The Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) is a lower bound on the stress-energy tensor in quantum field theory that has been proved quite generally. It can equivalently be phrased as a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of the relative entropy Srel(ρ||σ) of an arbitrary state ρ with respect to the vacuum σ. The relative entropy has a natural one-parameter family generalization, the Sandwiched Rényi divergence Sn(ρ||σ), which also measures the distinguishability of two states for arbitrary n ∈ [1/2, ∞). A Rényi QNEC, a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of Sn(ρ||σ), was conjectured in previous work. In this work, we study the Rényi QNEC for free and superrenormalizable field theories in spacetime dimension d > 2 using the technique of null quantization. In the above setting, we prove the Rényi QNEC in the case n > 1 for arbitrary states. We also provide counterexamples to the Rényi QNEC for n < 1.
Abstract The Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) is a lower bound on the stress-energy tensor in quantum field theory that has been proved quite generally.
We introduce a new cumulant-based quantum relative Rényi functional as a candidate quantum Rényi divergence, derived from the cumulant-generating function (CGF) of the quantum relative surprisal operator and extending the classical connection between Rényi divergence and statistical cumulants to the quantum setting. Unlike the Petz and sandwiched quantum Rényi divergences, the proposed construction is motivated by statistical structure rather than operator-algebraic or operational principles. The functional naturally admits a path-integral-like representation through the Lie-Trotter product expansion, providing a trajectory-based interpretation of quantum divergence in Hilbert space. On its natural non-regularized domain for
α>1 under the support condition
supp(ρ)⊆supp(σ), we establish several fundamental properties, including positivity, reduction to the classical case, additivity, unitary invariance, continuity, and monotonicity with respect to the Renyi parameter
α. Whether the functional satisfies the quantum data-processing inequality (QDPI) under arbitrary CPTP maps remains open. To extend the analysis beyond the studied regime, we introduce a regularized version of the functional and study its behavior at
α=0. We show that the resulting relative quantumness quantity vanishes if and only if the underlying states commute, yielding a necessary and sufficient characterization of non-commutativity. For commutativity-preserving (CoP) channels, we further conjecture a QDPI-type monotonicity relation for this quantity. Extensive numerical simulations provide strong evidence in support of this conjecture, with no violations observed for the CoP channels considered in this work.
The quantum null energy condition (QNEC) is usually stated as a bound on the expectation value of null components of the stress-energy tensor at a point in terms of second null shape variations of the entanglement entropy at the same point. It can be recast as the statement that the sign of the second null shape variation of the relative entropy of any state with respect to the vacuum is positive. Using instead a R\'enyi generalization of relative entropy, called sandwiched R\'enyi divergence (SRD), leads to what is termed the R\'enyi QNEC: The second null shape variation of SRD of any state with respect to the vacuum is positive. In this work, we prove the R\'enyi QNEC for free and superrenormalizable fermionic quantum field theories in spacetime dimensions greater than 2 using null quantization, for the case where the R\'enyi parameter
n>1. We end with comments on multiple possible generalizations.
Energy conditions play an important role in constraining the dynamics of quantum field theories as well as gravitational theories. For example, in semi-classical gravity, the achronal averaged null energy condition (AANEC) can be used to prove that it is always slower to traverse through a wormhole than to travel around via its exterior. Such conditions prevent causality violations that would lead to paradoxes. Recent advances have been made in proving previously conjectured energy conditions directly in quantum field theory (QFT) as well as in uncovering new ones. This thesis will be an exploration of various energy inequalities in conformal field theories (CFTs) as well as semi-classical quantum gravity. At the core of this work lies the recently proved quantum null energy condition (QNEC). The QNEC bounds the null energy flowing past a point by a certain second shape derivative of entanglement entropy. We will demonstrate that the QNEC represents a deep connection between causality, energy and entanglement in quantum field theories. We explore this connection first in the context of holographic CFTs. Calculations in holographic theories will lead us to conjecture that the so-called diagonal QNEC is saturated in all interacting QFTs. We will then provide further, independent evidence that this conjecture holds for all CFTs with a twist gap by explicitly calculating shape derivatives of entanglement entropy using defect CFT techniques.
We prove the Rényi quantum null energy condition for every integer Rényi order
n≥2. In local Poincaré-invariant quantum field theory, this states that the sandwiched Rényi divergence (SRD) of an excited state relative to the vacuum is convex along a future-directed null deformation. We assume that the deformation is realized by the canonical translations of a half-sided modular inclusion and that the divergence is finite for the initial, undeformed algebra. The proof establishes convexity of the SRD along the induced positive contraction semigroup on Haagerup
Ln(M), for every non-zero positive initial element. We also establish a Rényi ant formula at every even integer order and, under an additional regularity assumption, at odd integer orders. The Rényi ant formula identifies the negative first null derivative of SRD with a multiple of the infimum of the canonical null-translation energy over vector purifications of an escort state constructed from the excited state and the vacuum.
