factor and is isomorphic to M+⊗M2(C)\mathcal{M}_+\otimes M_2(\mathbb{C})M+⊗M2(C), where M2(C)M_2(\mathbb{C})M2(C) is the algebra of 2×22\times22×2 complex matrices transforming between the two clock orientations. Time-reversal symmetry is implemented in this setting as an anti-unitary operator that exchanges the two clock orientations, yielding a typeII1_11 von Neumann algebra F\mathcal{F}F of gauge-invariant, time-reversal-invariant observables. We generalize the heavy-clock state construction to both M\mathcal{M}M and F\mathcal{F}F, showing that nnn-point correlation functions calculated in heavy-clock states match the corresponding semiclassical bulk correlation functions. Finally, by coupling Einstein gravity to the Brown--Kuchař dust field, we derive the observer Hamiltonian H^obs=∣π^∣\widehat{H}_{\rm obs}=|\widehatπ|Hobs=∣π∣ from a perturbative reduction along the observer's worldline in the G→0G \to 0G→0 limit. This provides a field-theoretic foundation for the observer model developed in this work.
