Abstract

We show that the category of orthomodular posets is a full coreflective subcategory of the category of strong orthoposets, those orthoposets in which any two orthogonal elements have a join. This coreflection is obtained by building from a strong orthoposet $P$, an orthomodular poset with the same underlying set and same orthocomplementation as $P$, but with modified order. This coreflector restricts to a functor from the category of ortholattices to the category of orthomodular posets, and this functor is right adjoint.

Sublattices and Δ-blocks of orthomodular posets

Ivan Chajda, Helmut Länger

Abstract States of quantum systems correspond to vectors in a Hilbert space and observations to closed subspaces. Hence, this logic corresponds to the algebra of closed subspaces of a Hilbert space. This can be considered as a complete lattice with orthocomplementation, but it is not distributive. It satisfies a weaker condition, the so-called orthomodularity. Later on, it was recognized that joins in this structure need not exist provided the subspaces are not orthogonal. Hence, the resulting structure need not be a lattice but a so-called orthomodular poset, more generally an orthoposet only. For orthoposets, we introduce a binary relation $\mathrel \Delta$ and a binary operator $d(x,y)$ that are generalizations of the binary relation $\textrm{C}$ and the commutator $c(x,y)$, respectively, known for orthomodular lattices. We characterize orthomodular posets among orthogonal posets. Moreover, we describe connections between the relations $\mathrel \Delta$ and $\leftrightarrow$ (the latter was introduced by P. Pták and S. Pulmannová) and the operator $d(x,y)$. In addition, we investigate certain orthomodular posets of subsets of a finite set. In particular, we describe maximal orthomodular sublattices and Boolean subalgebras of such orthomodular posets. Finally, we study properties of $\Delta$-blocks with respect to Boolean subalgebras and distributive subposets they include.

Coreflections in Algebraic Quantum Logic

Bart Jacobs, Jorik Mandemaker

Various generalizations of Boolean algebras are being studied in algebraic quantum logic, including orthomodular lattices, orthomodular po-sets, orthoalgebras and effect algebras. This paper contains a systematic study of the structure in and between categories of such algebras. It does so via a combination of totalization (of partially defined operations) and transfer of structure via coreflections.

An orthomodular poset which does not admit a normed orthovaluation

Peter D. Meyer, Peter D. Finch

It is of relevance to studies in the logic of quantum mechanics whether or not every separable completely orthomodular poset admits a normed σ-ortho-valuation. A finite orthomodular poset is constructed which is a counter-example to this proposition.

Reconstructing an atomistic ortholattice from the poset of its Boolean sublattices

Carmen Constantin, Andreas Doering

We show that an atomic orthomodular lattice L can be reconstructed up to isomorphism from the poset B(L) of Boolean subalgebras of L. A motivation comes from quantum theory and the so-called topos approach, where one considers the poset of Boolean sublattices of L=P(H), the projection lattice of the algebra B(H) of bounded operators on Hilbert space.

Quantum categories for quantum logic

В.Л. Васюков

The paper is the contribution to quantum toposophy focusing on the abstract orthomodular structures (following Dunn-Moss-Wang terminology). Early quantum toposophical approach to "abstract quantum logic" was proposed based on the topos of functors $\mathsf{[E,Sets]}$ where $\mathsf{E}$ is a so-called orthomodular preorder category – a modification of categorically rewritten orthomodular lattice (taking into account that like any lattice it will be a finite co-complete preorder category). In the paper another kind of categorical semantics of quantum logic is discussed which is based on the modification of the topos construction itself – so called $quantos$ – which would be evaluated as a non-classical modification of topos with some extra structure allowing to take into consideration the peculiarity of negation in orthomodular quantum logic. The algebra of subobjects of quantos is not the Heyting algebra but an orthomodular lattice. Quantoses might be apprehended as an abstract reflection of Landsman's proposal of "Bohrification", i.e., the mathematical interpretation of Bohr's classical concepts by commutative $C^*$-algebras, which in turn are studied in their quantum habitat of noncommutative $C^*$-algebras – more fundamental structures than commutative $C^*$-algebras. The Bohrification suggests that topos-theoretic approach also should be modified. Since topos by its nature is an intuitionistic construction then Bohrification in abstract case should be transformed in an application of categorical structure based on an orthomodular lattice which is more general construction than Heyting algebra – orthomodular lattices are non-distributive while Heyting algebras are distributive ones. Toposes thus should be studied in their quantum habitat of "orthomodular" categories i.e. of quntoses. Also an interpretation of some well-known systems of orthomodular quantum logic in quantos of functors $\mathsf{[E,QSets]}$ is constructed where $\mathsf{QSets}$ is a quantos (not a topos) of quantum sets. The completeness of those systems in respect to the semantics proposed is proved.

Characterizations of posets via weak states

Ivan Chajda, Miroslav Kolařík, Helmut Länger

Abstract Weak states on posets are defined which are in some analogy to states on orthomodular posets used in axiomatic quantum mechanics. It is shown how certain properties of the set of weak states characterize certain properties of the underlying poset.
