Abstract

We study quantum fluctuations in a quartet superfluid (QSF) of two-dimensional (2D) fermion mixtures with mass imbalance. Here QSF is a high-order superfluid that corresponds to the condensation of ($1+3$) clusters, each consisting of a light fermion and three heavy ones. By incorporating the Gaussian fluctuations respecting dominant four-body correlations in this system, our theory successfully recovers the leading universal logarithmic contribution to the 2D equation of state in the deep binding regime, thereby offering a correct physical picture of quartet clusters behaving as composite bosons. By extending the Gaussian fluctuation theory from pairing to quartet superfluids, our results shed light on quantum fluctuations in general fermion superfluids with arbitrarily high-order correlations.

Quartet Superfluid in Two-Dimensional Mass-Imbalanced Fermi Mixtures

Ruijin Liu, Wei Wang, Xiaoling Cui

Quartet superfluid (QSF) is a distinct type of fermion superfluidity that exhibits high-order correlation beyond the conventional BCS pairing paradigm. In this Letter, we report the emergent QSF in 2D mass-imbalanced Fermi mixtures with two-body contact interactions. This is facilitated by the formation of a quartet bound state in vacuum that consists of a light atom and three heavy fermions. For an optimized heavy-light number ratio 3:1, we identify QSF as the ground state in a considerable parameter regime of mass imbalance and 2D coupling strength. Its unique high-order correlation can be manifested in the momentum-space crystallization of a pairing field and density distribution of heavy fermions. Our results can be readily detected in Fermi-Fermi mixtures nowadays realized in cold atoms laboratories, and meanwhile shed light on exotic superfluidity in a broad context of mass-imbalanced fermion mixtures.

Composite bosons in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover from Gaussian fluctuations

Luca Salasnich, Flavio Toigo

We study Gaussian fluctuations of the zero-temperature attractive Fermi gas in the two-dimensional (2D) BCS-BEC crossover showing that they are crucial to get a reliable equation of state in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime of composite bosons, bound states of fermionic pairs. A low-momentum expansion up to the fourth order of the quadratic action of the fluctuating pairing field gives an ultraviolent divergent contribution of the Gaussian fluctuations to the grand potential. Performing dimensional regularization we evaluate the effective coupling constant in the beyond-mean-field grand potential. Remarkably, in the BEC regime our grand potential gives exactly the Popov's equation of state of 2D interacting bosons, and allows us to identify the scattering length ${a}_{B}$ of the interaction between composite bosons as ${a}_{B}={a}_{F}/({2}^{1/2}{e}^{1/4})=0.551...{a}_{F}$, with ${a}_{F}$ is the scattering length of fermions. Remarkably, the value from our analytical relationship between the two scattering lengths is in full agreement with that obtained by recent Monte Carlo calculations.

Quantum fluctuations in the BCS-BEC crossover of two-dimensional Fermi gases

Lianyi He, Hai‐Feng Lü, Gaoqing Cao +2 more

We present a theoretical study of the ground state of the BCS-BEC crossover in dilute two-dimensional Fermi gases. While the mean-field theory provides a simple and analytical equation of state, the pressure is equal to that of a noninteracting Fermi gas in the entire BCS-BEC crossover, which is not consistent with the features of a weakly interacting Bose condensate in the BEC limit and a weakly interacting Fermi liquid in the BCS limit. The inadequacy of the two-dimensional mean-field theory indicates that the quantum fluctuations are much more pronounced than those in three dimensions. In this work, we show that the inclusion of the Gaussian quantum fluctuations naturally recovers the above features in both the BEC and the BCS limits. In the BEC limit, the missing logarithmic dependence on the boson chemical potential is recovered by the quantum fluctuations. Near the quantum phase transition from the vacuum to the BEC phase, we compare our equation of state with the known grand canonical equation of state of two-dimensional Bose gases and determine the ratio of the composite boson scattering length ${a}_{B}$ to the fermion scattering length ${a}_{2\mathrm{D}}$. We find ${a}_{B}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.56{a}_{2\mathrm{D}}$, in good agreement with the exact four-body calculation. We compare our equation of state in the BCS-BEC crossover with recent results from the quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the experimental measurements and find good agreements.

Comparative study of quartet superfluid state: Quartet Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and generalized Nambu-Gor'kov formalism

Yixin Guo, Hiroyuki Tajima, Haozhao Liang

We theoretically investigate a quartet superfluid state in fermionic matter by using the quartet Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) variational theory and the Green's function method. We demonstrate that the quartet BCS theory with the multiple-infinite-product ansatz successfully reproduces an exact four-body result in a one-dimensional four-component Fermi gas at the dilute limit, in contrast to the single-infinite-product ansatz. To see the validity of the quartet BCS state, we derive the self-consistent equation for the quartet superfluid order parameter within the generalized imaginary-time Nambu-Gor'kov formalism, which is found to be consistent with the quartet BCS variational equation. Moreover, by numerically computing the momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function in a one-dimensional system, we discuss how the single-particle spectra evolve with increasing the strength of the four-body cluster formation. We show that a coherent BCS-like quasiparticle branch on the weak-coupling side evolves into a strongly damped, continuum-dominated spectrum in the strong-coupling side, while nonzero quartet superfluid order parameter persists throughout the crossover regime. Our results would be useful for understanding beyond-BCS pairing effects and four-body cluster formations in fermionic systems in an interdisciplinary way.

Gaussian fluctuations in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover: finite temperature properties

Giacomo Bighin, Luca Salasnich

The role of fluctuations is enhanced in lower dimensionality systems: in a two dimensions offdiagonal long-range order is destroyed by the fluctuations at any finite temperature, drastically modifying the critical properties with respect to the three-dimensional counterpart.Recently two-dimensional systems of interacting fermions have been the subject of Montecarlo studies and experimental investigations, in particular an ultracold gas of attractive fermions with a widely tunable interaction due to a Feshbach resonance has been realized and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition has been observed. The present work deals with the theoretical description of an ultracold Fermi gas: we discuss the role of Gaussian fluctuations of the order parameter in the equation of state, in particular we take into account the first sound velocity, showing that the inclusion of order parameter fluctuations is needed in order to get the correct composite-boson limit in the strong-coupling regime. The theory is also compared with experimental data. Finally we focus on the superfluid density in the weak-coupling, intermediate and strong-coupling regimes at finite temperature, through which the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical temperature is obtained.

Quantum Droplets in a Mixture of Bose–Fermi Superfluids

Jingbo B. Wang, Jian-Song Pan, Xiaoling Cui +1 more

We study the formation of quantum droplets in the mixture of a single-component Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), and a two-species Fermi superfluid across a wide Feshbach resonance. With repulsive boson-boson and attractive boson-fermion interactions, we show that quantum droplets can be stabilized by attractive fermion-fermion interactions on the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) side of the resonance, and can also exist in the deep BEC regime under weak boson-fermion interactions. We map out the phase diagram for stable droplets with respect to the boson-boson and boson-fermion interactions, and discuss the role of different types of quantum fluctuations in the relevant regions of the BCS-BEC crossover. Our work reveals the impact of fermion pairing on the formation of quantum droplets in Bose–Fermi mixtures, and provides a useful guide for future experiments.
