Abstract

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons provides a high-dimensional resource for quantum information protocols. The dimensionality of OAM-entangled states generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is quantified by the angular Schmidt spectrum. Here, we experimentally investigate the dependence of the angular Schmidt spectrum on the thickness of the nonlinear crystal. Contrary to previous studies reporting a monotonic decrease in the Schmidt number with increasing crystal thickness, we report the first experimental observation of a nonmonotonic behavior, as we demonstrate an increase in the Schmidt number beyond a certain crystal thickness. We attribute this to the spatial walk-off effect in the anisotropic nonlinear crystal and explain it using a theoretical model that is devoid of standard phase-matching approximations. These findings can have important implications for high-dimensional entangled state generation.

Angular Schmidt spectrum of entangled photons: Derivation of an exact formula and experimental characterization for noncollinear phase matching

Girish Ashok Kulkarni, Lavanya Taneja, Shaurya Aarav +1 more

We derive an exact computationally-efficient formula for the angular Schmidt spectrum of orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states produced by parametric down-conversion (PDC). Our formula yields the true spectrum and does not suffer from convergence issues arising due to infinite summations, as has been the case with previously derived formulas. We use this formula to experimentally characterize the angular Schmidt spectrum of entangled photons produced by PDC with noncollinear phase matching. We report measurements of very broad angular Schmidt spectra, corresponding to the angular Schmidt numbers up to 229. Our work could have important implications for OAM-based quantum information applications.

Observation of OAM non-conservation in entangled photon generation

Suman Karan, Anand K. Jha

Orbital angular momentum (OAM)-entangled states produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are considered ideal for realizing high-dimensional entangled states, which have several advantages for quantum technologies. However, the limited sensitivity of current two-photon OAM detectors is a major roadblock not only for realizing such technologies but also for resolving foundational questions, such as OAM conservation in SPDC. The current theoretical understanding is that OAM is not conserved in Type-II SPDC but is conserved in Type-I. Experimentally, although non-conservation in TypeII has not been demonstrated, conservation in Type-I has been reported frequently and has become an underlying assumption for techniques generating high-dimensional OAM entangled states. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a high-sensitivity two-photon OAM detector, using which, contrary to the current understanding, we report non-conservation of OAM in Type-I SPDC. We attribute this to a spatial walk-off effect and prove it using a framework free of standard phase-matching approximations.

Enhanced orbital-angular-momentum dimensionality and spatial-spectral decoupling in thin-film SPDC

Dmitrii Akatev, Jakub Lewandowski, Maria Chekhova

Thin-film spontaneous parametric down-conversion, due to the relaxed phase-matching condition, generates photon pairs that are extremely broadband in frequency and angle and highly entangled in time/frequency and position/momentum. Here we show that it also provides a very broad orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum, which, in contrast to the case of bulk crystals, is decoupled from the frequency spectrum. To demonstrate it experimentally, we generate photon pairs in a $7~μ\mathrm{m}$-thick lithium niobate film and compare them with those from a $500~μ\mathrm{m}$-thick periodically poled lithium niobate crystal under identical pump conditions. The thin-film source exhibits a substantially broader OAM spectrum, with the azimuthal Schmidt number almost 9 times larger than that of the bulk source. On this highly entangled state, we perform quantum-state tomography in selected two- and four-dimensional OAM subspaces, demonstrating high-purity maximally entangled states. These results highlight thin nonlinear films as a promising platform for high-dimensional quantum-state generation with weak spatial--spectral coupling.

New configurations in parametric down conversion for generating light with orbital angular momentum

Juan P. Torres, Clara I. Osorio, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza

The OAM of light provides a new resource to explore quantum physics in a d-dimensional Hilbert space, beyond the two dimensional Hilbert space generated by the polarization state of the photons. The implementation of such a ddimensional quantum channel requires the generation of arbitrary engineered entangled states, thus controlling the OAM of the entangled photons is of paramount importance for many applications. Here we address the orbital angular momentum, i.e. the spatial shape, of photons generated in SPDC in non collinear geometries, when the interacting waves can exhibit Poynting vector walk off. The spatial shape depends on the interplay between the state ellipticity caused by the nonlinear geometry, and the Poynting vector walk off. The importance of both effects is dictated by the relationship between three characteristics lengths: the length of the nonlinear crystal, the walk off length and the non collinear length. The effects described here are relevant to current experiments, especially for the implementation of quantum information protocols based on spatially encoded information. Finally, the consideration of new geometries for SPDC, more specifically, highly non collinear configurations, will lead us to the discussion of the relationship between the OAM of the classical beam that pumps the nonlinear crystal, and the quantum OAM of the down converted photons. Regarding experimental measurements related to this issue, it is of great importance to make a clear distinction between the measurement of locally paraxial light beams in a suitable transverse frame, and the description of the global down conversion process, which is not necessarily paraxial.

Engineering walk-off-induced orbital angular momentum spectrum in spontaneous parametric downconversion

Yang Xu, Robert W. Boyd

Spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) has been considered as a reliable source of high- dimensional entangled states in orbital angular momentum (OAM) basis. In real-world experiments, the spatial walk-off of the pump often degrades the fidelity of the generated quantum state. Since the walk-off effect breaks the rotational symmetry of the system, the conservation of total OAM is violated. Although the compensation of walk-off effects has become a well-established experimental technique, a systematic modal analysis of the spatial walk-off effect is still incomplete for SPDC. Here, we quantitatively analyze the violation of OAM conservation due to the pump walk-off effect in SPDC processes. We have derived a scaling law of the total OAM distribution with respect to the pump walk-off angle. We have also explored the feasibility of using the spatial walk-off as a mechanism to engineer the generated quantum state. Our study has provided guidelines for the generation of OAM-entangled state under realistic experimental conditions.

The orbital angular momentum spectrum of photons generated via parametric down-conversion

Clara I. Osorio, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Juan P. Torres

The generation of paired photons entangled in orbital angular momentum (OAM), provides a new degree of freedom that is increasingly being used as a source of quantum states. Elucidation of the OAM spectrum of OAM spectrum of the generated photons is of paramount importance, since quantum information applications require the ability to generate arbitrary entangled states with the appropriate OAM correlations. Here we discuss the OAM spectrum of the photon generated via SPDC in two complementary scenarios. On one hand, we should consider the whole geometry of the nonlinear process, taking into account azimuthal variations of the nonlinear coefficient or the phase matching conditions. On the other hand, all relevant experiments reported to date detect only a small section of the full down-conversion cone. In this scenario, the measured OAM correlations depend of the emission angle of the photons and the strength of the Poynting vector walk-off. We will present experiments in SPDC where this dependence is clearly revealed.
