Abstract

We construct a complete numerically exact solution of a mean-field quantum spin glass model---the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model---by implementing a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method in the presence of full replica symmetry breaking. We extract the full numerically exact phase diagram, displaying a glassy phase with continuous replica symmetry breaking at small transverse fields and low temperatures. A paramagnetic phase emerges once thermal and quantum fluctuations melt the spin glass. We characterize both phases by extracting the order parameter as well as the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The static susceptibility shows a plateau in the glassy phase, but it remains smooth across the phase boundary. For the imaginary part of the dynamical susceptibility, we find an Ohmic, i.e., linear in $\ensuremath{\omega}$, scaling for small frequencies $\ensuremath{\omega}$, with a slope independent of the transverse field. These results compare qualitatively well with ac susceptibility measurements on a dipole-coupled three-dimensional Ising magnet---the ${\mathrm{LiHo}}_{x}{\mathrm{Y}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{F}}_{4}$ compound---in a transverse magnetic field. Our work provides a general framework for the exact numerical solution of mean-field quantum glass models, and it constitutes an important step towards understanding glassiness in realistic systems.

Existence of de Almeida-Thouless-type instability in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

Chigak Itoi, Fujiwara, K., Yasuhiro Sakamoto

The interpolation method for mean field spin glass models developed by Guerra and Talagrand is extended to a quantum mean field spin glass model. This extension enables us to obtain both replica-symmetric (RS) and one step replica-symmetry breaking (1RSB) solutions of the free energy density in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. It is shown that the RS solution is exact in the paramagnetic phase. We provide a sufficient condition on coupling constants where the 1RSB solution gives better bound than the RS one. This condition reduced to physical quantities in disordered single spin systems allows a simple computer-assisted proof for the existence of the de Almeida-Thouless-type instability.

Exact Numerical Solution of the Fully Connected Classical and Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

Nikita Kavokine, Markus Müller, Antoine Georges +1 more

We present the mean field solution of the quantum and classical Heisenberg spin glasses, using the combination of a high precision numerical solution of the Parisi full replica symmetry breaking equations and a continuous time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. We characterize the spin glass order and its low-energy excitations down to zero temperature. The Heisenberg spin glass has a rougher energy landscape than its Ising analog, and exhibits a very slow temperature evolution of its dynamical properties. We extend our analysis to the doped, metallic Heisenberg spin glass, which displays unexpectedly slow spin dynamics, reflecting the proximity to the melting quantum critical point and its associated Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Planckian dynamics.

Spin-glass phase transition and behavior of nonlinear susceptibility in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model with random fields

C.V. Morais, Fábio M. Zimmer, Matheus J. Lazo +2 more

The behavior of the nonlinear susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}$ and its relation to the spin-glass transition temperature ${T}_{f}$ in the presence of random fields are investigated. To accomplish this task, the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model is studied through the replica formalism, within a one-step replica-symmetry-breaking procedure. In addition, the dependence of the Almeida-Thouless eigenvalue ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{AT}}$ (replicon) on the random fields is analyzed. Particularly, in the absence of random fields, the temperature ${T}_{f}$ can be traced by a divergence in the spin-glass susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{SG}}$, which presents a term inversely proportional to the replicon ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{AT}}$. As a result of a relation between ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{SG}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}$, the latter also presents a divergence at ${T}_{f}$, which comes as a direct consequence of ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{AT}}=0$ at ${T}_{f}$. However, our results show that, in the presence of random fields, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}$ presents a rounded maximum at a temperature ${T}^{*}$ which does not coincide with the spin-glass transition temperature ${T}_{f}$ (i.e., ${T}^{*}>{T}_{f}$ for a given applied random field). Thus, the maximum value of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}$ at ${T}^{*}$ reflects the effects of the random fields in the paramagnetic phase instead of the nontrivial ergodicity breaking associated with the spin-glass phase transition. It is also shown that ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}$ still maintains a dependence on the replicon ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{AT}}$, although in a more complicated way as compared with the case without random fields. These results are discussed in view of recent observations in the ${\mathrm{LiHo}}_{x}{\mathrm{Y}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{F}}_{4}$ compound.

Stability of the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model

A. P. Young

I study in detail the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, i.e., the infinite-range Ising spin glass in a transverse field, by solving numerically the effective one-dimensional model that the quantum SK model can be mapped to in the thermodynamic limit. I find that the replica symmetric solution is unstable down to zero temperature, in contrast to some previous claims, and so there is not only a line of transitions in the (longitudinal) field-temperature plane (the de Almeida-Thouless, AT, line) where replica symmetry is broken, but also a quantum de Almeida-Thouless (QuAT) line in the transverse field-longitudinal field plane at T=0. If the QuAT line also occurs in models with short-range interactions its presence might affect the performance of quantum annealers when solving spin glass-type problems with a bias (i.e., magnetic field).

Quantum phase transition in a disordered long-range transverse Ising antiferromagnet

Anjan Kumar Chandra, Jun‐ichi Inoue, Bikas K. Chakrabarti

We consider a long-range Ising antiferromagnet put in a transverse field (LRTIAF) with disorder. We have obtained the phase diagrams for both the classical and quantum cases. For the pure case applying quantum Monte Carlo method, we study the variation in order parameter (spin correlation in the Trotter direction), susceptibility, and average energy of the system for various values of the transverse field at different temperatures. The antiferromagnetic order is seen to get immediately broken as soon as the thermal or quantum fluctuations are added. We discuss generally the phase diagram for the same LRTIAF model with perturbative Sherrington-Kirkpatrick-type disorder. We find that while the antiferromagnetic order is immediately broken as one adds an infinitesimal transverse field or thermal fluctuation to the pure LRTIAF system, an infinitesimal SK spin-glass disorder is enough to induce a stable glass order in the LRTIAF. This glass order eventually gets destroyed as the thermal or quantum fluctuations are increased beyond their threshold values and the transition to paramagnetic phase occurs. Analytical studies for the phase transitions are discussed in details in each case. These transitions have been confirmed by applying classical and quantum Monte Carlo methods. We show here that the disordered LRTIAF has a surrogate incubation property of the SK spin glass phase.

Quantum effects in rotationally invariant spin glass models

Yoshinori Hara, Yoshiyuki Kabashima

This study investigates the quantum effects in transverse-field Ising spin glass models with rotationally invariant random interactions. The primary aim is to evaluate the validity of a quasistatic approach that captures the imaginary-time dependence of the order parameters beyond the conventional static approximation. Using the replica method combined with the Suzuki-Trotter decomposition, we established a stability condition for the replica symmetric solution, which is analogous to the de Almeida-Thouless criterion. Numerical analysis of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model estimates a value of the critical transverse field, Γ_{c}, which is consistent with previous Monte Carlo-based estimations. For the Hopfield model, it provides an estimate of Γ_{c}, which has not been previously evaluated. For the random orthogonal model, our analysis suggests that quantum effects alter the random first-order transition scenario in the low-temperature limit. This study supports a quasistatic treatment for analyzing quantum spin glasses and may offer useful insights into the analysis of quantum optimization algorithms.
