Abstract

Quasiparticle excitations in $3+1$ dimensions can be either bosons or fermions. In this work, we introduce the notion of fermionic loop excitations in $(3+1)$-dimensional $(3+1\text{d})$ topological phases. Specifically, we construct a new many-body lattice invariant of gapped Hamiltonians, the loop self-statistics $\ensuremath{\mu}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, that distinguishes two bosonic topological orders that both superficially resemble $3+1\mathrm{d}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory coupled to fermionic charged matter. The first has fermionic charges and bosonic ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge flux loops (FcBl) and is just the ordinary fermionic toric code. The second has fermionic charges and fermionic loops (FcFl) and, as we argue, can only exist at the boundary of a nontrivial $(4+1)$-dimensional $(4+1\mathrm{d})$ invertible phase, stable without any symmetries, i.e., it possesses a gravitational anomaly. We substantiate these claims by constructing an explicit exactly solvable $4+1\mathrm{d}$ model using a method that bootstraps a boundary theory into a bulk Hamiltonian, analogous to that of Walker and Wang, and computing the loop self-statistics in the fermionic ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory hosted at its boundary. We also show that the FcFl phase has the same gravitational anomaly as all-fermion quantum electrodynamics. Our results are in agreement with the recent classification of nondegenerate braided fusion 2-categories by Johnson-Freyd, and with the cobordism prediction of a nontrivial ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-classified $4+1\mathrm{d}$ invertible phase with action $S=\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\int}{w}_{2}{w}_{3}$.

Loops in 4+1d topological phases

Xie Chen

2+1d topological phases are well characterized by the fusion rules and braiding/exchange statistics of fractional point excitations. In 4+1d, some topological phases contain only fractional loop excitations. What kind of loop statistics exist? We study the 4+1d gauge theory with 2-form $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field (the loop-only toric code) and find that while braiding statistics between two different types of loops can be nontrivial, the self "exchange" statistics are all trivial. In particular, we show that the electric, magnetic, and dyonic loop excitations in the 4+1d toric code are not distinguished by their self-statistics. They tunnel into each other across 3+1d invertible domain walls which in turn give explicit unitary circuits that map the loop excitations into each other. The SL(2,$\mathbb{Z}_2$) symmetry that permutes the loops, however, cannot be consistently gauged and we discuss the associated obstruction in the process. Moreover, we discuss a gapless boundary condition dubbed the "fractional Maxwell theory" and show how it can be Higgsed into gapped boundary conditions. We also discuss the generalization of these results from the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group to $\mathbb{Z}_N$.

Exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonians and gravitational anomalies

Yu-An Chen, Po-Shen Hsin

We construct infinitely many new exactly solvable local commuting projector lattice Hamiltonian models for general bosonic beyond group cohomology invertible topological phases of order two and four in any spacetime dimensions, whose boundaries are characterized by gravitational anomalies. Examples include the beyond group cohomology invertible phase without symmetry in (4+1)D that has an anomalous boundary \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 topological order with fermionic particle and fermionic loop excitations that have mutual \pi π statistics. We argue that this construction gives a new non-trivial quantum cellular automaton (QCA) in (4+1)D of order two. We also present an explicit construction of gapped symmetric boundary state for the bosonic beyond group cohomology invertible phase with unitary \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 symmetry in (4+1)D. We discuss new quantum phase transitions protected by different invertible phases across the transitions.

Composite particle theory of three-dimensional gapped fermionic phases: Fractional topological insulators and charge-loop excitation symmetry

Peng Ye, Taylor L. Hughes, Joseph Maciejko +1 more

Topological phases of matter are usually realized in deconfined phases of gauge theories. In this context, confined phases with strongly fluctuating gauge fields seem to be irrelevant to the physics of topological phases. For example, the low-energy theory of the two-dimensional (2D) toric code model (i.e., the deconfined phase of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory) is a $\text{U}(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{U}(1)$ Chern-Simons theory in which gauge charges (i.e., $e$ and $m$ particles) are deconfined and the gauge fields are gapped, while the confined phase is topologically trivial. In this paper, we point out a route to constructing exotic three-dimensional (3D) gapped fermionic phases in a confining phase of a gauge theory. Starting from a parton construction with strongly fluctuating compact $\text{U}(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{U}(1)$ gauge fields, we construct gapped phases of interacting fermions by condensing two linearly independent bosonic composite particles consisting of partons and $\text{U}(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{U}(1)$ magnetic monopoles. This can be regarded as a 3D generalization of the 2D Bais-Slingerland condensation mechanism. Charge fractionalization results from a Debye-H\"uckel--type screening cloud formed by the condensed composite particles. Within our general framework, we explore two aspects of symmetry-enriched 3D Abelian topological phases. First, we construct a new fermionic state of matter with time-reversal symmetry and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}\ensuremath{\ne}\ensuremath{\pi}$, the fractional topological insulator. Second, we generalize the notion of anyonic symmetry of 2D Abelian topological phases to the charge-loop excitation symmetry ($\mathsf{Charles}$) of 3D Abelian topological phases. We show that line twist defects, which realize $\mathsf{Charles}$ transformations, exhibit non-Abelian fusion properties.

Pauli stabilizer formalism for topological quantum field theories and generalized statistics

Yitao Feng, Hanyu Xue, Ryohei Kobayashi +2 more

Topological quantum field theory (TQFT) provides a unifying framework for describing topological phases of matter and for constructing quantum error-correcting codes, playing a central role across high-energy physics, condensed matter, and quantum information. A central challenge is to formulate topological order on lattices and to extract the properties of topological excitations from microscopic Hamiltonians. In this work, we construct new classes of lattice gauge theories as Pauli stabilizer models, realizing a wide range of TQFTs in general dimensions. We develop a lattice description of extended excitations and systematically determine their generalized statistics. Our main example is the (4+1)D fermionic-loop toric code, obtained by condensing the $e^2m^2$-loop in the (4+1)D $\mathbb Z_4$ toric code. We show that the loop excitation exhibits fermionic loop statistics: the 24-step loop-flipping process yields a phase of $-1$. Our Pauli stabilizer models realize all twisted 2-form gauge theories in (4+1)D, the higher-form Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT classified by $H^5(B^2G,U(1))$. Beyond (4+1)D, the fermionic-loop toric codes form a family of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders in arbitrary dimensions, realized as explicit Pauli stabilizer codes using $\mathbb Z_4$ qudits. Finally, we develop a Pauli-based framework that defines generalized statistics for extended excitations in any dimension, yielding computable lattice unitary processes to detect nontrivial statistics. For example, we propose anyonic membrane statistics in (6+1)D, as well as fermionic membrane and volume statistics in arbitrary dimensions. We construct new families of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders: the fermionic-membrane toric code and the fermionic-volume toric code. In addition, we demonstrate that $p$-dimensional excitations in $2p+2$ spatial dimensions can support anyonic $p$-brane statistics for only even $p$.

Time-reversal and spatial-reflection symmetry localization anomalies in (2+1)-dimensional topological phases of matter

Maissam Barkeshli, Meng Cheng

We study a class of anomalies associated with time-reversal and spatial-reflection symmetry in (2+1)-dimensional bosonic topological phases of matter. In these systems, the topological quantum numbers of the quasiparticles, such as the fusion rules and braiding statistics, possess a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry which can be associated with either time reversal (denoted ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{\mathbf{T}})$ or spatial reflections. Under this symmetry, correlation functions of all Wilson loop operators in the low-energy topological quantum field theory (TQFT) are invariant. However, the theories that we study possess a severe anomaly associated with the failure to consistently localize the symmetry action to the quasiparticles, precluding even defining a consistent notion of symmetry fractionalization in such systems. We present simple sufficient conditions which determine when ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{\mathbf{T}}$ symmetry localization anomalies exist in general. We present an infinite series of TQFTs with such anomalies, some examples of which include $\mathrm{USp}{(4)}_{2}$ Chern-Simons (CS) theory and $\mathrm{SO}{(4)}_{4}$ CS theory. The theories that we find with these ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{\mathbf{T}}$ anomalies can all be obtained by gauging the unitary ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ subgroup of a different TQFT with a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{4}^{\mathbf{T}}$ symmetry. We further show that the anomaly can be resolved in several distinct ways: (1) the true symmetry of the theory is ${\mathbb{Z}}_{4}^{\mathbf{T}}$, or (2) the theory can be considered to be a theory of fermions, with ${\mathbf{T}}^{2}={(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{{N}_{f}}$ corresponding to fermion parity. Finally, we demonstrate that theories with the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{\mathbf{T}}$ localization anomaly can be compatible with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{\mathbf{T}}$ if they are ``pseudorealized'' at the surface of a (3+1)D symmetry-enriched topological phase. The ``pseudorealization'' refers to the fact that the bulk (3+1)D system is described by a dynamical ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory and thus only a subset of the quasiparticles are truly confined to the surface.
