Abstract

Kinetically constrained systems, such as those representing Rydberg atom arrays in the blockade regime, have gathered considerable attention due to the presence of atypical eigenstates in their spectrum. The latter manifests itself through the presence of quantum many-body scars as well as unusually large zero-mode (ZM) subspaces which contain analytically tractable eigenstates with various entanglement scalings. In particular, some of the latter are excitable zero-modes (EZMs), meaning that they can be promoted to a non-zero energy for open boundary conditions. In this work, I present an efficient protocol for finding analytical expressions for translation-invariant EZMs in constrained systems, based on the eigendecomposition of the local unconstrained Hamiltonian. I demonstrate the power of this method on a decorated Rydberg chain. In that model, my protocol directly produces a continuous matrix-product-state manifold located entirely in the zero-energy eigenspace for periodic boundary conditions. The span of that manifold grows exponentially with the system, and for odd system sizes it covers the entire zero-momentum eigenspace with zero energy. I then show how the physical structure of the manifold, which is tied to the local eigenbasis, also allows one to derive analytical expressions for ZMs at non-zero momentum and for a polynomial number of exact scars at $E=\pm\sqrt{3}$.

Many exact area-law scar eigenstates in the nonintegrable PXP and related models

Andrew N. Ivanov, Olexei I. Motrunich

In this work, we present new, highly non-trivial area-law exact zero-energy eigenstates of the one-dimensional (1D) PXP and related models. We formulate sufficient conditions for a matrix product state to represent an exact zero-energy eigenstate of a given 1D kinetically constrained model and use them to prove our new states. We also demonstrate that all previously known exact eigenstates of PXP-type models satisfy these conditions, and, in fact, can be directly deduced from them. We discuss and demonstrate a remarkably effective general numerical technique for discovering finite-bond-dimension eigenstates residing in degenerate subspaces of a broad class of Hamiltonians. Our results highlight a previously unrecognized structure characteristic of the exponentially large nullspaces in kinetically constrained models, suggesting the possibly of extensively many increasingly complex area-law zero-energy eigenstates in the thermodynamic limit. The important implications of these emergent exact eigenstates for the general thermalization phenomenology are exemplified by one of the states introduced in this work, which we propose is a member of the primary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum many-body scar tower responsible for long-lived revivals in the Rydberg atom chain experiment.

Extracting Quantum Many-Body Scarred Eigenstates with Matrix Product States

Shunyao Zhang, Yuan Dong, Thomas Iadecola +2 more

Quantum many-body scarred systems host nonthermal excited eigenstates immersed in a sea of thermal ones. In cases where exact expressions for these special eigenstates are not known, it is computationally demanding to distinguish them from their exponentially many thermal neighbors. We propose a matrix-product-state (MPS) algorithm, dubbed DMRG-S, to extract such states at system sizes far beyond the scope of exact diagonalization. Using this technique, we obtain scarred eigenstates in Rydberg-blockaded chains of up to 80 sites and perform a finite-size scaling study to address the lingering question of the stability for the Néel state revivals in the thermodynamic limit. Our method also provides a systematic way to obtain exact MPS representations for scarred eigenstates near the target energy without a priori knowledge. In particular, we find several new scarred eigenstates with exact MPS representations in kinetically constrained spin and clock models. The combination of numerical and analytical investigations in our work provides a new methodology for future studies of quantum many-body scars.

Quantum scars from zero modes in an Abelian lattice gauge theory

Debasish Banerjee, Arnab Sen

We consider the spectrum of a $U(1)$ quantum link model where gauge fields are realized as $S=1/2$ quantum spins and demonstrate a new mechanism for generating quantum many-body scars (high-energy eigenstates that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis) in a constrained Hilbert space. Many-body dynamics with local constraints has attracted much attention due to the recent discovery of non-ergodic behavior in quantum simulators based on Rydberg atoms. Lattice gauge theories provide natural examples of constrained systems since physical states must be gauge-invariant. In our case, the Hamiltonian $H={\cal O}_{\rm kin}+\lambda {\cal O}_{\rm pot}$, where ${\cal O}_{\rm pot}$ (${\cal O}_{\rm kin}$) is diagonal (off-diagonal) in the electric flux basis, contains exact mid-spectrum zero modes at $\lambda=0$ whose number grows exponentially with system size. This massive degeneracy is lifted at any non-zero $\lambda$ but some special linear combinations that simultaneously diagonalize ${\cal O}_{\rm kin}$ and ${\cal O}_{\rm pot}$ survive as quantum many-body scars, suggesting an order-by-disorder mechanism in the Hilbert space. We give evidence for such scars and show their dynamical consequences on ladders with up to $56$ spins, which may be tested using available proposals of quantum simulators.

Periodic Orbits, Entanglement, and Quantum Many-Body Scars in Constrained Models: Matrix Product State Approach

Wen Wei Ho, Soonwon Choi, Hannes Pichler +1 more

We analyze quantum dynamics of strongly interacting, kinetically constrained many-body systems. Motivated by recent experiments demonstrating surprising long-lived, periodic revivals after quantum quenches in Rydberg atom arrays, we introduce a manifold of locally entangled spin states, representable by low-bond dimension matrix product states, and derive equations of motion for them using the time-dependent variational principle. We find that they feature isolated, unstable periodic orbits, which capture the recurrences and represent nonergodic dynamical trajectories. Our results provide a theoretical framework for understanding quantum dynamics in a class of constrained spin models, which allow us to examine the recently suggested explanation of "quantum many-body scarring" [Nat. Phys. 14, 745 (2018)NPAHAX1745-247310.1038/s41567-018-0137-5], and establish a possible connection to the corresponding phenomenon in chaotic single-particle systems.

Exact Quantum Many-Body Scar States in the Rydberg-Blockaded Atom Chain

Cheng-Ju Lin, Olexei I. Motrunich

A recent experiment in the Rydberg atom chain observed unusual oscillatory quench dynamics with a charge density wave initial state, and theoretical works identified a set of many-body "scar states" showing nonthermal behavior in the Hamiltonian as potentially responsible for the atypical dynamics. In the same nonintegrable Hamiltonian, we discover several eigenstates at an infinite temperature that can be represented exactly as matrix product states with a finite bond dimension, for both periodic boundary conditions (two exact E=0 states) and open boundary conditions (two E=0 states and one each E=±sqrt[2]). This discovery explicitly demonstrates the violation of the strong eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in this model and uncovers exact quantum many-body scar states. These states show signatures of translational symmetry breaking with a period-2 bond-centered pattern, despite being in one dimension at an infinite temperature. We show that the nearby many-body scar states can be well approximated as "quasiparticle excitations" on top of our exact E=0 scar states and propose a quasiparticle explanation of the strong oscillations observed in experiments.

Exact many-body scars and their stability in constrained quantum chains

Federica Maria Surace, Matteo Votto, Eduardo González Lazo +3 more

Quantum scars are nonthermal eigenstates characterized by low entanglement entropy, initially detected in systems subject to nearest-neighbor Rydberg blockade, the so-called PXP model. While most of these special eigenstates elude an analytical description and seem to hybridize with nearby thermal eigenstates for large systems, some of them can be written as matrix product states with size-independent bond dimension. We study the response of these exact quantum scars to perturbations by analyzing the scaling of the fidelity susceptibility with system size. We find that some of them are anomalously stable at first order in perturbation theory, in sharp contrast to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. However, this stability seems to break down when all orders are taken into account. We further investigate models with larger blockade radius and find a set of exact quantum scars that we write down analytically and compare with the PXP exact eigenstates. We show that they exhibit the same robustness against perturbations at first order.
