Abstract

We construct large families of mixed-state topological orders in (3+1)D, including intrinsically mixed-state topological orders. We realize these theories by relating the data parameterizing braided fusion 2-categories to the strong higher-form symmetries and their anomalies that characterize mixed-state topological order. We focus here on bosonic theories, which include theories which admit an emergent fermion in the spectrum of line operators. Our general framework is exemplified on the lattice, where we present concrete models and identify how the data of braided fusion 2-categories are physically encoded. We then formalize this data and show that every braided fusion 2-category arises from a general construction (decoherence followed by strong and weak gauging) as the category of topological operators of a (3+1)D mixed state, with intrinsically mixed-state topological orders distinguished by the presence of strong higher-form symmetries whose anomalies cannot be realized in any (3+1)D gapped ground state. Notably, we show that (3+1)D admits a new mechanism with no (2+1)D counterpart: intrinsically mixed-state order whose topological operators braid non-degenerately, but which carries a gravitational anomaly.

Toward a Classification of Mixed-State Topological Orders in Two Dimensions

Tyler D. Ellison, Meng Cheng

The classification and characterization of topological phases of matter is well understood for ground states of gapped Hamiltonians that are well isolated from the environment. However, decoherence due to interactions with the environment is inevitable—thus motivating the investigation of topological orders in the context of mixed states. Here, we take a step toward classifying mixed-state topological orders in two spatial dimensions by considering their (emergent) generalized symmetries. We argue that their 1-form symmetries and the associated anyon theories lead to a partial classification under two-way connectivity by quasilocal quantum channels. This allows us to establish mixed-state topological orders that are intrinsically mixed, i.e., that have no ground-state counterpart. We provide a wide range of examples based on topological subsystem codes, decohering G -graded string-net models, and “classically gauging” symmetry-enriched topological orders. One of our main examples is an Ising string-net model under the influence of dephasing noise. We study the resulting space of locally indistinguishable states and compute the modular transformations within a particular coherent space. Based on our examples, we identify two possible effects of quasilocal quantum channels on anyon theories: (1) anyons can be incoherently proliferated—thus reducing to a commutant of the proliferated anyons, or (2) the system can be “classically gauged,” resulting in the symmetrization of anyons and an extension by transparent bosons. Given these two mechanisms, we conjecture that mixed-state topological orders are classified by premodular anyon theories, i.e., those for which the braiding relations may be degenerate.

(2+1)d lattice models and tensor networks for gapped phases with categorical symmetry

Kansei Inamura, Sheng-Jie Huang, Apoorv Tiwari +1 more

Gapped phases in 2+1 dimensional quantum field theories with fusion 2-categorical symmetries were recently classified and characterized using the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) approach [L. Bhardwaj et al., SciPost Phys. 19, 056 (2025); L. Bhardwaj et al., arXiv: 2502.20440]. In this paper, we provide a systematic lattice model construction for all such gapped phases. Specifically, we consider “all-boson type” fusion 2-category symmetries, all of which are obtainable from 0-form symmetry groups G G (possibly with an ’t Hooft anomaly) via generalized gauging—that is, by stacking with an H H -symmetric TFT and gauging a subgroup H H . The continuum classification directly informs the lattice data, such as the generalized gauging that determines the symmetry category, and the data that specifies the gapped phase. We construct commuting projector Hamiltonians and ground states applicable to any non-chiral gapped phase with such symmetries. We also describe the ground states in terms of tensor networks. In light of the length of the paper, we include a self-contained summary section presenting the main results and examples.

Intrinsic NISPT Phases, igNISPT Phases, and Mixed Anomalies of Non-Invertible Symmetries

Da-Chuan Lu, Zhengdi Sun

A bosonic non-invertible Symmetry Protected Topological (NISPT) phase in (1+1)-dim is referred to as $\textit{intrinsic}$ if it cannot be mapped, under discrete gauging, to a gapped phase with any invertible symmetry, that is, if it is protected by a non-group-theoretical fusion category symmetry. We construct the intrinsic NISPT phases by performing discrete gauging in a partial SSB phase with a fusion category symmetry that has a certain mixed anomaly. Sometimes, the anomaly of that symmetry category can be alternatively understood as a self-anomaly of a proper categorical sub-symmetry; when this is the case, the same gauging provides an anomaly resolution of this anomalous categorical sub-symmetry. This allows us to construct intrinsic gapless SPT (igSPT) phases, where the anomalous faithfully acting symmetry is non-invertible; and we refer to such igSPT phases as igNISPT phases. We provide two concrete lattice models realizing an intrinsic NISPT phase and an igNISPT phase, respectively. We also generalize the construction of intrinsic NISPT phases to (3+1)-dim.

Gravitational anomaly of (3+1) -dimensional Z2 toric code with fermionic charges and fermionic loop self-statistics

Lukasz Fidkowski, Jeongwan Haah, Matthew B. Hastings

Quasiparticle excitations in $3+1$ dimensions can be either bosons or fermions. In this work, we introduce the notion of fermionic loop excitations in $(3+1)$-dimensional $(3+1\text{d})$ topological phases. Specifically, we construct a new many-body lattice invariant of gapped Hamiltonians, the loop self-statistics $\ensuremath{\mu}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, that distinguishes two bosonic topological orders that both superficially resemble $3+1\mathrm{d}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory coupled to fermionic charged matter. The first has fermionic charges and bosonic ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge flux loops (FcBl) and is just the ordinary fermionic toric code. The second has fermionic charges and fermionic loops (FcFl) and, as we argue, can only exist at the boundary of a nontrivial $(4+1)$-dimensional $(4+1\mathrm{d})$ invertible phase, stable without any symmetries, i.e., it possesses a gravitational anomaly. We substantiate these claims by constructing an explicit exactly solvable $4+1\mathrm{d}$ model using a method that bootstraps a boundary theory into a bulk Hamiltonian, analogous to that of Walker and Wang, and computing the loop self-statistics in the fermionic ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory hosted at its boundary. We also show that the FcFl phase has the same gravitational anomaly as all-fermion quantum electrodynamics. Our results are in agreement with the recent classification of nondegenerate braided fusion 2-categories by Johnson-Freyd, and with the cobordism prediction of a nontrivial ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-classified $4+1\mathrm{d}$ invertible phase with action $S=\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\int}{w}_{2}{w}_{3}$.

Continuum field theory of three-dimensional topological orders with emergent fermions and braiding statistics

Zhifeng Zhang, Qing-Rui Wang, Peng Ye

Universal topological data of topologically ordered phases can be captured by topological quantum field theory in continuous space time by taking the limit of low energies and long wavelengths. While previous continuum field-theoretical studies of topological orders in three-dimensional (3D) real space focused on either self-statistics, braiding statistics, shrinking rules, fusion rules, or quantum dimensions, it has yet to systematically put all topological data together in a unified continuum field-theoretical framework. Here, we construct the topological $BF$ field theory with twisted terms (e.g., $AAdA$ and $AAB$) as well as a $K$-matrix $BB$ term to simultaneously explore all such topological data and reach anomaly-free topological orders. Following the spirit of the famous $K$-matrix Chern-Simons theory of two-dimensional topological orders, we present general formulas and systematically show how the $K$-matrix $BB$ term confines topological excitations, and how self-statistics of particles is transmuted between bosonic one and fermionic one. To reach anomaly-free topological orders, we explore, within the present continuum field-theoretical framework, how the principle of gauge invariance fundamentally influences possible realizations of topological data. More concretely, we present the topological actions of (i) particle-loop braidings with emergent fermions, (ii) multiloop braidings with emergent fermions, and (iii) Borromean rings braidings with emergent fermions, and calculate their universal topological data. Together with previous efforts, our paper paves the way toward a more systematic and complete continuum field-theoretical analysis of exotic topological properties of 3D topological orders. Several interesting future directions are also discussed.

Noisy Approach to Intrinsically Mixed-State Topological Order

Ramanjit Sohal, Abhinav Prem

We propose a general framework for studying two-dimensional (2D) topologically ordered states subject to local correlated errors and show that the resulting mixed state can display (imTO)—topological order that is not expected to occur in the ground state of 2D local gapped Hamiltonians. Specifically, we show that decoherence, previously interpreted as anyon condensation in a doubled Hilbert space, is more naturally phrased as, and provides a physical mechanism for, “gauging out” anyons in the original Hilbert space. We find that gauging out anyons generically results in imTO, with the decohered mixed state strongly symmetric under certain anomalous 1-form symmetries. This framework lays bare a striking connection between the decohered density matrix and , which can appear as anomalous surface states of three-dimensional topological orders. Through a series of examples, we show that the decohered state can display a classical memory, encode logical qubits (i.e., exhibit a quantum memory), and even host chiral or nonmodular topological order. We argue that a partial classification of imTO is given in terms of nonmodular braided-fusion categories.
