Abstract

We study measurement-only dynamics in an interacting spin-1 chain, using forced, normalized local projections rather than Born-rule-sampled measurement outcomes. Starting from the nearest-neighbor (NN) Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) Haldane symmetry-protected topological state, we show that competing local projectors drive this order toward three distinct dynamical phases: a featureless topologically trivial product state, an explicitly dimerized valence-bond-solid state, and a topologically trivial next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) AKLT state consisting of two interwoven Haldane chains. Using matrix product state and exact statevector simulations, we identify continuous transitions among these phases and characterize them using nonlocal string order parameters, local dimer order, and entanglement scaling. For the NN-NNN AKLT model, finite-size signatures are consistent with an intervening extended critical regime rather than a single direct transition. These results extend studies of monitored topology to a bosonic SPT and show that local projections can control both topological and valence-bond-solid order.

Continuous Néel-VBS quantum phase transition in non-local one-dimensional systems with SO(3) symmetry

Chao‐Ming Jian, Yichen Xu, Xiao-Chuan Wu +1 more

One dimensional (1d) interacting systems with local Hamiltonians can be studied with various well-developed analytical methods. Recently novel 1d physics was found numerically in systems with either spatially nonlocal interactions, or at the 1d boundary of 2d quantum critical points, and the critical fluctuation in the bulk also yields effective nonlocal interactions at the boundary. This work studies the edge states at the 1d boundary of 2d strongly interacting symmetry protected topological (SPT) states, when the bulk is driven to a disorder-order phase transition. We will take the 2d Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) state as an example, which is a SPT state protected by the SO(3) spin symmetry and spatial translation. We found that the original (1+1)d boundary conformal field theory of the AKLT state is unstable due to coupling to the boundary avatar of the bulk quantum critical fluctuations. When the bulk is fixed at the quantum critical point, within the accuracy of our expansion method, we find that by tuning one parameter at the boundary, there is a generic direct transition between the long range antiferromagnetic Néel order and the valence bond solid (VBS) order. This transition is very similar to the Néel-VBS transition recently found in numerical simulation of a spin-1/2 chain with nonlocal spatial interactions. Connections between our analytical studies and recent numerical results concerning the edge states of the 2d AKLT-like state at a bulk quantum phase transition will also be discussed.

Topological Phase Transition and Z2 Index for S=1 Quantum Spin Chains

Hal Tasaki

We study S=1 quantum spin systems on the infinite chain with short ranged Hamiltonians that have a certain rotational and discrete symmetry. We define a Z_{2} index for any gapped unique ground state, and prove that it is invariant under a smooth deformation. By using the index, we provide the first rigorous proof of the existence of a "topological" phase transition, which cannot be characterized by any conventional order parameters, between the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model and trivial models. This rigorously establishes that the AKLT model is in a nontrivial symmetry protected topological phase.

Topological disentangler for the valence-bond-solid chain

Kouichi Okunishi

We discuss the topological disentangler for $S=1$ quantum spin chains in the Haldane phase. We first point out that the Kennedy-Tasaki (KT) nonlocal unitary transformation is the perfect disentangler for the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model. We then demonstrate that the KT transformation can be reconstructed as an assembly of pair disentanglers. Finally, we show that the KT transformation can be regarded as a topological disentangler, which selectively disentangles the twofold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum of the $S=1$ Heisenberg chain.

Coexistence of valence-bond formation and topological order in the Frustrated Ferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ Chain

Cliò Efthimia Agrapidis, Stefan-Ludwig Drechsler, Jeroen van den Brink +1 more

Frustrated one-dimensional (1D) magnets are known as ideal playgrounds for new exotic quantum phenomena to emerge. We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin- \frac{1}{2} 1 2 ferromagnetic ( J_1 J 1 ) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ( J_2 J 2 ) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at J_2/|J_1|>1/4 J 2 / | J 1 | > 1 / 4 and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking through order by disorder. Quite interestingly, this VBS state has a Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological order. This is the first example of a frustrated spin chain in which quantum fluctuations induce gapped topological order.

Measurement-based quantum computation in a two-dimensional phase of matter

Andrew S Darmawan, Gavin K. Brennen, Stephen D. Bartlett

Recently, it was shown that the non-local correlations needed for measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) can be revealed in the ground state of the Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki (AKLT) model involving nearest-neighbour spin-3/2 interactions on a honeycomb lattice. This state is not singular but resides in the disordered phase of the ground states of a large family of Hamiltonians characterized by short-range-correlated valence bond solid states. By applying local filtering and adaptive single-particle measurements, we show that most states in the disordered phase can be reduced to a graph of correlated qubits that is a scalable resource for MBQC. At the transition between the disordered and Néel ordered phases, we find a transition from universal to non-universal states as witnessed by the scaling of percolation in the reduced graph state.

Z3 symmetry-protected topological phases in the SU(3) AKLT model

Takahiro Morimoto, Hiroshi Ueda, Tsutomu Momoi +1 more

We study ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in one-dimensional spin systems with ${Z}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{3}$ symmetry. We construct ground-state wave functions of the matrix product form for nontrivial ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ phases and their parent Hamiltonian from a cocycle of the group cohomology ${H}^{2}({Z}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{3},U(1))$. The Hamiltonian is an SU(3) version of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model, consisting of bilinear and biquadratic terms of su(3) generators in the adjoint representation. A generalization to the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ case, the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ AKLT Hamiltonian, is also presented, which realizes nontrivial ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ SPT phases. We use the infinite-size variant of the density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method to determine the ground-state phase diagram of the SU(3) bilinear-biquadratic model as a function of the parameter $\ensuremath{\theta}$ controlling the ratio of the bilinear and biquadratic coupling constants. The nontrivial ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ SPT phase is found for a range of the parameter $\ensuremath{\theta}$ including the point of vanishing biquadratic term $(\ensuremath{\theta}=0)$ as well as the SU(3) AKLT point [$\ensuremath{\theta}=arctan(2/9)$]. A continuous phase transition to the SU(3) dimer phase takes place at $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\approx}\ensuremath{-}0.027\ensuremath{\pi}$, with a central charge $c\ensuremath{\approx}3.2$. For SU(3) symmetric cases, we define string order parameters for the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ SPT phases in a similar way to the conventional Haldane phase. We propose simple spin models that effectively realize the SU(3) and SU(4) AKLT models.
