Abstract

We study the energy spectrum of the degenerate $χ^{(2)}$ Hamiltonian describing second-harmonic generation and parametric down-conversion at large total excitation numbers. Owing to the conservation of the total excitation number, the spectral problem reduces to the diagonalization of finite-dimensional tridiagonal matrices. Following the approach of Alvarez and Alvarez-Estrada, we map this problem onto an effective one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a double-well potential. We then derive an implicit quantization condition for the energy levels near the top of the potential barrier and obtain two explicit asymptotic formulas applicable in complementary spectral regions. The ranges of applicability of the resulting formulas are established, and their accuracy is compared with exact matrix diagonalization and with the conventional JWKB approximation. The proposed approach provides an accurate analytical description of the energy levels near the center of the spectrum, where the conventional approximation loses accuracy.

A quasiclassical analysis of second-harmonic generation

R. F. Álvarez-Estrada, Á. Gómez Nicola, Luis Lorenzo Sánchez-Soto +1 more

We investigate a quantum two-oscillator model for second-harmonic generation. The total Hamiltonian is the sum of two commuting Hamiltonians with eigenvalues E 0 and E int . The exact determination of these eigenvalues is studied using tridiagonal matrices. We present two general equations in the quasiclassical regime yielding the largest E int for a given E 0 and a representation for both eigenvalues in terms of an additional quantum number. Some numerical analysis shows that both equations are fairly consistent for suitably large quantum numbers with the exact quantum results. An approximate analytical expression for the wavefunction is also given.

Exact and approximate energy spectrum for the finite square well and related potentials

O. F. de Alcantara Bonfim, David J. Griffiths

We investigate the problem of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional finite square well. In the standard approach the allowed energies are determined implicitly as the solutions to a transcendental equation. We obtain the spectrum analytically as the solution to a pair of parametric equations and algebraically using a remarkably accurate approximation to the cosine function. The approach is also applied to a variety of other quantum wells.

Parametric model for high-order harmonic generation with quantized fields

Ákos Gombkötő, Sándor Varró, B.G. Pusztai +4 more

A quantum optical model for high-order harmonic generation is presented in which both the exciting field and the high-order harmonic modes are quantized, while the target material appears only via parameters. As a consequence, the model is independent of the excited material system to a large extent and allows us to focus on the properties of the electromagnetic fields. Technically, the Hamiltonian known for parametric down-conversion is adopted, where photons in the $n\mathrm{th}$ harmonic mode are created during the annihilation of $n$ photons from the fundamental mode. In our treatment, initially, the fundamental mode is in a coherent state corresponding to large photon numbers, while the high-order harmonic modes are in vacuum state. Due to the interaction, the latter modes get populated while the fundamental one loses photons. Analytical approximations are presented for the time evolution that are verified by numerically exact calculations. For multimode, finite-bandwidth excitation, the time dependence of the high-order harmonic radiation is also given.

Energy Spectrum of the Dicke Hamiltonian

Lorenzo M. Narducci, Miguel Orszag, Richard A. Tuft

In this paper we analyze the energy eigenvalues of the Dicke Hamiltonian which describes the interaction of $N$ two-level atoms with an electromagnetic field. Using as a starting point the classification of the collective states proposed by Tavis and Cummings, we first derive approximate analytic expressions for the energy eigenvalues which are appropriate for special values of the collective parameters. We next evaluate a first-order correction which allows the application of our results to a wider class of collective states. An accurate description of the energy spectrum for arbitrary values of the collective parameters is provided using a method first introduced by Scharf for the case of resonant interaction, suitably generalized to account for possible frequency detuning between the radiation and the atomic resonant frequency. The limit of validity of the approximation is analyzed and the results compared with the numerical diagonalization of the Dicke Hamiltonian. With the exception of asymptotically small ranges of values of the parameters, the analytic expression for the density of energy eigenvalues derived in this paper compares very well with the results of the numerical diagonalization.

Energy eigenvalues for an arbitrary potential well with N minima

Örjan Dammert

For a general smooth one-dimensional potential well with N minima (containing N−1 barrier humps of arbitrary shape), a phase-integral quantization condition (including σ terms) is obtained, from which the energy eigenvalues can be calculated with an accuracy relative to the chosen order of the Fröman phase-integral approximation. The quantization equation is derived from a condition for total transmission through a general system of potential barriers of arbitrary shape, by means of a limiting procedure, in which the two outermost barriers are made to grow large in a particular way. Finally, the quantization condition is expressed by means of a concise recursion formula. As an illustration, the special case N=2 is treated in some detail. For N=2, the quantization condition turns out to be identical to a previously well-known phase-integral quantization condition for the double-minimum potential, the accuracy of which has been examined in several papers by other authors. Their results concerning a symmetric double-minimum model potential show that when the σ term is included, the third- and fifth-order energy eigenvalues are accurate enough for all practical purposes, even close to the barrier maximum, but if the σ term is neglected, the quantization condition breaks down near the barrier maximum, this breakdown becoming more dramatic with increasing order. A table displaying phase-integral eigenvalues for the model potential as compared with exact (numerical) quantum mechanical results is given here; the figures are quoted from the papers mentioned. Applying the results to the special case N=3, it will be given explicitly the quantization condition for an arbitrary triple-minimum potential.

Quantum-Mechanical Amplification and Frequency Conversion with a Trilinear Hamiltonian

Daniel F. Walls, Richard G. Barakat

A description of the parametric amplifier and frequency converter is presented without introducing the classical (i.e., parametric) approximation for the pumping field. Constants of the motion are found which reduce the solution of the Schr\"odinger equation to the diagonalization of a matrix. This diagonalization is accomplished numerically, and the eigenvalues and eigen-functions of a system with fixed energy are calculated. The time-dependent behavior of the mean number of photons in the amplified or frequency up-converted field is presented. The time evolution of the probability distributions is illustrated. The technique is extended to the problem of coherent spontaneous emission from a system of $N$ two-level atoms interacting with the radiation field where both the atomic system and the radiation field are quantized.
