Abstract

We investigate universal quantum corrections to two-body correlations in a zero-temperature binary Bose mixture using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis two-particle-irreducible effective action formalism. In the weak interspecies-coupling regime, a saddle-point treatment based on Hubbard-Stratonovich transformations can be combined with a two-loop expansion and a gapless Hartree-Fock correction, thereby preserving the Goldstone theorem and reducing the coupled two-component problem to two analytically solvable single-component theories. Within this framework, we derive the ground-state energy density as a low-density expansion in the gas parameter, together with the quantum depletion and chemical potentials. The results exhibit a simple mapping to the single-component case: the universal quantum corrections of the mixture are obtained by evaluating the known single-component series at an effective scattering length $a_{σσ}-a_{12}$ for each species, where $a_{σσ}$ and $a_{12}$ are the intra- and interspecies $s$-wave scattering lengths. This reproduces Petrov's equation of state at one-loop order in the weak-coupling limit and yields beyond-Lee-Huang-Yang corrections at two-loop order. We also analyze the role of mass imbalance, which enters the energy density through the exact rescaling factor $(1+m_{1}/m_{2})/2$.

Universal quantum effect of two-body correlation in a weakly interacting Bose gas

Phạm Thế Song

Abstract Based on the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) effective action approach and the requirement to preserve the Goldstone theorem within two-loop approximation, we study the universal quantum effect, which is related to the two-body correlation, in a homogeneous weakly interacting Bose gas at zero temperature. We find the state equations that provide the condensate fraction, energy density, chemical potential, and sound speed. They are the series expansions of the gas parameter.

Universality in ultradilute liquid Bose-Bose mixtures

Viktor Cikojević, Leandra Vranješ Markić, G. E. Astrakharchik +1 more

We have studied dilute Bose-Bose mixtures of atoms with attractive interspecies and repulsive intraspecies interactions using quantum Monte Carlo methods at $T=0$. Using a number of models for interactions, we determine the range of validity of the universal equation of state of the symmetric liquid mixture as a function of two parameters: the $s$-wave scattering length and the effective range of the interaction potential. It is shown that the Lee-Huang-Yang correction is sufficient only for extremely dilute liquids with the additional restriction that the range of the potential is small enough. Based on the quantum Monte Carlo equation of state we develop a density functional which goes beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang term and use it together with the local density approximation to determine density profiles of realistic self-bound drops.

Effective Action Approach to Quantum and Thermal Effects: From One Particle to Bose–Einstein Condensates

Luca Salasnich

We present a detailed derivation of the quantum and quantum–thermal effective action for non-relativistic systems, starting from the single-particle case and extending to the Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) field theory for weakly interacting bosons. In the single-particle framework, we introduce the one-particle-irreducible (1PI) effective action formalism, taking explicitly into account the choice of the initial quantum state, its saddle-point plus Gaussian-fluctuation approximation, and its finite-temperature extension via Matsubara summation, yielding a clear physical interpretation in terms of zero-point and thermal contributions to the Helmholtz free energy. The formalism is then applied to the GP action, producing the 1PI effective potential at zero and finite temperature, including beyond-mean-field Lee–Huang–Yang and thermal corrections. We discuss the gapless and gapped Bogoliubov spectra, their relevance to equilibrium and non-equilibrium regimes, and the role of regularization. Applications include the inclusion of an external potential within the local density approximation, the derivation of finite-temperature Josephson equations, and the extension to D-dimensional systems, with particular attention to the zero-dimensional limit. This unified approach provides a transparent connection between microscopic quantum fluctuations and effective macroscopic equations of motion for Bose–Einstein condensates.

Density-functional theory of two-component Bose gases in one-dimensional harmonic traps

Yajiang Hao, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground-state properties of two-component Bose gases confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps in the scheme of density-functional theory. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for the correlation effect properly from the weakly interacting regime to the strongly interacting regime. For the binary Bose mixture with spin-independent interaction, the homogeneous reference system is exactly solvable by the Bethe-ansatz method. Within the local-density approximation, we determine the density distribution of each component and study its evolution from Bose distributions to Fermi-like distribution with the increase in interaction. For the binary mixture of Tonks-Girardeau gases with a tunable interspecies repulsion, with a generalized Bose-Fermi transformation we show that the Bose mixture can be mapped into a two-component Fermi gas, which corresponds to exact soluble Yang-Gaudin model for the homogeneous system. Based on the ground-state energy function of the Yang-Gaudin model, the ground-state density distributions are calculated for various interspecies interactions. It is shown that with the increase in interspecies interaction, the system exhibits composite-fermionization crossover.

Self-consistent description of Bose–Bose droplets: modified gapless Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov method

Paweł Zin, Maciej Pylak, Zbigniew Idziaszek +1 more

Abstract We define a formalism of a self-consistent description of the ground state of a weakly interacting Bose system, accounting for higher order terms in expansion of energy in the diluteness parameter. The approach is designed to be applied to a Bose–Bose mixture in a regime of weak collapse where quantum fluctuations lead to stabilization of the system and formation of quantum liquid droplets. The approach is based on the generalized Gross–Pitaevskii equation accounting for quantum depletion and renormalized anomalous density terms. The equation is self-consistently coupled to modified Bogoliubov equations. We derive well defined procedure to calculate the zero temperature renormalized anomalous density—the quantity needed to correctly describe the formation of quantum liquid droplet. We pay particular attention to the case of droplets harmonically confined in some directions. The method allows to determine the Lee–Huang–Yang-type contribution to the chemical potential of inhomogeneous droplets when the local density approximation fails.

Ground-state energy and depletions for a dilute binary Bose gas

André Eckardt, Christoph Weiß, Martin Holthaus

When calculating the ground-state energy of a weakly interacting Bose gas with the help of the customary contact pseudopotential, one meets an artifical ultraviolet divergence which is caused by the incorrect treatment of the true interparticle interactions at small distances. We argue that this problem can be avoided by retaining the actual, momentum-dependent interaction matrix elements, and use this insight for computing both the ground-state energy and the depletions of a binary Bose gas mixture. Even when considering the experimentally relevant case of equal masses of both species, the resulting expressions are quite involved, and they are no straightforward generalizations of the known single-species formulas. On the other hand, we demonstrate in detail how these latter formulas are recovered from our two-species results in the limit of vanishing interspecies interaction.
