Abstract

Using thermal analyticity, we derive directional large-frequency bounds on the smooth functions entering full eigenstate thermalization in continuum quantum field theory. The strongest directions reproduce the scales previously identified for lattice systems, while the complete analyticity domain reveals an asymmetric multifrequency structure. Thermal conformal correlators saturate the second- and third-order bounds, and the leading gravitational Regge contribution saturates the strongest fourth-order direction.

Full Eigenstate Thermalization in Quantum Field Theory: Free Cumulants and Gravitational Scrambling

Ricardo Espíndola, Viktor Jahnke

Using thermal analyticity, we derive directional large-frequency bounds on the smooth functions entering full eigenstate thermalization in continuum quantum field theory. The strongest directions reproduce the scales previously identified for lattice systems, while the complete analyticity domain reveals a broader asymmetric multifrequency structure. In thermal two-dimensional conformal field theory, exact two- and three-point functions saturate the corresponding bounds. At fourth order, where genuine dynamical information first appears, we show that the holographic CFTs studied here saturate the strongest full-ETH bounds. These results establish a direct connection between full ETH, free cumulants, and gravitational scrambling, and are consistent with the emergence of asymptotic freeness realized by the gravitational scrambling algebra.

Full Eigenstate Thermalization via Free Cumulants in Quantum Lattice Systems

Silvia Pappalardi, Felix Fritzsch, Tomaž Prosen

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) has been established as the general framework to understand quantum statistical mechanics. Only recently has the attention been paid to so-called full ETH, which accounts for higher-order correlations among matrix elements, and that can be rationalized theoretically using the language of free probability. In this work, we perform the first numerical investigation of the full ETH in physical many-body systems with local interactions by testing the decomposition of higher-order correlators into thermal free cumulants for local operators. We perform exact diagonalization on two classes of local nonintegrable (chaotic) quantum many-body systems: spin chain Hamiltonians and Floquet brickwork unitary circuits. We show that the dynamics of four-time correlation functions are encoded in fourth-order free cumulants, as predicted by ETH. Their dependence on frequency encodes the physical properties of local many-body systems and distinguishes them from structureless, rotationally invariant ensembles of random matrices.

Full eigenstate thermalization in integrable spin systems

Tanay Pathak

The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) is a standard tool to understand the thermalization properties of an isolated quantum system. Its generalization to higher order correlations of matrix elements of local operators, dubbed the full ETH, relates the ETH free cumulants to the corresponding thermal free cumulants in the thermodynamic limit. In this work, we numerically test the full ETH predictions using exact diagonalization of two integrable spin models: the Ising and the XXZ Heisenberg models. The differences from the behavior predicted by full ETH in chaotic systems are highlighted and contrasted along the way. We further study the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) through its approximate decomposition into contributions involving the second- and fourth-order ETH free cumulants. We find that, although the fourth-order contribution governs the late-time behavior of the OTOC in these integrable models, its dynamics differs significantly from that found in nonintegrable systems.

Free Cumulants in Full Eigenstate Thermalization from Boundary Scrambling

Felix Fritzsch, Gabriel O. Alves, Michael A. Rampp +1 more

Out-of-time-order correlation functions (OTOCs) and their higher-order generalizations present important probes of quantum information dynamics and scrambling. We introduce a solvable many-body quantum model, which we term , for which the full dynamics of higher-order OTOCs is analytically tractable. Following recent extensions of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, these dynamics are encoded in free cumulants describing higher-order correlations between matrix elements. Using this correspondence, we obtain analytical predictions for time- and frequency-resolved free cumulants and show these to be stable away from the solvable point. The solvability is enabled by the identification of a higher-order Markovian influence matrix, capturing the effect of the full system on a local subsystem. These results provide insight into the emergence of random-matrix behavior from structured Floquet dynamics and show how techniques from free probability can be applied in the construction of exactly solvable many-body models.

Generalized eigenstate thermalization beyond leading order in 2D large c CFTs

Ziyuan Wang, Jiaju Zhang

We develop a Fock-space formulation that reduces expectation values of vacuum-family quasi-primaries in qKdV eigenstates of arbitrary highest-weight conformal families to a free-bosonic problem, and employ it to test the generalized eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (GETH), in 2D conformal field theories with large central charge $c$. We demonstrate that the first two quantum Korteweg--de Vries (qKdV) charges $Q_1$ and $Q_3$ lift all degeneracies except along at most countably many curves in the $(c,Δ)$ plane, where $Δ$ is the highest weight of the conformal family, so that the full-qKdV simultaneous eigenstates are unambiguously determined by $Q_1$ and $Q_3$. Based on this, a near-complete toolkit for testing in the vacuum conformal family or falsifying the general form of GETH, i.e. equating qKdV eigenstates and thermal states of the generalized Gibbs ensemble in the sense of expectations of local observables, is provided in this paper, through the infinite tower of qKdV charges. A stronger form of the GETH, namely that all expectations of local observables of a definite level should be expressible of qKdV charges but not contain microscopic eigenstate information, is directly falsified at subleading order in the large-$c$ expansion. At levels 6 and 8 in the vacuum family, expectation values of quasi-primaries in simultaneous eigenstates of the qKdV charges are not fixed by first finitely many qKdV charges, and microscopic information of the eigenstate is required.

Thermality of eigenstates in conformal field theories

Pallab Basu, Diptarka Das, Shouvik Datta +1 more

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) provides a way to understand how an isolated quantum mechanical system can be approximated by a thermal density matrix. We find a class of operators in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, consisting of quasiprimaries of the identity module, which satisfy the hypothesis only at the leading order in large central charge. In the context of subsystem ETH, this plays a role in the deviation of the reduced density matrices, corresponding to a finite energy density eigenstate from its hypothesized thermal approximation. The universal deviation in terms of the square of the trace-square distance goes as the eighth power of the subsystem fraction and is suppressed by powers of inverse central charge (c). Furthermore, the nonuniversal deviations from subsystem ETH are found to be proportional to the heavy-light-heavy structure constants which are typically exponentially suppressed in sqrt[h/c], where h is the conformal scaling dimension of the finite energy density state. We also examine the effects of the leading finite-size corrections.
