Abstract

We present a complete analysis of the glass transition in the self-overlap-corrected Sherrington\--Kirkpatrick (SK) model in a transverse magnetic field, also referred to as the quantum SK (QSK) model. In particular, we determine the phase boundary separating the glassy and paramagnetic phases explicitly. Such an analytic characterization of the glass transition is not expected for the true QSK and even unknown for most vector glass models. Despite being of independent interest, the analysis of the self-overlap corrected QSK model serves as important ingredient in the characterization of paramagnetic behavior in the real QSK. The proof is based on a simplified Parisi variational principle for the quantum pressure, which only involves classical Parisi order parameters. As part of the proof, we also analyze the pressure of the self-overlap-constrained quantum SK model and its Parisi description, as well as the pressure of generalized quantum Hopfield models.

Interpolations for a quantum Parisi formula in transverse field mean-field spin glass models

Chigak Itoi, Fujiwara, K., Yasuhiro Sakamoto

A quantum Parisi formula for the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model is proven with an elementary mathematical method. First, a self-overlap corrected quantum model of the transverse field SK model is represented in terms of the Hamiltonian with annealed random interactions. The interpolation given by Guerra and Toninelli is extended to the self-overlap corrected quantum model. It is proven that the infinite-volume limit of the free energy density exists in the operator formalism. Next, another interpolation developed by Guerra and Talagrand is applied to obtain a finite step replica-symmetry breaking (RSB) bound on the free energy density in the transverse field SK model. The interpolation enables us to show that the deviation of the RSB solution from the exact solution vanishes in the self-overlap corrected quantum model in a functional representation of the quantum spin operators. Finally, the corrected terms are removed by the Hopf-Lax formula for a nonlinear partial differential equation to show the quantum Parisi formula for the original transverse field SK model. The formula is extended to that for the transverse field mean-field $p$-spin glass model.

Stability of the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model

A. P. Young

I study in detail the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, i.e., the infinite-range Ising spin glass in a transverse field, by solving numerically the effective one-dimensional model that the quantum SK model can be mapped to in the thermodynamic limit. I find that the replica symmetric solution is unstable down to zero temperature, in contrast to some previous claims, and so there is not only a line of transitions in the (longitudinal) field-temperature plane (the de Almeida-Thouless, AT, line) where replica symmetry is broken, but also a quantum de Almeida-Thouless (QuAT) line in the transverse field-longitudinal field plane at T=0. If the QuAT line also occurs in models with short-range interactions its presence might affect the performance of quantum annealers when solving spin glass-type problems with a bias (i.e., magnetic field).

Free energy of the quantum Sherrington–Kirkpatrick spin-glass model with transverse field

Arka Adhikari, Christian Brennecke

We consider the quantum Sherrington–Kirkpatrick (SK) spin-glass model with a transverse field and provide a formula for its free energy in the thermodynamic limit, valid for all inverse temperatures β > 0. To characterize the free energy, we use the path integral representation of the partition function and approximate the model by a sequence of finite-dimensional vector-spin glasses with Rd-valued spins. This enables us to use the results of Panchenko who generalized [Ann. Probab. 46(2), 829–864 (2018); ibid, 46(2), 865–896 (2018)] the Parisi formula to classical vector-spin glasses. As a consequence, we can express the thermodynamic limit of the free energy of the quantum SK model as the d → ∞ limit of the free energies of the d-dimensional approximations of the model.

Many-body localization-delocalization transition in the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

Sudip Mukherjee, Sabyasachi Nag, Arti Garg

We analyze the many-body localization- (MBL) to-delocalization transition in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model of Ising spin glass in the presence of a transverse field $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$. Based on energy-resolved analysis, which is of relevance for a closed quantum system, we show that the quantum SK model has many-body mobility edges separating the MBL phase, which is nonergodic and nonthermal, from the delocalized phase, which is ergodic and thermal. The range of the delocalized regime increases with an increase in the strength of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, and eventually for $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ larger than ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\text{CP}}$ the entire many-body spectrum is delocalized. We show that the Renyi entropy is almost independent of the system size in the MBL phase while the delocalized phase shows extensive Renyi entropy. We further obtain the spin-glass transition curve in the energy density $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ plane from the collapse of the eigenstate spin susceptibility. We demonstrate that in most of the parameter regime, the spin-glass transition occurs close to the MBL transition, indicating that the spin-glass phase is nonergodic and nonthermal while the paramagnetic phase is delocalized and thermal.

Complete replica solution for the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method

Annamária Kiss, Gergely Zaránd, Izabella Lovas

We construct a complete numerically exact solution of a mean-field quantum spin glass model---the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model---by implementing a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method in the presence of full replica symmetry breaking. We extract the full numerically exact phase diagram, displaying a glassy phase with continuous replica symmetry breaking at small transverse fields and low temperatures. A paramagnetic phase emerges once thermal and quantum fluctuations melt the spin glass. We characterize both phases by extracting the order parameter as well as the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The static susceptibility shows a plateau in the glassy phase, but it remains smooth across the phase boundary. For the imaginary part of the dynamical susceptibility, we find an Ohmic, i.e., linear in $\ensuremath{\omega}$, scaling for small frequencies $\ensuremath{\omega}$, with a slope independent of the transverse field. These results compare qualitatively well with ac susceptibility measurements on a dipole-coupled three-dimensional Ising magnet---the ${\mathrm{LiHo}}_{x}{\mathrm{Y}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{F}}_{4}$ compound---in a transverse magnetic field. Our work provides a general framework for the exact numerical solution of mean-field quantum glass models, and it constitutes an important step towards understanding glassiness in realistic systems.

Spin Glasses in a Field Show a Phase Transition Varying the Distance among Real Replicas (And How to Exploit It to Find the Critical Line in a Field)

Maddalena Dilucca, Luca Leuzzi, Giorgio Parisi A +2 more

We discuss a phase transition in spin glass models that have been rarely considered in the past, namely, the phase transition that may take place when two real replicas are forced to be at a larger distance (i.e., at a smaller overlap) than the typical one. In the first part of the work, by solving analytically the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in a field close to its critical point, we show that, even in a paramagnetic phase, the forcing of two real replicas to an overlap small enough leads the model to a phase transition where the symmetry between replicas is spontaneously broken. More importantly, this phase transition is related to the de Almeida-Thouless (dAT) critical line. In the second part of the work, we exploit the phase transition in the overlap between two real replicas to identify the critical line in a field in finite dimensional spin glasses. This is a notoriously difficult computational problem, because of considerable finite size corrections. We introduce a new method of analysis of Monte Carlo data for disordered systems, where the overlap between two real replicas is used as a conditioning variate. We apply this analysis to equilibrium measurements collected in the paramagnetic phase in a field, h > 0 and T c ( h ) < T < T c ( h = 0 ) , of the d = 1 spin glass model with long range interactions decaying fast enough to be outside the regime of validity of the mean field theory. We thus provide very reliable estimates for the thermodynamic critical temperature in a field.
