Abstract

Quantum permutations, or magic unitaries, have in recent years been explored in the context of identifying `genuinely quantum' isometries of graphs. Here, we import this tool in physics, showing that quantum permutations yield a generalisation of quantum reference frames in a discrete setting that is reminiscent of the passage from special to general relativity. We show that the typical quantum reference frames framework corresponds to quantum permutations classified as `classical' in the mathematical literature, and which we demonstrate are quantum controlled transformations (superpositions of classical coordinate maps). Genuinely quantum permutations (i) allow to construct \emph{non--commuting} quantum reference frames (ii) correspond to \emph{local}, as opposed to global, superpositions of transformations. Strikingly, we find that the non-commutativity of quantum fields, when used as reference systems, is exactly what implies that the change of frame is achieved through a genuine quantum permutation. We illustrate the above with several examples in both first and second quantization formalism, which demonstrate (a) simultaneous control on non--commuting variables, (b) the existence of bipartite states that can be localized with a genuine quantum permutation and cannot be localized with the usual quantum reference frame transformations (without introducing additional degrees of freedom), (c) extension of the Ising model symmetries to genuinely quantum permutations, and (d) extension of the symmetries of a scalar field action on curved spacetime to genuinely quantum permutations. While we have in mind applications in quantum gravity, we expect our formalism to be of interest in a wide range of topics in quantum information.

Quantum Galilei group as quantum reference frame transformations

Ángel Ballesteros, Diego Fernández-Silvestre, Flaminia Giacomini +1 more

Quantum groups have been widely explored as a tool to encode possible nontrivial generalisations of reference frame transformations, relevant in quantum gravity. In quantum information, it was found that the reference frames can be associated to quantum particles, leading to quantum reference frames transformations. The connection between these two frameworks is still unexplored, but if clarified it will lead to a more profound understanding of symmetries in quantum mechanics and quantum gravity. Here, we establish a correspondence between quantum reference frame transformations and transformations generated by a quantum deformation of the Galilei group with commutative time, taken at first order in the quantum deformation parameter. This is found once the quantum group noncommutative transformation parameters are represented on the phase space of a quantum particle, and upon setting the quantum deformation parameter to be proportional to the inverse of the mass of the particle serving as the quantum reference frame. These results allow us to show that quantum reference frame transformations are physically relevant when the state of the quantum reference frame is in a quantum superposition of semiclassical states. We conjecture that the all-order quantum Galilei group describes quantum reference frame transformations between more general quantum states of the quantum reference frame.

Spacetime Quantum Reference Frames and superpositions of proper times

Flaminia Giacomini

In general relativity, the description of spacetime relies on idealised rods and clocks, which identify a reference frame. In any concrete scenario, reference frames are associated to physical systems, which are ultimately quantum in nature. A relativistic description of the laws of physics hence needs to take into account such quantum reference frames (QRFs), through which spacetime can be given an operational meaning. Here, we introduce the notion of a spacetime quantum reference frame, associated to a quantum particle in spacetime. Such formulation has the advantage of treating space and time on equal footing, and of allowing us to describe the dynamical evolution of a set of quantum systems from the perspective of another quantum system, where the parameter in which the rest of the physical systems evolves coincides with the proper time of the particle taken as the QRF. Crucially, the proper times in two different QRFs are not related by a standard transformation, but they might be in a quantum superposition one with respect to the other.Concretely, we consider a system of N relativistic quantum particles in a weak gravitational field, and introduce a timeless formulation in which the global state of the N particles appears "frozen", but the dynamical evolution is recovered in terms of relational quantities. The position and momentum Hilbert space of the particles is used to fix the QRF via a transformation to the local frame of the particle such that the metric is locally inertial at the origin of the QRF. The internal Hilbert space corresponds to the clock space, which keeps the proper time in the local frame of the particle. Thanks to this fully relational construction we show how the remaining particles evolve dynamically in the relational variables from the perspective of the QRF. The construction proposed here includes the Page-Wootters mechanism for non interacting clocks when the external degrees of freedom are neglected. Finally, we find that a quantum superposition of gravitational redshifts and a quantum superposition of special-relativistic time dilations can be observed in the QRF.

Operational Quantum Reference Frame Transformations

Titouan Carette, Jan Glowacki, Leon Loveridge

Quantum reference frames are needed in quantum theory for much the same reasons that reference frames are in classical theories: to manifest invariance in line with fundamental relativity principles and to provide a basis for the definition of observable quantities. Though around since the 1960s, and used in a wide range of applications, only recently has the means for transforming descriptions between different quantum reference frames been tackled in detail. In this work, we provide a general, operationally motivated framework for quantum reference frames and their transformations, holding for locally compact groups. The work is built around the notion of operational equivalence, in which quantum states that cannot be physically distinguished are identified. For example, we describe the collection of relative observables as a subspace of the algebra of invariants on the composite of system and frame, and from here the set of relative states is constructed through the identification of states which cannot be distinguished by relative observables. Through the notion of framed observables – the formation of joint observables of system and frame – of which the relative observables can be understood as examples, quantum reference frame transformations are then maps between equivalence classes of relative states which respect the framing. We give an explicit realisation in the setting that the initial frame admits a highly localized state with respect to the frame observable. The transformations are invertible exactly when the final frame also has such a localizability property. The procedure we present is in operational agreement with other recent inequivalent constructions on the domain of common applicability, but extends them in a number of ways, and weakens claims of entanglement generation through frame changes.

Quantum reference frames for general symmetry groups

Anne-Catherine de la Hamette, Thomas D. Galley

A fully relational quantum theory necessarily requires an account of changes of quantum reference frames, where quantum reference frames are quantum systems relative to which other systems are described. By introducing a relational formalism which identifies coordinate systems with elements of a symmetry group G, we define a general operator for reversibly changing between quantum reference frames associated to a group G. This generalises the known operator for translations and boosts to arbitrary finite and locally compact groups, including non-Abelian groups. We show under which conditions one can uniquely assign coordinate choices to physical systems (to form reference frames) and how to reversibly transform between them, providing transformations between coordinate systems which are 'in a superposition' of other coordinate systems. We obtain the change of quantum reference frame from the principles of relational physics and of coherent change of reference frame. We prove a theorem stating that the change of quantum reference frame consistent with these principles is unitary if and only if the reference systems carry the left and right regular representations of G. We also define irreversible changes of reference frame for classical and quantum systems in the case where the symmetry group G is a semidirect product G=N (sic) P or a direct product G = N x P, providing multiple examples of both reversible and irreversible changes of quantum reference system along the way. Finally, we apply the relational formalism and changes of reference frame developed in this work to the Wigner's friend scenario, finding similar conclusions to those in relational quantum mechanics using an explicit change of reference frame as opposed to indirect reasoning using measurement operators.

Relative subsystems and quantum reference frame transformations

Esteban Castro-Ruiz, Ognyan Oreshkov

Recently there has been much effort in developing a quantum generalisation of reference frame transformations. Despite important progress, a complete understanding of their principles is still lacking. In particular, we argue that previous proposals could yield reversible transformations between arbitrary quantum reference frames only when applied to the whole universe. In contrast, here we derive quantum reference frame transformations from first principles, using only standard quantum theory. Our framework, naturally based on incoherent rather than coherent group averaging, yields reversible transformations that only depend on the reference frames and system of interest. We find more general transformations than those studied so far, which are valid only in a restricted subspace. Importantly, our framework contains additional degrees of freedom in the form of an "extra particle," which carries information about the quantum features of reference frame states. Our formalism is valid for a broad range of symmetry groups. We study the centrally extended Galilei group specifically, highlighting key differences from previous proposals.

Quantum Reference Fields Transformations in Linearized Quantum Gravity

Lin-Qing Chen, Flaminia Giacomini

Diffeomorphism invariance is a central feature of general relativity. Without external reference structures, matter and geometry must be specified relationally, with respect to internal subsystems serving as reference frames. In quantum gravity, these reference systems must themselves be treated as quantum, motivating the use of quantum reference frames. In this work, we address how such a relational description could be formulated within linearized quantum gravity. To this purpose, we introduce quantum reference fields, i.e.,sets of four dynamical scalar fields whose stress-energy tensors enter the gravitational constraints. These fields extend the notion of quantum reference frames to local field-theoretic reference systems, allowing matter and gravitational degrees of freedom to be described relationally with respect to physical quantum systems whose states cannot be sharply peaked on definite field configurations. By generalizing the perspective-neutral construction of quantum reference frames, we show that relational, gauge invariant observables admit reduced descriptions in the perspective of each quantum reference field, and we derive the unitary transformations relating them. The resulting unitary maps implement local quantum coordinate changes between different internal perspectives, and act on the linearized gravitational field with an analogous structure to a linearized diffeomorphism, but with the classical gauge parameter replaced by a physical quantum field. Finally, we construct a relational von Neumann-type measurement scheme, showing how the corresponding reduced observables can be accessed operationally from the perspective of a quantum reference field.
