Abstract

Anyon superconductivity arises from the condensation of mobile anyons rather than from a conventional Cooper instability, yet a systematic wavefunction description remains lacking. We develop a hierarchy-wavefunction construction for superconducting states derived from parent topological orders and identify their off-diagonal long-range order, condensate charge, chiral central charge, and residual topological order through the plasma analogy and topological field theories. We construct Abelian and non-Abelian examples descending from the semion state, a $ν=2/3$ hierarchy state, the $ν=1/3$ Laughlin state, $ν=1$ integer quantum Hall state, and Pfaffian state. Remarkably, for the semion case, the superconducting many-semion wavefunction is equivalent to a state of fermionized anyons filling two effective Landau levels, recovering Laughlin's original construction of semion superconductor. Finally, we show that hierarchy wavefunctions emerge naturally in the dilute, long-distance limit of the anyon-Hilbert-space formulation, which applies to ideal Chern bands and moiré bands of twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$. Our results establish a unified wavefunction-level framework linking anyon condensation, superconducting order, and topological field theory.

A Unified Categorical Description of Quantum Hall Hierarchy and Anyon Superconductivity

Donghae Seo, Taegon Lee, Gil Young Cho

We present a unified category-theoretic framework for quantum Hall hierarchy constructions and anyon superconductivity based on modular tensor categories over $\mathrm{Rep}(\mathrm{U}(1))$ and $\mathrm{sRep}(\mathrm{U}(1)^f)$. Our approach explicitly incorporates conserved $\mathrm{U}(1)$ charge and formulates doping via a generalized stack-and-condense procedure, in which an auxiliary topological order is stacked onto the parent phase, and the quasiparticles created by doping subsequently condense. Depending on whether this condensation preserves or breaks the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry, the system undergoes a transition to a quantum Hall hierarchy state or to an anyon superconductor. For anyon superconductors, the condensate charge is determined unambiguously by the charged local bosons contained in the condensable algebra. Our framework reproduces all known anyon superconductors obtained from field-theoretic analyses and further predicts novel phases, including a charge-$2e$ anyon superconductor derived from the Laughlin state and charge-$ke$ anyon superconductors arising from bosonic $\mathbb{Z}_k$ Read-Rezayi states. By placing hierarchy transitions and anyon superconductivity within a single mathematical formalism, our work provides a unified understanding of competing and proximate phases near experimentally realizable fractional quantum Hall states.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect and Topological Order: Wavefunctions, Anyons, and Chern-Simons Field Theory

Abednour Laidi

Master's thesis in Theoretical Physics. The official university title is "Fractional Quantum Hall Effect: Current State and Perspectives"; this record uses the author's preferred, more descriptive title. This thesis develops a unified description of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and topological order through three complementary frameworks: microscopic trial many-body wavefunctions, the algebraic theory of anyons and unitary modular tensor categories, and Chern-Simons effective field theory. The first part covers the physical foundations—Landau quantization, the TKNN invariant, Laughlin's wavefunctions, the hierarchy and composite fermion theories, and some non-Abelian states like the Moore-Read Pfaffian state. The second part develops the algebraic theory of anyons, from the braid group to fusion rules, quantum dimensions, topological spins, and the F- and R-matrices that characterize a unitary modular tensor category. The third part constructs the Chern-Simons effective field theory, deriving fractional charge, statistics, and ground-state degeneracy, unifying Abelian states via the K-matrix formalism, and then generalizing to non-Abelian states through 𝑈(1)ₘ × 𝑆𝑈(𝑁)ₖ Chern-Simons theory. The central result is that Chern–Simons theory provides a field-theoretic realization of the topological order introduced microscopically and algebraically in the earlier chapters, closing the circle between the three descriptions and providing a unified framework for the FQHE and topological order and anyon's physics.

Variational wavefunctions for ideal anyon gas: superfluid and skyrmion Hall crystal

Ya-Hui Zhang

The ground state of an ideal gas of anyons with statistical angle $θ\in(0,π)$ is a long-standing open problem, with renewed interest from the recent observations of fractional Chern insulators. In this work we construct variational wavefunctions that build in the exact anyon statistics and combine theory-guided composite-boson, composite-fermion and parton wavefunctions with neural-network correlations on the sphere. For spinless and SU(2) semions we confirm the paired anyon superfluid, well below the best crystal states. At $θ=π/3$ liquids and crystals are closer in energy for the spinless case. For $θ=π/3$ anyons with SU(3) flavor, we find two candidates. One is a skyrmion Hall crystal, in which the anyons form an integer quantum Hall state in the effective magnetic field from the spin texture. The other is a chiral color superconductor of six-anyon clusters, the color-flavor-locked pairing descendant of a holon metal with SU(3) color gauge symmetry and SU(3) flavor symmetry; its wavefunction is a hyperdeterminant rather than a product of parton determinants. Within our variational ansatz the color superconductor has better energy than both crystals and the color-flavor locked phases with U(1)$^2$ and Z$_3$ gauge groups. For twisted MoTe$_2$ this suggests that the reentrant integer quantum anomalous Hall phase is the skyrmion Hall crystal of the doped anyons, and that the observed superconductivity may be the color superconductor, which can undergo a transition to an $f+if$ BCS superconductor with a jump of the chiral central charge by 3.

SC$^\sharp$: superconductivity intertwined with topological order

Zhi-Qiang Gao, Yanqi Wang, Hui Yang +2 more

Superconductivity and intrinsic topological order can intertwine in ways that go beyond simple coexistence. Here we develop a classification framework for (2+1)D gapped superconductors with condensate charge $2ne$. By focusing on the topological properties of superconducting vortices, we precisely characterize this interplay. We obtain a classification with increasing levels of intertwinement, from the well known invertible superconductors without topological order, to untwisted and twisted SC$^\ast$, and finally to SC$^{\sharp}$. Our main finding is the family SC$^{\sharp}$, in which the elementary vortex carrying $h/(2ne)$ flux cannot be factorized into an invertible superconductor vortex dressed by bulk anyons, and every elementary vortex is necessarily non-Abelian. For such phases, we also obtain no-go results: the elementary vortex sector has quantum dimension at least $\sqrt{6}$ and cannot satisfy Fibonacci fusion rules. We develop a systematic algebraic framework to obtain all these superconducting phases through anyon condensation, allowing us to construct several infinite families of examples and make connections to anyon superconductivity. Finally, we introduce primitive SC$^\sharp$ phases for which factorization of every nontrivial vortex sector is obstructed, and argue that they cannot arise by disordering the relative phases of lower-charge superconducting condensates. Our classification scheme based on vortex properties allows us to uncover new distinctions between topologically ordered superconductors and constrain how they can be realized.

Hierarchy construction for non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states via anyon condensation

Carolyn Zhang, Ashvin Vishwanath, Xiao-Gang Wen

For a given parent fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}$, the hierarchy construction produces FQH states at nearby filling fractions ${{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{n}}$ by condensing minimally charged quasiholes or quasiparticles of the parent state into their own FQH states. The hierarchy construction has been useful for relating families of FQH states and for the experimental identification of the topological order of parent states via the properties of daughter states. We reinterpret the hierarchy construction as a two-step procedure: stacking with a second FQH state and condensing a condensable algebra of bosons. This two-step procedure can be applied to both Abelian and non-Abelian FQH states, and it does not require calculations with a wave function. We show this construction reproduces the hierarchies for the Laughlin and Pfaffian states, and can be applied further to propose hierarchies for various non-Abelian FQH states.

Doping lattice non-Abelian quantum Hall states

Zhengyan Darius Shi, Carolyn Zhang, T. Senthil

We study quantum phases of a fluid of mobile charged non-Abelian anyons, which arise upon doping the lattice Moore-Read quantum Hall state at lattice filling \nu = 1/2 ν = 1 / 2 and its generalizations to the Read-Rezayi ( RR_k R R k ) sequence at \nu = k/(k+2) ν = k / ( k + 2 ) . In contrast to their Abelian counterparts, non-Abelian anyons present unique challenges due to their non-invertible fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding structures. We address these challenges using a Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau (CSGL) framework that incorporates the crucial effect of energy splitting between different anyon fusion channels at nonzero dopant density. For the Moore-Read state, we show that doping the charge e/4 e / 4 non-abelion naturally leads to a fully gapped charge- 2 2 superconductor without any coexisting topological order. The chiral central charge of the superconductor depends on details of the interactions determining the splitting of anyon fusion channels. For general RR_k R R k states, our analysis of states obtained by doping the basic non-abelion a_0 a 0 with charge e/(k+2) e / ( k + 2 ) reveals a striking even/odd pattern in the Read-Rezayi index k k . We develop a general physical picture for anyon-driven superconductivity based on charge-flux unbinding, and show how it relates to the CSGL description of doped Abelian quantum Hall states. Finally, as a bonus, we use the CSGL formalism to describe transitions between the RR_k R R k state and a trivial period- (k+2) ( k + 2 ) CDW insulator at fixed filling, driven by the gap closure of the fundamental non-Abelian anyon a_0 a 0 . Notably, for k=2 k = 2 , this predicts a per
