Abstract

We study discrete-time quantum trajectories of a finite-dimensional system in a disordered environment, where the instrument applied at each step is determined by an invertible measure-preserving dynamical system. For general quantum instruments on a standard Borel outcome space, we construct the quenched probability law on sequences of measurement outcomes for a fixed realization of the disorder and a given initial state. Under a quenched Doeblin condition with a uniform deterministic minorization constant and an environment-dependent minorizing probability measure, we establish the existence and uniqueness of an equivariant family of random posterior laws and identify its barycenter as the unique dynamically stationary state for the associated non-selective channel cocycle. If the environment is ergodic, we prove a pathwise ergodic theorem valid for every measurable choice of initial state: for almost every realization of the disorder, time averages of posterior states converge almost surely under the corresponding quenched law to the disorder average of the unique dynamically stationary state. For an ergodic environment, we establish quenched variance asymptotics and, when the asymptotic variance is positive, a central limit theorem and standardized Berry--Esseen bounds for additive functionals generated by bounded measurable real-valued functions of the environment and posterior state. These results hold for every measurable initial state and almost every disorder realization. We then show that the stationary annealed joint process of instruments and posterior states inherits the $α$-mixing of the instrument process, up to an exponentially decaying term. Finally, we provide classes of examples involving perfect and imperfect measurements, including models with continuous or finite outcome spaces, that satisfy the standing Doeblin condition.

Central Limit Theorems for Outcome Records in Disordered Quantum Trajectories

Lubashan Pathirana

We prove annealed functional central limit theorems for finite pattern counts in the measurement record of discrete-time quantum trajectories, with the instrument applied at each step determined by an invertible, probability-preserving base dynamical system. When the base is ergodic, under summable strong-mixing coefficients of the instrument process and a summable uniform annealed trace-norm forgetting rate for the associated non-selective channel cocycle, we establish a joint functional CLT for bounded vector-valued functions of finite outcome blocks under the annealed law determined by the dynamically stationary state. We then extend this limit to every measurable random initial state, yielding a universal functional CLT with unchanged stationary centering and asymptotic covariance. We also provide practical sufficient criteria ensuring the existence and uniqueness of the dynamically stationary state and the required annealed trace-norm forgetting. We illustrate the results through a broad family of examples, including disordered walk-type models generated by finite group actions, measurement followed by preparation, and instruments with reset components. The results apply to general disordered quantum instruments and are not restricted to the perfect-measurement regime; they complement the law of large numbers established by Ekblad, Moreno-Nadales, and Pathirana (2026) for the same disordered setting and provide a disordered counterpart of the homogeneous CLT of Attal, Guillotin-Plantard, and Sabot (2014).

Ergodic theorems for quantum trajectories under disordered generalized measurements

Owen Ekblad, Eloy Moreno-Nadales, Lubashan Pathirana

Abstract We consider quantum trajectories arising from disordered, repeated generalized measurements, which have the structure of Markov chains in random environments (MCREs) with dynamically-defined transition probabilities; we call these disordered quantum trajectories . Under the assumption that the underlying disordered open quantum dynamical system approaches a unique equilibrium in time averages, we establish a strong law of large numbers for measurement outcomes arising from disordered quantum trajectories, which follows after we establish general annealed ergodic theorems for the corresponding MCRE. The type of disorder our model allows includes the random settings where the disorder is i.i.d. or Markovian, the periodic (resp. quasiperiodic) settings where the disorder has periodic (resp. quasiperiodic) structure, and the nonrandom setting where the disorder is constant through time. In particular, our work extends the earlier noise-free results of Kümmerer and Maassen to the present disordered framework.

Asymptotic stability and ergodic properties of quantum trajectories under imperfect measurement

Nina H. Amini, Tristan Benoist, Maël Bompais +1 more

We investigate the asymptotic stability and ergodic properties of quantum trajectories under imperfect measurement, extending previous results established for the ideal case of perfect measurement. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition ensuring the convergence of the estimated trajectory, initialized from an estimated state, to the true trajectory. This result is obtained assuming that the associated quantum channel is irreducible. Building on this, we prove the uniqueness of the invariant measure and demonstrate convergence toward this measure.

An ergodic theorem for homogeneously distributed quantum channels with applications to matrix product states

Ramis Movassagh, Jeffrey Schenker

Any quantum process is represented by a sequence of quantum channels. We consider ergodic processes, obtained by sampling channel valued random variables along the trajectories of an ergodic dynamical system. Examples of such processes include the effect of repeated application of a fixed quantum channel perturbed by arbitrary correlated noise, or a sequence of channels drawn independently and identically from an ensemble. Under natural irreducibility conditions, we obtain a theorem showing that the state of a system evolving by such a process converges exponentially fast to an ergodic sequence of states depending on the process, but independent of the initial state of the system. As an application, we describe the thermodynamic limit of ergodic matrix product states and prove that the 2-point correlations of local observables in such states decay exponentially with their distance in the bulk. Further applications and physical implications of our results are discussed in the companion paper [11].

Disordered Ground States of Ergodic Quantum Spin Systems

Eric B. Roon, Jeffrey H. Schenker

In this letter, we fill a hole in the existing literature about disordered quantum spin systems generated by a random local interaction $\{\mathfrak{h}(Z)\}_{Z\Subset \mathbb{Z}^ν}$ satisfying a statistical version of translation invariance. We show such systems always have disordered ground states in the thermodynamic limit with the same symmetry. A key tool we use is a disordered version of the Lieb-Robinson bounds, which hold almost surely under mild conditions on $\mathfrak{h}$. Along the way, we formalize the notion of a random state on a $C^*$-algebra and prove a weak-$\ast$ version of the Riesz-Markov-Kakutani theorem, which seems not to have been recorded in the vector measures literature. As a consequence of the existence of the aforementioned disordered ground states, we show that the spectrum of the GNS Hamiltonain associated to the bulk dynamics is deterministic with respect to the disorder.

Central Limit Theorems for Open Quantum Random Walks and Quantum Measurement Records

Stéphane Attal, Nadine Guillotin‐Plantard, Christophe Sabot

Open Quantum Random Walks, as developed in \cite{APSS}, are a quantum generalization of Markov chains on finite graphs or on lattices. These random walks are typically quantum in their behavior, step by step, but they seem to show up a rather classical asymptotic behavior, as opposed to the quantum random walks usually considered in Quantum Information Theory (such as the well-known Hadamard random walk). Typically, in the case of Open Quantum Random Walks on lattices, their distribution seems to always converge to a Gaussian distribution or a mixture of Gaussian distributions. In the case of nearest neighbors homogeneous Open Quantum Random Walks on $\ZZ^d$ we prove such a Central Limit Theorem, in the case where only one Gaussian distribution appears in the limit. Through the quantum trajectory point of view on quantum master equations, we transform the problem into studying a certain functional of a Markov chain on $\ZZ^d$ times the Banach space of quantum states. The main difficulty is that we know nothing about the invariant measures of this Markov chain, even their existence. Surprisingly enough, we are able to produce a Central Limit Theorem with explicit drift and explicit covariance matrix. The interesting point which appears with our construction and result is that it applies actually to a wider setup: it provides a Central Limit Theorem for the sequence of recordings of the quantum trajectories associated to any completely positive map. This is what we show and develop as an application of our result. In a second step we are able to extend our Central Limit Theorem to the case of several asymptotic Gaussians, in the case where the operator coefficients of the quantum walk are block-diagonal in a common basis.
