Abstract

We introduce the pair second-order correlation function $g_{\textrm{pairs}}^{\left(2\right)}=\left\langle \left(P^{\dagger}\right)^{2}P^{2}\right\rangle /\left\langle P^{\dagger}P\right\rangle ^{2}$, defined through the pair operator $P^{\dagger}=a^{\dagger}b^{\dagger}$, to characterize second-order correlations and pair bunching and antibunching in photon-pair creation processes. This quantity directly probes correlations between pair-generation events within a single two-mode quantum state, providing access to the intrinsic pair-generation process beyond conventional single-mode or heralded second-order correlations, which do not directly capture correlations between pair events. Values of $g_{\textrm{pairs}}^{\left(2\right)}$ greater than, equal to, or less than unity correspond respectively to pair bunching, Poissonian pair statistics, and pair antibunching. Using the Cauchy--Schwarz inequality, we further show that all classical two-mode fields described by a positive Glauber--Sudarshan \ensuremath{P}-function satisfy $g_{\textrm{pairs}}^{\left(2\right)}\geq1$, so that pair antibunching is classically forbidden and constitutes an unambiguous signature of nonclassicality. We evaluate $g_{\textrm{pairs}}^{\left(2\right)}$ for several representative quantum states and show, in particular, that even arbitrarily weak two-mode squeezed vacuum states exhibit pair bunching. Comparison with heralded second-order correlations highlights the complementary information provided by these observables. The proposed correlation function is experimentally accessible via standard coincidence measurements, requires no phase reference or state reconstruction, and remains invariant under uniform loss.

Correlated two-mode SU(1, 1) coherent states: nonclassical properties

Christopher C. Gerry

The properties of correlated two-mode SU(1, 1) coherent states are studied. These states are a generalization of the two-mode squeezed vacuum states and are generated by applying the two-mode squeeze operator to a state in which there are initially q photons in one mode, |q, 0〉, the squeezed vacuum (q = 0) obviously being a special case. For these states the photon-number distribution and the nonclassical properties of photon antibunching, enhanced phase fluctuations, violations of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, two-mode squeezing, and sum squeezing are studied. A Q-function quasi-probability distribution for these states is also presented.

ANTIBUNCHING EFFECT OF TWO PHOTON FLUORESCENT LIGHT FOR A TWO LEVEL ATOM IN A SQUEEZED VACUUM

Feng Xun-Li, Lin-sheng He, Liu Yong-liang +1 more

By using the two photon Bloch equation and quantum regression theorem, the second order correlation function of two photon fluorescence of a two level atom in a broad band squeezed vacuum is obtained. From this, the bunching and the antibunching effects of two photon fluorescence are investigated. We find that the second order correlation function is dependent on the squeezing parameter (|M|) of the squeezed vacuum. There is a critical value (Γ/4g) for |M|,above which the second order correlation function oscillates around 1. This indicates that the two photon fluorescence can exhibit both antibunching and bunching effects. Below the critical value, the second order correlation function does not oscillate and the two photon fluorescence exhibits the antibunching effect only.

Conditioned photon statistics of an optical parametric oscillator

Mambwe Mumba, Perry R. Rice

The output of a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO), for weak driving fields, is highly bunched. The photons tend to come out in pairs. Nonclassical behaviour is evident in the output of the DOPO, but usually involves interferometric investigations, as in the spectrum of squeezing, or a Mandel–Hong–Ou interferometer. We discuss a conditioned measurement of the second-order intensity correlation function g(2)(τ) that yields antibunching. By only measuring the second-order intensity correlation function g(2)(τ) after a photon has been detected, large bunching is turned into almost perfect antibunching.

Hierarchy of higher-order correlation functions and photonblockade in non-Gaussian pair coherent states

Anjali Jatwani, Amit Verma

Abstract Recently, non-Gaussian operations on pair coherent states have been shown to significantly enhance various nonclassical properties, including linear entropy, Q -function, and fidelity. In the present work, we perform a systematic investigation of higher-order correlation functions (CFs) for different classes of non-Gaussian pair coherent states (NGPCSs). Such higher-order correlations are experimentally accessible and provide direct signatures of fundamental quantum phenomena, including photon antibunching, photon blockade (PB), the possibility of single photon source, and multiphoton suppression, which are crucial for quantum information and communication applications. By evaluating the normalized second-, third-, and fourth-order CFs, we analyze the emergence of higher-order antibunching and the possibility of the PB phenomenon as functions of the state parameter | ξ | and photon-operation parameters. All considered states satisfy the hierarchy g ( 4 ) ( 0 ) < g ( 3 ) ( 0 ) < g ( 2 ) ( 0 ) < 1 , and, for suitable parameter regimes, g ( n ) ( 0 ) → 0 , indicating strong suppression of multiphoton excitations and PB. A systematic analysis is provided for different classes of NGPCSs, e.g. photon-added-subtracted, photon-subtracted-added, photon-added-added, and photon-subtracted in two modes of pair coherent states. These observations are further supported by some statistical ratios of CFs, e.g. quality factors, multiphoton suppression ratios, and score. Our results establish non-Gaussian photon engineering as a powerful approach for tailoring multiphoton statistics and realizing controllable few-photon light sources. The engineered pair coherent states studied here thus provide promising platforms for applications in quantum communication, quantum information processing, and photonic quantum technologies.

Nonclassical statistics of fields in pair coherent states

G. S. Agarwal

We examine the nonclassical properties of the pair coherent states defined as the simultaneous eigenstates of the operator that annihilates photons in pairs and of the operator that gives the relative occupation number in the two modes. We show that fields in such states have remarkable quantum features such as sub-Poissonian statistics correlations in the number fluctuations, squeezing, and violations of Cauchy–Schwarz inequalities. We show how such pair coherent states can be generated by the competition of different nonlinear processes in a two-photon medium. The quantam features occur not only in the transient domain but also survive in the steady state because of the balance between nonlinear processes.

Nonclassical photon statistics of two-mode squeezed states

Ching Tsung Lee

The concept of photon antibunching as a manifestation of nonclassical character in single-mode radiation is extended to two-mode radiation. A simple criterion for the existence of nonclassical effects in two-mode radiation is established. It implies that the intermode photon bunching, rather than antibunching, can play a key role in rendering two-mode radiation nonclassical. The two-mode squeezed vacuum states are used as simple examples to illustrate the essential point of the criterion. The criterion is then used to study the nonclassical properties of two types of two-mode squeezed states. A state generated by applying the squeeze operator to the two-mode vacuum first, followed by the displacement operator, is called a two-mode coherent squeezed state. If the order of the two operators is reversed, a two-mode squeezed coherent state is obtained. It is found that the latter has a much stronger tendency to become a nonclassical state than the former, assuming that the parameters involved are all the same. A measure of nonclassical depth of radiation is adopted. It is found that, according to this measure, the effect of squeezing in making two-mode coherent squeezed states nonclassical is not monotonic. Such phenomena do not occur in squeezed coherent states.
