Abstract

We develop a manifestly gauge and Lorentz invariant perturbative calculus to study the finite time and distance evolution of the electrically charged states created by Wilson-line-dressed scalar field operators in scalar quantum electrodynamics. By an Osterwalder-Schrader reflection and Euclidean gluing, the overlap of two dressed states is expressed as a Euclidean 2 point function of dressed operators, which is then evaluated in renormalized perturbation theory with a Stueckelberg photon mass as a gauge, BRST and Lorentz invariant infrared cutoff. This renders explicit and computable in closed form several structural features of the charged sector that have so far been accessible mainly through non-perturbative or algebraic arguments. We find that states dressed by non-parallel Wilson lines are ``cloud orthogonal". Their overlap vanishes as a power of the infrared regulator, with an exponent that depends only on the angle between the two dressings and is an infrared analogue of the cusp anomalous dimension with the difference that it is one-loop exact whenever the charged matter is mass-gapped. Charged states are thereby superselected by the orientation of their dressing. Within a superselection sector the 2 point function is infrared finite but exhibits the infraparticle. The mass shell pole is replaced by the edge of a branch cut. As a result, the asymptotic spread of a dressed charge is a power law in proper time with a one-loop-exact computable exponent depending on the dressing and on the direction of motion. We show that although cloud orthogonality and the infraparticle are each extremely sensitive to fundamental infrared cutoffs, the infraparticle scaling law persists across a wide window of proper time.

The Infraparticle Edge

Soo-Jong Rey

I derive the charged-particle spectral edge from the quantum instrument of soft QED. I use two projections of that instrument. Tracing over unresolved photons gives the reduced hard-sector channel. Pushing the outcomes to total energy gives the inclusive energy distribution. Its Laplace exponent is fixed by the diagonal soft intensity. For ${\rm d} N_h(ω)=η_h{\rm d}ω/ω+{\rm d} N_{h,\mathrm{reg}}(ω)$, I obtain $ρ_{\mathrm{inc}}(s)\sim Cθ(s-m^2)(s-m^2)^{-1+η_h}$. I retain the coherence kernel and derive hard-sector dephasing and the spectral edge from two contractions of one soft environment. The diagonal coefficient $κ_{aa}$ fixes the endpoint exponent, while $\frac12(κ_{aa}+κ_{bb}-2\operatorname{Re}κ_{ba})$ fixes the dephasing exponent between hard alternatives. I then classify infrared energy marginals, derive the finite-resolution residue $Z(μ)=(μ/Λ)^{η_h}$, prove stability under infrared-integrable perturbations, and separate the bath exponent from a hard threshold exponent. For the one-electron spectral measure, the hard threshold factor is regular. The resulting edge has the local power law of a gapped unparticle spectrum, while its exponent remains a response coefficient of the unresolved photon sector.

Q Quantum Theory II-C: Electrodynamics - Correspondence with Finite-Coherent and Local QED

Gordon Liu

This paper develops the representation-level correspondence between Q electrodynamics (QQED), its finite-coherent operator/Fock realization, and renormalized local QED. The primitive physical object remains the complete Q of Paper II-A; the purpose here is not to introduce a second ontology but to show how the same finite-response mother is represented by response-space operators, Fock sectors, Hamiltonian/TOPT amplitudes and, when the response is unresolved, the ordinary local-QED organization. The exact branch is followed from its cut-plane master response through an operator-valued response lift, cocycle-Fock dynamics, a balanced contractive interaction, coefficientwise optical and TOPT-Euclidean reconstruction, and the complete one-loop self-energy/vacuum-polarization/proper-vertex Ward family. The ultraviolet proofs remain in Paper II-B. The construction is then extended to the charged-Fock domain, relative infrared completion, non-Fock charged asymptotic sectors, dressed one- and multi-Q scattering, asymptotic photon fields and response-resonance sewing.

Scalar Finite-Proper-Time Field Theory as a Complete-History Spectral Calculus

Mustafa Bakr, Tongyu Zhang

We formulate a finite-proper-time (FPT) construction for real scalar $λφ^4$ theory in which a non-zero lower endpoint $s_0$ is retained as physical spectral data for complete virtual histories. Functional differentiation partitions a pre-existing history, while interaction sewing creates closed momentum circulations. Local momentum conservation identifies the primitive closed circulations with graph circuits; applying the retained endpoint condition gives \[ s_e\ge0, \qquad \sum_{e\in c}s_e\ge s_0 \quad(c\in\mathcal{C}(G)). \] An individual edge or bridge may be arbitrarily short, but no complete closed circulation may collapse below $s_0$. This routing-independent prescription differs from damping every propagator. We prove that it gives a positive loop quadratic form and ultraviolet-finite massive amplitudes, including overlapping short-distance regions. Under a physical cut, precisely the circuit conditions crossed by the cut disappear, leaving the independently constructed daughter domains together with the ordinary pole residues and positive scalar phase space. At fixed $s_0$ we give an all-order local construction; for $λ\ge0$, $\mathcal{K}_{\barφ}\ge-\partial^2+m^2$ gives a background-uniform heat-kernel bound. The open Euclidean history kernel is virtual spectral machinery rather than the physical propagator, and physical positivity is imposed on complete boundary amplitudes. After local matching, the first non-constant one-loop on-shell correction is proportional to $s_0^2(s^2+t^2+u^2)$, providing a correlated observable test of the retained scale.

Renormalization group

Igor F. Herbut

Wilson's momentum-shell transformation with the concomitant expansion around the upper critical dimension is defined. The basic notions of relevant and irrelevant couplings, renormalization flow, and fixed points are introduced. The origins of scaling and of universality are explained, and corrections to mean-field values of critical exponents are computed. The field theoretic renormalization group is briefly discussed and used to calculate the anomalous dimension. Idea We found that the direct perturbation theory in the Ginzburg–Landau–Wilson theory breaks down below the upper critical dimension because the perturbation parameter grows with the correlation length, and so becomes arbitrarily large as the critical point is approached. If the system were finite, on the other hand, the correlation length would be bound by its size, and perturbation theory could succeed. Singular thermodynamic behavior near the critical point comes from the thermodynamic limit, or, more precisely, from those modes that have arbitrary low energies in an infinitely large system. This is called the infrared singularity . This observation suggests the following strategy to avoid the problem of direct perturbation theory. First, note that mass m only provides the energy scale in Eq. (2.36). It is practical to rescale it out by absorbing it into the chemical potential, rede- fined as 2 m μ/ħ 2 → μ, and into the interaction coupling, as 2 m λ/ħ 2 → λ. Similarly, near the critical point, the temperature T ≈ T c may be replaced by the critical temperature, and then eliminated by rescaling the action as 2 m κ B T c S /ħ 2 → S.

Superselection rules induced by infrared divergence

Joachim Kupsch

Superselection rules induced by the interaction with a mass zero Boson field are investigated for a class of exactly soluble Hamiltonian models. The calculations apply as well to discrete as to continuous superselection rules. The initial state (reference state) of the Boson field is either a normal state or a KMS state. The superselection sectors emerge if and only if the Boson field is infrared divergent, i. e. the bare photon number diverges and the ground state of the Boson field disappears in the continuum. The time scale of the decoherence depends on the strength of the infrared contributions of the interaction and on properties of the initial state of the Boson system. These results are first derived for a Hamiltonian with conservation laws. But in the most general case the Hamiltonian includes an additional scattering potential, and the only conserved quantity is the energy of the total system. The superselection sectors remain stable against the perturbation by the scattering processes.

Soft QED as Open Quantum System: Infrared Cancellation and Soft-Shell Coarse Graining

Soo-Jong Rey

I formulate unresolved soft-photon sector of QED as open quantum system. Resolved charged particles and hard photons form the system, unresolved soft photons form the environment, and basic object is the reduced density matrix. A resolved outcome $f$ of multiple hard particles and photons has probability $P_{f}(i) =\sum_n|\langle f,n|S|i,0\rangle|^2=\langle i|F_f|i\rangle$, with Kraus operators $K_n= {}_{\rm soft} \langle n|S|0 \rangle_{\rm soft}$ and effect $F_f=\sum_nK_n^\daggerΠ_fK_n$. The SK formulation places unresolved virtual and real terms in one doubled-contour expansion. At one loop they carry the same on-shell eikonal kernel with opposite signs. This elegantly organizes the QED probability: for the same observable, perturbative order, diagrams, and phase space, the OQS gives the same infrared-finite terms as the full-QED. The soft-photon evolution is a unitary coherent-state displacement driven by the scattering current. The equal-history identity of influence functional exactly normalizes this soft evolution; together with the soft-photon theorem it removes the IR divergent leading-soft factor from inclusive probability. I also derive explicit leading-soft QED realization of scale-parametrized Lindblad evolution on a fixed hard-branch space. Tracing an infinitesimal soft-photon shell produces diagonal jump operators whose entries are fixed by the corresponding eikonal emission amplitudes. The finite-shell map is a completely positive unital Schur channel and, in the sharp scale-invariant leading-soft regime, a dephasing semigroup of a completely-positive-divisible scale flow. The resulting logarithmic visibility slope and monotonic purity loss are off-diagonal predictions of the reduced-state description. The same controlled-displacement dilation gives the Sudakov probability, Poisson soft-photon multiplicities, and the bremsstrahlung number spectrum.
