Abstract

We introduce the Dirac Inverted Oscillator, a new exactly solvable relativistic quantum system obtained through a Hermitian modification of the generalized momentum operator in the Dirac equation. In contrast to the conventional Dirac oscillator, where the generalized momentum is intrinsically non-Hermitian while the Hamiltonian remains Hermitian, the present construction reverses these Hermiticity properties: the generalized momentum becomes Hermitian, whereas the corresponding Dirac Hamiltonian is intrinsically non-Hermitian. This inversion leads to a new class of relativistic Hamiltonians within the framework of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Starting from the stationary Dirac equation, we derive the corresponding second-order wave equation and establish the generalized symmetry properties of the model, including pseudo-Hermiticity and pseudosymmetry. We then prove that the Dirac Inverted Oscillator is exactly related to the conventional Dirac oscillator through a Hermitian but non-unitary similarity transformation generated by a dilation operator. This transformation is bijective and invertible, mapping the original non-Hermitian relativistic problem onto an equivalent Hermitian Schrodinger eigenvalue problem while preserving its complete spectral structure. The transformed Hermitian problem is solved analytically, allowing the exact relativistic spectrum and the corresponding eigenfunctions of the original non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to be determined explicitly. The present work therefore establishes an exact correspondence between a non-Hermitian relativistic Dirac system and a Hermitian Schrodinger problem, providing a new exactly solvable model and illustrating the effectiveness of Hermitian non-unitary similarity transformations for constructing analytically solvable relativistic Hamiltonians beyond the conventional Hermitian framework.

Dirac equation with position-dependent effective mass and solvable potentials in the Schrödinger equation

H. Panahi, Zahra Bakhshi

We study the one-dimensional non-Hermitian imaginary potential with a real energy spectrum in the framework of the position-dependent effective mass Dirac equation. The Dirac equation is mapped into the exactly solvable Schrödinger-like equation endowed with position-dependent effective mass that we present a new procedure to solve it. The point canonical transformation in non-relativistic quantum mechanics is applied as an algebraic method to obtain the mass function and then by using the obtained mass function, the imaginary potential can be obtained. The spinor wavefunctions for some of the obtained electrostatic potentials are given in terms of orthogonal polynomials. We also obtain the relativistic bound state spectrum for each case in terms of the bound state spectrum of the solvable potentials.

Non-inertial interpretation of the Dirac oscillator

Michele Marrocco

Abstract Non-inertial physics is seldom considered in quantum mechanics and this contrasts with the ubiquity of non-inertial reference frames. Here, we show an application to the Dirac oscillator which provides a fundamental model of relativistic quantum mechanics. The model emerges from a term linearly dependent on spatial coordinates added to the momentum of the free-particle Dirac Hamiltonian. The definition generates peculiar features (mutating vacuum energy, non-Hermitian momentum, accidental degeneracies of the spectrum, etc). We interpret these anomalies in terms of inertial effects. The demonstration is based on the decoupling of the Dirac equation from the stereographic projection that maps the 3D geometry of the dynamical problem to the complex plane. The decoupling shows that the fundamental mechanical model underpinning the Dirac oscillator reduces to the representation of the oscillator in the rotating reference frame attached to the orbital angular momentum. The resulting Coriolis-like contribution to the Hamiltonian accounts for the peculiarities of the model (mutating vacuum energy, form of the non-minimal correction to the momentum, classical intrinsic spin and gain of its quantum value, accidental degeneracies of the energy spectrum, supersymmetric potential). The suggested interpretation has an interdisciplinary character where stereographic geometry, classical physics of the Coriolis effect and quantum physics of Dirac particles contribute to the definition of one of the few exactly soluble models of relativistic quantum mechanics.

Research Paper: Solution of the Dirac Equation for Pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian and Energy-levels Crossing

Zahra Bakhshi, Fereshte Soleimani, Sare Khoshdooni

In this paper, the relativistic Dirac equation in one dimension is investigated for a particle in an external electromagnetic field, with the property of position-dependent effective mass approximation (PDEM), in the absence of vector potential. By removing the lower spinor component and combining the pair of equations, a Schrödinger-like equation is obtained for the upper spinor component. Using canonical transformations and introducing two first-order Hermitian and anti-Hermitian differential operators, a formalism for pseudo-hermitic Hamiltonians with parity-time reversal symmetry (PT) has been obtained. Comparing the equation derived from pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian with the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation leads to a general formalism for one-dimensional solvable imaginary non-Hermitian potentials with real energy spectra. Also, using this process, the complex potentials of Pöschl-Teller and Scarf II with real energy spectra in Dirac equation with PDEM approximationand PT symmetry have been investigated and their application has been expressed. For some particular parameters we will see the phenomenon of energy-levels crossing. In fact, it means that energy levels disappear from the spectrum. Also, for the mentioned examples, potential figures are drawn.

Deconstructing non-Dirac–Hermitian supersymmetric quantum systems

Pijush K Ghosh

A method to construct a non-Dirac–Hermitian supersymmetric quantum system that is isospectral with a Dirac–Hermitian Hamiltonian is presented. The general technique involves a realization of the basic canonical (anti-)commutation relations involving both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom in terms of non-Dirac–Hermitian operators which are Hermitian in a Hilbert space that is endowed with a pre-determined positive-definite metric. A pseudo-Hermitian realization of the Clifford algebra for a pre-determined positive-definite metric is used to construct supersymmetric systems with one or many degrees of freedom. It is shown that exactly solvable non-Dirac–Hermitian supersymmetric quantum systems can be constructed corresponding to each exactly solvable Dirac–Hermitian system. Examples of non-Dirac–Hermitian (i) non-relativistic Pauli Hamiltonian, (ii) super-conformal quantum system, and (iii) supersymmetric Calogero-type models admitting entirely real spectra are presented.

Position-dependent effective mass Dirac equations withPT-symmetric and non-PT-symmetric potentials

Chun‐Sheng Jia, ALVARO DE SOUZA DUTRA

We present a new procedure to construct the one-dimensional non-Hermitian imaginary potential with a real energy spectrum in the context of the position-dependent effective mass Dirac equation with the vector-coupling scheme in 1+1 dimensions. In the first example, we consider a case for which the mass distribution combines linear and inversely linear forms, the Dirac problem with a PT -symmetric potential is mapped into the exactly solvable Schrödinger-like equation problem with the isotonic oscillator by using the local scaling of the wavefunction. In the second example, we take a mass distribution with smooth step shape, the Dirac problem with a non- PT -symmetric imaginary potential is mapped into the exactly solvable Schrödinger-like equation problem with the Rosen–Morse potential. The real relativistic energy levels and corresponding wavefunctions for the bound states are obtained in terms of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics approach and the function analysis method.

Exactly solvable PT -symmetric Hamiltonian having no Hermitian counterpart

Carl M. Bender, Philip D. Mannheim

In a recent paper Bender and Mannheim showed that the unequal-frequency fourth-order derivative Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator model has a realization in which the energy eigenvalues are real and bounded below, the Hilbert-space inner product is positive definite, and time evolution is unitary. Central to that analysis was the recognition that the Hamiltonian ${H}_{\mathrm{PU}}$ of the model is $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetric. This Hamiltonian was mapped to a conventional Dirac-Hermitian Hamiltonian via a similarity transformation whose form was found exactly. The present paper explores the equal-frequency limit of the same model. It is shown that in this limit the similarity transform that was used for the unequal-frequency case becomes singular and that ${H}_{\mathrm{PU}}$ becomes a Jordan-block operator, which is nondiagonalizable and has fewer energy eigenstates than eigenvalues. Such a Hamiltonian has no Hermitian counterpart. Thus, the equal-frequency $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ theory emerges as a distinct realization of quantum mechanics. The quantum mechanics associated with this Jordan-block Hamiltonian can be treated exactly. It is shown that the Hilbert space is complete with a set of nonstationary solutions to the Schr\"odinger equation replacing the missing stationary ones. These nonstationary states are needed to establish that the Jordan-block Hamiltonian of the equal-frequency Pais-Uhlenbeck model generates unitary time evolution.
