Abstract

We study a disorder-free variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with dissipation within the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad formalism. By utilizing the integrability of the clean SYK model, we derive an exact solution in a spectrum-resolved form, i.e., the eigenvalues and corresponding projection superoperators of the Liouvillian for arbitrary system size $N$. We determine the scaling of the gap that governs the long-time decay of the two-point correlation functions. Importantly, the gap does not vanish in the dissipationless limit when the thermodynamic limit is taken first, despite the integrability of the model. This phenomenon, known as anomalous relaxation, suggests a possible connection with chaotic dynamics and quantum Ruelle-Pollicott resonances. We also find several spectral features, such as transitions in the Liouvillian spectrum from complex to real eigenvalues with increasing dissipation strength, as well as the convergence of the dissipative form factor to the spectral form factor in the dissipationless limit. These findings indicate that the present model offers a useful platform for exploring nontrivial open dynamics of many-body quantum systems.

Disorder-free Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models: Integrability and a precursor of chaos

Soshun Ozaki, Hosho Katsura

We introduce two disorder-free variants of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, demonstrate their integrability, and study their static and dynamical properties. Unlike diagrammatic techniques, the integrability of these models allows us to obtain dynamical correlation functions even when the number of Majorana fermions is finite. From the solutions, we find that out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in these models exhibit exponential growth at early times, resembling that of many-body quantum chaotic systems, such as those with disorder or external kick terms, despite their large N behavior differing from that of typical chaotic systems. Conversely, our analysis shows no evidence of random-matrix behavior in level spacing statistics or the spectral form factor. Our findings illustrate that the clean versions of the SYK models represent simple but nontrivial examples of disorder-free quantum many-body systems displaying chaoslike behavior of OTOCs.

Role of exceptional points in the dynamics of the Lindblad Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Jie Zheng, J. Dukelsky, Rafael A. Molina +1 more

The out of equilibrium dynamics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model (SYK), comprising $N$ Majoranas with random all-to-all four-body interactions, minimally coupled to a Markovian bath modeled by the Lindblad formalism, displays intriguing nontrivial features. In particular, the decay rate towards the steady state is a non-monotonic function of the bath coupling $μ$, and an analogue of the Loschmidt echo for dissipative quantum systems undergoes a first order dynamical phase transitions that eventually becomes a crossover for sufficiently large $μ$. We provide evidence that these features have their origin in the presence of exceptional points in the purely real eigenvalues of the SYK Liouvillian closest to the zero eigenvalue associated with the steady state. An analytic calculation at small $N$, supported by numerical results for larger $N$, reveals that the value of $μ\sim 0.1$ at which the exceptional point corresponding to the longest living modes occurs is close to a local maximum of the decay rate. This value marks the start of a region of anomalous equilibration where the relaxation rate diminishes as the coupling to the bath becomes stronger. Moreover, the mentioned change from transition to crossover in the Loschmidt echo occurs at a larger $μ\sim 0.3$ corresponding with a proliferation of exceptional points in the low energy limit of the Liouvillian spectrum. We expect these features to be generic in the approach to equilibrium in quantum strongly interacting many-body Liouvillians.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Lindbladians

Kohei Kawabata, Anish Kulkarni, Jiachen Li +2 more

We study the open quantum dynamics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model described by the Lindblad master equation, where the SYK model is coupled to Markovian reservoirs with jump operators that are either linear or quadratic in the Majorana fermion operators. Of particular interest for us is the time evolution of the dissipative form factor, which quantifies the average overlap between the initial and time-evolved density matrices as an open quantum generalization of the Loschmidt echo. We find that the dissipative form factor exhibits dynamical quantum phase transitions. We analytically demonstrate a discontinuous dynamical phase transition in the limit of a large number of fermion flavors, which is formally akin to the thermal phase transition in the two-coupled SYK model between the black-hole and wormhole phases. We also find continuous dynamical phase transitions that do not have counterparts in the two-coupled SYK model. While the phase transitions are sharp in the limit of a large number of fermion flavors, their qualitative signatures are present even for a finite number of fermion flavors, as we show numerically.

Many-body spectral transitions through the lens of a variable-range quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Andrea Legramandi, Soumik Bandyopadhyay, Philipp Hauke

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a cornerstone in the study of quantum chaos and holographic quantum matter. Real-world implementations, however, deviate from the idealized all-to-all connectivity, raising questions about the robustness of its chaotic properties. In this work, we investigate a quadratic SYK model with distance-dependent interactions governed by a power-law decay. By analytically and numerically studying the spectral form factor (SFF), we uncover how transitions present in the single-particle limit carry over to the many-body system. Nontrivial cancellations in the one-loop contributions lead to a robustness of the SFF under a considerable reduction of the interaction range. Further suppression leads to a breakdown of perturbation theory around the infinite-range path-integral saddle and the appearance of spectral regimes, marked by a higher dip and the emergence of a secondary plateau. Our results highlight the interplay between single-particle criticality and many-body dynamics, offering insights into the quantum chaos-to-localization transition and its reflection in spectral statistics.

Q -Laguerre spectral density and quantum chaos in the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Lucas Sá, Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a

We study the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (WSYK) model consisting of two $\stackrel{^}{q}$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with general complex couplings, one the Hermitian conjugate of the other, living in off-diagonal blocks of a larger WSYK Hamiltonian. The spectrum is positive with a hard edge at zero energy. We employ diagrammatic and combinatorial techniques to compute analytically the low-order moments of the Hamiltonian. In the limit of large number $N$ of Majoranas, we have found striking similarities with the moments of the weight function of the Al-Salam-Chihara $Q$-Laguerre polynomials. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=3$, 4, the $Q$-Laguerre prediction, with $Q=Q(\stackrel{^}{q},N)$ also computed analytically, agrees well with exact diagonalization results for $30<N\ensuremath{\le}34$ while we observe some deviations for $\stackrel{^}{q}=2$. The most salient feature of the spectral density is that, for odd $\stackrel{^}{q}$, low-energy excitations grow as a stretched exponential, with a functional form different from that of the supersymmetric SYK model. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=4$, a detailed analysis of level statistics reveals quantum chaotic dynamics even for time scales substantially shorter than the Heisenberg time. More specifically, the spacing ratios in the bulk of the spectrum and the microscopic spectral density and the number variance close to the hard edge are very well approximated by that of an ensemble of random matrices that, depending on $N$, belong to the chiral or superconducting universality classes. In particular, we report the first realization of level statistics belonging to the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble universality class, which completes the tenfold-way classification in the SYK model.

Chaotic-Integrable Transition in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, Bruno Loureiro, Aurelio Romero-Bermúdez +1 more

Quantum chaos is one of the distinctive features of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, N Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimensions with infinite-range two-body interactions, which is attracting a lot of interest as a toy model for holography. Here we show analytically and numerically that a generalized SYK model with an additional one-body infinite-range random interaction, which is a relevant perturbation in the infrared, is still quantum chaotic and retains most of its holographic features for a fixed value of the perturbation and sufficiently high temperature. However, a chaotic-integrable transition, characterized by the vanishing of the Lyapunov exponent and spectral correlations given by Poisson statistics, occurs at a temperature that depends on the strength of the perturbation. We speculate about the gravity dual of this transition.
