Abstract

We theoretically investigate the coherent manipulation of biphoton generation via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a cavity-QED system with a single atom. The atom is driven by pumping, coupling, and driving fields, and the generation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photons are enhanced by two cavities. By solving the master equation in the steady state, we analyze the spectral brightness, as well as the degree of the auto-correlation and cross-correlation. Our results show that when the pumping and driving fields are in two-photon resonance, the dark state established between the ground and Rydberg states. efficiently enhances the controllability of the driving field over the biphoton generation and the quantum statistics. In contrast, under large two-photon detuning, the control capability of the driving field is significantly reduced. The coupling field, which directly relates to the electromagnetically induced transparency, modifies the linewidth of the biphoton, while the atom-cavity coupling strength only changes the brightness without affecting the linewidth.

Enhanced photon-pair generation under coherent control

Ke-Shuang Cui, Xiaojun Zhang, Jin‐Hui Wu

The generation of the narrowband strong-correlated biphotons via spontaneous four-wave mixing can be effectively controlled and enhanced by an additional driving field which drives a transition with its upper level being a Rydberg state. We study the properties of the noise of the generated biphotons and show that in the region of weak pumping and low atomic density, a high degree of the photon correlation is maintained with the photon-pair generation rate significantly enhanced.

Nonlocal Rydberg enhancement for four-wave-mixing biphoton generation

Hui-Min Zhao, Xiaojun Zhang, M. Artoni +2 more

Tunable Rydberg interactions in cold atoms can be used to generate strongly correlated photon pairs through a spontaneous four-wave-mixing process in which all driving fields are allowed to work on resonance. The scheme relies on electromagnetically induced transparency and an imbalanced dark state with most atoms trapped in a ground state and a weakly populated Rydberg state. We show in particular that the combination of these two effects results in negligible linear absorption and Raman gain at the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies of generated photon pairs, while the nonlocal (Rydberg) nonlinearities contribute significantly to the enhancement of photon-pair generation rates and cross correlations at very low pump strengths and optical depths.

Correlated photon-pair generation via single-atom cavity-assisted spontaneous four-wave mixing

Yuan Feng, Maohua Wang, Jin‐Hui Wu +1 more

We present a detailed study of the generation of photon pairs by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a bicavity system with a single atom inside. Cavity modes lead to larger coupling strength than that of the normally assumed thermal vacuum, and thus higher generation rates are expected. Unlike approaches that have emerged so far, this paper presents an approach based on the solution of the master equation. This method allows us to investigate the photon statistics more strictly, and we show that the choices of pumping detuning and leaking rate of the cavities significantly affect the degree of the autocorrelation, and a higher-purity heralded single photon source is possible. We also derive a concise expression for the output state and the generation rate for the extreme cases where the cavity leaking rate is much smaller or larger than the rate of spontaneous emission.

Biphoton generation enhanced by nonlocal nonlinearity via Rydberg interactions

Hui-Min Zhao, Xiaojun Zhang, M. Artoni +2 more

Strongly correlated Stokes and anti-Stokes photon pairs (biphotons) exhibiting very large generation rates and spectral brightnesses could be attained at extremely low pump powers and optical depths. This is realized via spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms with enhanced nonlocal (Rydberg) optical nonlinearities and prepared into a dark state with a large population imbalance. The scheme works with all light fields on resonance yet with negligible linear absorption and Raman gain.

Electromagnetic control and improvement of nonclassicality in a strongly coupled single-atom cavity-QED system

Yufeng Han, Chengjie Zhu, Xiangyong Huang +1 more

We present a proposal to control and improve the nonclassicality of photons in a single-atom cavity-QED system with a strong coupling strength, where the atom is directly driven by external fields. Exploring the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates of the system, we show that the dressed states can be optically manipulated by changing the control field intensity. In particular, tuning the control field frequency to be resonant with the one-photon excitation state, we show that the nonclassicality of cavity photons arising from the two-photon blockade can be actively controlled. We also show that there exists a magic control field Rabi frequency at which the two-photon blockade phenomenon can be significantly improved. The work presented here provides an optical method to control the statistical features of the cavity field that could find utility in nonclassical light generation, photon gateway operation, and exotic quantum-state generation.

Quantum nonlinear four-wave mixing with a single atom in an optical cavity

Haytham Chibani

Single atom cavity quantum electrodynamics grants access to nonclassical photon statistics, while electromagnetically induced transparency exhibits a dark state of long coherence time. The combination of the two produces a new light field via four-wave mixing that shows long-lived quantum statistics. We observe the new field in the emission from the cavity as a beat with the probe light that together with the control beam and the cavity vacuum is driving the four-wave mixing process. Moreover, the control field allows us to tune the new light field from antibunching to bunching, demonstrating our all-optical control over the photon-pair emission.
