Abstract

We study the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) Hamiltonian $H_{\operatorname{SYK}}$ on $n$ Majorana modes with $k$-body interactions, and prove that $\mathbb{E}\|H_{\operatorname{SYK}}\|_{\operatorname{op}} = (1 - o(1))\cdot\sqrt{2n}/k$ for super-constant $k\leq o(\sqrt{n})$, where the expectation is over the disorder variables in the Hamiltonian. This confirms predictions due to Garcia-Garcia, Jia and Verbaarschot and answers a question posed by Feng, Tian, and Wei. Our results extend to the sparse SYK Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we obtain that a dissipative quantum algorithm due to Basso, Chen, and Dalzell provably computes the ground state energy of the SYK Hamiltonian up to an $O(1)$-multiplicative factor for all $k < \sqrt{n}/4$. Our key technical idea is identifying an explicit, deterministic linear operator $\mathsf{x}$ such that a fixed quadratic form of $\mathsf{x}^{2\ell}$ exactly equals the expected trace moments of the SYK Hamiltonian for every $n$ and $k$. This linear operator can be naturally viewed as a twisted model of bosons on the space of hyperedges of a hypergraph. The problem thus reduces to identifying the spectral edge of $\mathsf{x}$, which we show is dominated by the spectrum of a natural ${n \choose k}$-dimensional matrix from the Johnson scheme and is straightforward to compute using known results. To show that our bound is sharp, we construct a witness state with a large quadratic form on $\mathsf{x}$ and transform it into a certificate of a lower bound on the largest quadratic form on $H_{\operatorname{SYK}}$. Beyond the SYK Hamiltonian, our techniques also apply to the $k-$local quantum spin glass (QSG), yielding $\mathbb{E}\|H_{k-\operatorname{QSG}}\|_{\operatorname{op}}\leq O(\sqrt{n/k})$ for all $1\leq k\leq\sqrt{n}/2$, thus improving the standard $O(\sqrt{n})$ bound by a factor of $\sqrt{k}$.

Free energy and spectral edge of the SYK model

Y He

Consider the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with $N$ Majorana fermions and interaction order $q$. For even $4\leq q\ll \sqrt{N}$, we present a microscopic framework that determines the free energy limit at every fixed inverse temperature $β>0$. In particular, this gives the first rigorous derivation of the Schwinger-Dyson thermodynamics of the model. For all even $q\in \{4,6,...,N-4\}$, we further determine the asymptotic location of the largest eigenvalue, which answers a question posed by Feng-Tian-Wei \cite{FengTianWei1}. Consequently, we obtained the free energy limit along every sequence $β\equiv β_N\to\infty$.

Optimizing Sparse SYK

Matthew Ding, Robbie King, Bobak T. Kiani +1 more

Finding the ground state of strongly-interacting fermionic systems is often the prerequisite for fully understanding both quantum chemistry and condensed matter systems. The Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model is a representative example of such a system; it is particularly interesting not only due to the existence of efficient quantum algorithms preparing approximations to the ground state such as Hastings–O'Donnell (STOC 2022), but also known no-go results for many classical ansatzes in preparing low-energy states. However, this quantum-classical separation is known to not persist when the SYK model is sufficiently sparsified, i.e., when terms in the model are discarded with probability 1 − p , where p = Θ ( 1 / n 3 ) and n is the system size. This raises the question of how robust the quantum and classical complexities of the SYK model are to sparsification. In this work we initiate the study of the sparse SYK model where p ∈ [ Θ ( 1 / n 3 ) , 1 ] and show there indeed exists a certain robustness of sparsification. We prove that with high probability, Gaussian states achieve only a Θ ( 1 / n ) -factor approximation to the true ground state energy of sparse SYK for all p ≥ Ω ( log ⁡ n / n 2 ) , and that Gaussian states cannot achieve constant-factor approximations unless p ≤ O ( log 2 ⁡ n / n 3 ) . Additionally, we prove that the quantum algorithm of Hastings–O'Donnell still achieves a constant-factor approximation to the ground state energy when p ≥ Ω ( log ⁡ n / n ) . Combined, these show a provable separation between classical algorithms outputting Gaussian states and efficient quantum algorithms for the goal of finding approximate sparse SYK ground states whenever p ≥ Ω ( log ⁡ n / n ) , extending the analogous p = 1 result of Hastings–O'Donnell.

Universality and Thouless energy in the supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, Yiyang Jia, J. J. M. Verbaarschot

We investigate the supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, $N$ Majorana fermions with infinite range interactions in $0+1$ dimensions. We have found that, close to the ground state $E\ensuremath{\approx}0$, discrete symmetries alter qualitatively the spectral properties with respect to the non-supersymmetric SYK model. The average spectral density at finite $N$, which we compute analytically and numerically, grows exponentially with $N$ for $E\ensuremath{\approx}0$. However the chiral condensate, which is normalized with respect the total number of eigenvalues, vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. Slightly above $E\ensuremath{\approx}0$, the spectral density grows exponentially with the energy. Deep in the quantum regime, corresponding to the first $O(N)$ eigenvalues, the average spectral density is universal and well described by random matrix ensembles with chiral and superconducting discrete symmetries. The dynamics for $E\ensuremath{\approx}0$ is investigated by level fluctuations. Also in this case we find excellent agreement with the prediction of chiral and superconducting random matrix ensembles for eigenvalue separations smaller than the Thouless energy, which seems to scale linearly with $N$. Deviations beyond the Thouless energy, which describes how ergodicity is approached, are universally characterized by a quadratic growth of the number variance. In the time domain, we have found analytically that the spectral form factor $g(t)$, obtained from the connected two-level correlation function of the unfolded spectrum, decays as $1/{t}^{2}$ for times shorter but comparable to the Thouless time with $g(0)$ related to the coefficient of the quadratic growth of the number variance. Our results provide further support that quantum black holes are ergodic and therefore can be classified by random matrix theory.

The Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model: Q-Laguerre spectral density and quantum chaos.

Lucas Sá, Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a

We study the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (WSYK) model consisting of two $\hat{q}$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with general complex couplings, one the complex conjugate of the other, living in off-diagonal blocks of a larger WSYK Hamiltonian. In the limit of large number $N$ of Majoranas and $\hat{q} \propto \sqrt N$, we employ diagrammatic and combinatorial techniques to show that the spectral density of the model can be approximated by the weight function of the Al-Salam-Chihara Q-Laguerre polynomials. For $\hat{q} = 2, 3, 4$, the analytical spectral density, with $Q=Q(\hat{q},N)$ computed analytically, agrees well with numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization. The spectrum is positive with a hard edge at zero energy and, for odd $\hat{q}$, low-energy excitations grow as a stretched exponential, though the functional form is different from that of the supersymmetric SYK model. The microscopic spectral density and level statistics close to the hard edge are very well approximated by that of an ensemble of random matrices belonging to non-standard universality classes, which indicates quantum chaotic dynamics.

Optimizing sparse fermionic Hamiltonians

Yaroslav Herasymenko, Maarten Stroeks, Jonas Helsen +1 more

We consider the problem of approximating the ground state energy of a fermionic Hamiltonian using a Gaussian state. In sharp contrast to the dense case [1, 2], we prove that strictly q -local sparse fermionic Hamiltonians have a constant Gaussian approximation ratio; the result holds for any connectivity and interaction strengths. Sparsity means that each fermion participates in a bounded number of interactions, and strictly q -local means that each term involves exactly q fermionic (Majorana) operators. We extend our proof to give a constant Gaussian approximation ratio for sparse fermionic Hamiltonians with both quartic and quadratic terms. With additional work, we also prove a constant Gaussian approximation ratio for the so-called sparse SYK model with strictly 4 -local interactions (sparse SYK- 4 model). In each setting we show that the Gaussian state can be efficiently determined. Finally, we prove that the O(n−1/2) Gaussian approximation ratio for the normal (dense) SYK- 4 model extends to SYK- q for even q>4 , with an approximation ratio of O(n1/2–q/4) . Our results identify non-sparseness as the prime reason that the SYK- 4 model can fail to have a constant approximation ratio [1, 2].

Q -Laguerre spectral density and quantum chaos in the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Lucas Sá, Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a

We study the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (WSYK) model consisting of two $\stackrel{^}{q}$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with general complex couplings, one the Hermitian conjugate of the other, living in off-diagonal blocks of a larger WSYK Hamiltonian. The spectrum is positive with a hard edge at zero energy. We employ diagrammatic and combinatorial techniques to compute analytically the low-order moments of the Hamiltonian. In the limit of large number $N$ of Majoranas, we have found striking similarities with the moments of the weight function of the Al-Salam-Chihara $Q$-Laguerre polynomials. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=3$, 4, the $Q$-Laguerre prediction, with $Q=Q(\stackrel{^}{q},N)$ also computed analytically, agrees well with exact diagonalization results for $30<N\ensuremath{\le}34$ while we observe some deviations for $\stackrel{^}{q}=2$. The most salient feature of the spectral density is that, for odd $\stackrel{^}{q}$, low-energy excitations grow as a stretched exponential, with a functional form different from that of the supersymmetric SYK model. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=4$, a detailed analysis of level statistics reveals quantum chaotic dynamics even for time scales substantially shorter than the Heisenberg time. More specifically, the spacing ratios in the bulk of the spectrum and the microscopic spectral density and the number variance close to the hard edge are very well approximated by that of an ensemble of random matrices that, depending on $N$, belong to the chiral or superconducting universality classes. In particular, we report the first realization of level statistics belonging to the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble universality class, which completes the tenfold-way classification in the SYK model.
