Abstract

We investigate the quantum dissipative dynamics of a charged magneto-oscillator(CMO) coupled to a heat bath of harmonic oscillators in the presence of an additional field-bath interaction. The problem is formulated within the framework of the generalized quantum Langevin equation, where the external confining potential modifies the random force correlations and the memory kernel of the environment, and the effective spring constant. Using the corresponding non-Markovian master equation, we examine the influence of the field-bath coupling on the temporal decay of the reduced density matrix of the system. We show that the additional interaction leads to an enhancement of the decoherence rate by altering the dissipative response of the bath. Thus our results shed light on the role of field-bath coupling in the quantum to classical transition of a CMO. The resulting fluctuation-dissipation relation is analyzed, and the position autocorrelation, position-velocity correlation and velocity autocorrelation are obtained explicitly. The dependence of these experimentally accessible quantities on the field-bath coupling parameter is discussed. We outline an experimental proposal for testing our theoretical predictions. The study sheds light on reservoir engineering which is central to quantum technologies.

Decoherence of a charged Brownian particle in a magnetic field: an analysis of the roles of coupling via position and momentum variables

Suraka Bhattacharjee, Koushik Mandal, Supurna Sinha

Abstract The study of decoherence plays a key role in our understanding of the transition from the quantum to the classical world. Typically, one considers a system coupled to an external bath which forms a model for an open quantum system. While most of the studies pertain to a position coupling between the system and the environment, some involve a momentum coupling, giving rise to an anomalous diffusive model. Here we have gone beyond existing studies and analyzed the non-Markovian master equation, involving the quantum Langevin dynamics of a harmonically oscillating charged Brownian particle in the presence of a magnetic field and coupled to Ohmic (s = 1), sub-Ohmic (s < 1) and super-Ohmic (s > 1) heat baths via both position and momentum couplings. The presence of both position and momentum couplings leads to a stronger interaction with the environment, resulting in a faster loss of coherence compared to a situation where only position coupling is present. The rate of decoherence can be tuned by controlling the relative strengths of the position and momentum coupling parameters. In addition, the magnetic field results in the slowing down of the loss of information from the system, irrespective of the nature of coupling between the system and the bath. A faster decoherence rate is observed for higher values of the Ohmicity parameter ‘s’. Our results can be experimentally verified by designing a suitable ion trap setup.

Quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem for a dissipative charged magneto-oscillator: Effect of dissipation, memory, and magnetic field

Jasleen Kaur, Aritra Ghosh, Malay Bandyopadhyay

In this paper, we formulate and study the quantum counterpart of the energy equipartition theorem for a charged quantum particle moving in a harmonic potential in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field and linearly coupled to a passive quantum heat bath through coordinate variables. The bath is modeled as a collection of independent quantum harmonic oscillators. We derive closed form expressions for the mean kinetic and potential energies of the charged dissipative magneto-oscillator in the forms ${E}_{k}=\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathcal{E}}_{k}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and ${E}_{p}=\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathcal{E}}_{p}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, respectively, where ${\mathcal{E}}_{k}$ and ${\mathcal{E}}_{p}$ denote the average kinetic and potential energies of individual thermostat oscillators. The net averaging is twofold; the first one is over the Gibbs canonical state for the thermostat, giving ${\mathcal{E}}_{k}$ and ${\mathcal{E}}_{p}$, and the second one, denoted by $\ensuremath{\langle}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, is over the frequencies $\ensuremath{\omega}$ of the bath oscillators which contribute to ${E}_{k}$ and ${E}_{p}$ according to probability distributions ${\mathcal{P}}_{k}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ and ${\mathcal{P}}_{p}(\ensuremath{\omega})$, respectively. The relationship of the present quantum version of the equipartition theorem with that of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (within the linear-response theory framework) is also explored. Further, we investigate the influence of the external magnetic field and the effect of different dissipation processes through Gaussian decay and Drude and radiation bath spectral density functions on the typical properties of ${\mathcal{P}}_{k}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ and ${\mathcal{P}}_{p}(\ensuremath{\omega})$. Finally, the role of system-bath coupling strength and the memory effect is analyzed in the context of average kinetic and potential energies of the dissipative charged magneto-oscillator.

Decoherence of a dissipative Brownian charged magneto-anharmonic oscillator: an information theoretic approach

Suraka Bhattacharjee, Koushik Mandal, Supurna Sinha

Abstract We study the decoherence of an anisotropic anharmonic oscillator in a magnetic field, coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators at high and low temperatures. We solve the anharmonic oscillator problem using perturbative techniques and derive the non-Markovian master equation in the weak coupling limit. The anharmonicity parameter α enhances decoherence due to the deconfining effect of anharmonicity. The oscillatory nature of the time evolution of heating function indicates information backflow. The von-Neumann entropy is also calculated for the system, which increases with α , consistent with the deconfining effect noted in the decoherence analysis. We have also proposed a cold ion experimental set up for testing our theoretical predictions. The study is of relevance to the domain of quantum technology where decoherence significantly affects the performance of a quantum computer.

Quantum Langevin equation of a charged oscillator in a magnetic field and coupled to a heat bath through momentum variables

Shamik Gupta, Malay Bandyopadhyay

We obtain the quantum Langevin equation (QLE) of a charged quantum particle moving in a harmonic potential in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field and linearly coupled to a quantum heat bath through momentum variables. The bath is modeled as a collection of independent quantum harmonic oscillators. The QLE involves a random force which does not depend on the magnetic field, and a quantum-generalized classical Lorentz force. These features are also present in the QLE for the case of particle-bath coupling through coordinate variables. However, significant differences are also observed. For example, the mean force in the QLE is characterized by a memory function that depends explicitly on the magnetic field. The random force has a modified form with correlation and commutator different from those in the case of coordinate-coordinate coupling. Moreover, the coupling constants, in addition to appearing in the random force and in the mean force, also renormalize the inertial term and the harmonic potential term in the QLE.

Effects of an External Field and Dissipation on Decoherence

Zuo, Jian

Decoherence is the suppression of the interference of quantum states. It plays important roles in the study of the quantum-classical transition. It is also the major obstacle in the implementation of various schemes of quantum computers. Decoherence can be affected by many factors. The interactions between quantum systems of interest and dissipative environments cause the extensively studied environment-induced-decoherence. Decoherence can also occur as the result of a temperature effect. A recent experiment investigated the engineering of decoherence, which involves applying an external field to the quantum system. In this thesis, we study the effect of an external field on decoherence in the case of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a heat bath by calculating its contribution to the attenuation coefficient, which is a measure of decoherence in coordinate space and involves directly observable probability distributions. It is found that, while non-random external force does not result in decoherence, a random external force can lead to intrinsic decoherence that does not require a dissipative environment. The attenuation coefficient for a free harmonic oscillator in a dissipative environment is also calculated using the solution of the initial value quantum Langevin equation. One of the key results obtained is that ”decoherence without dissipation” does not occur in the case of a free harmonic oscillator, in contrast to the case of a free particle.

Quantum Brownian magneto-oscillator: Role of environmental spectrum and external magnetic field in decoherence and decay processes

Asam Rajesh, Malay Bandyopadhyay

In this work, we consider the dissipative dynamics of a quantum Brownian magneto-oscillator in contact with different types of environment at zero temperature as well as at high temperatures. We derive closed-form expressions of decay rate and heating rate for the magneto-oscillator in contact with Ohmic, sub-Ohmic, and super-Ohmic environments with non-Markovian characteristics. The present study is useful in determining the relationship between the thermalization dynamics of a magneto-oscillator and different forms of environmental spectrum and external magnetic field. Although our study is limited to the short-time (Non-Markovian) and long-time (Markovian) regimes, it manifests that one can actually tune the effective coupling of the system reservoir either by tuning oscillator frequency through reservoir engineering techniques or changing external magnetic field. Thus the present work establishes the essential role of non-Markovian dissipation and the crucial role of magnetic field in the environment induced decoherence and decay processes of the dissipative magneto-oscillator.
