Abstract

We study how ferromagnetism breaks down in the spin-$\tfrac12$ nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on the maple-leaf lattice with ferromagnetic $J_t,J_d$ and antiferromagnetic $J_h$, motivated by the mixed ferro-antiferromagnetic interactions in Na$_2$Mn$_3$O$_7$. Exact diagonalization shows that the ferromagnetic boundary does not feature a zero-field spin-nematic phase on the clusters studied here, but an extended regime of incommensurate spin-density-wave correlations with continuously evolving ordering vector. The phase diagram also contains collinear Néel, canted $120^\circ$, and hexagonal-singlet regimes, separated by regions that remain difficult to classify from exact diagonalization alone. Variational tests of fully symmetric Gutzwiller-projected Abrikosov-fermion U(1) and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ states find no competitive spin-liquid description of the interior unresolved regions. By contrast, on the ruby-lattice boundary we identify a point between the collinear Néel and hexagonal-singlet phases where a projected $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Ansatz reproduces the finite-size energy and spin correlations with good accuracy.

Unconventional orders in the maple-leaf ferro-antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

Lasse Gresista, Dominik Kiese, Simon Trebst +1 more

Motivated by the search for unconventional orders in frustrated quantum magnets, we present a multi-method investigation into the nature of the quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the maple-leaf lattice with three symmetry-inequivalent nearest-neighbor interactions. It has been argued that the parameter regime with antiferromagnetic couplings on hexagons $J_h$ and ferromagnetic couplings on triangles $J_t$ and dimer $J_d$ bonds, is potentially host to a cornucopia of emergent phases with unconventional orders. Our analysis indeed identifies an extended region where any conventional dipolar magnetic order is absent. A hexagonal singlet state is found in the region around $J_{d}=J_{t}=0$, while a dimerized hexagonal singlet order of a lattice nematic character appears proximate to the phase boundary with the c$120^\circ$ antiferromagnetic order. Interestingly, upon traversing the bulk of the paramagnetic (PM) region, we find a variety of distinct correlation profiles, which are qualitatively different from those of the hexagonal singlet and dimerized hexagonal singlet orders but feature no appreciable spin-nematic response, while the boundary with the ferromagnetic phase shows evidence of spin-nematic order. This PM region is thus likely host to an ensemble of nonmagnetic phases which could putatively include quantum spin liquids. Our phase diagram is built from a complementary application of state-of-the-art implementations of the cluster mean-field and pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group approaches, together with an unconstrained Luttinger-Tisza treatment of the model providing insights from the semi-classical limit.

Competing Paramagnetic Phases in the Maple-Leaf Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Paul L. Ebert, Yasir Iqbal, Alexander Wietek

We establish a remarkably rich ground state phase diagram in the maple-leaf lattice spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet as a function of the three symmetry-inequivalent nearest-neighbor bonds using exact diagonalization and tower-of-states analysis on clusters up to $N=36$ sites. Besides a hexagonal plaquette state, a star-shaped valence bond solid state is discovered in close vicinity to the (canted) $120^\circ$ magnetic phase, strongly reminiscent of a de-confined critical point or Dirac spin liquid scenario on the triangular lattice antiferromagnets. Moreover, an exact dimer product-state is observed next to a collinear Néel-state, similar to the Shastry-Sutherland model. All identified phases compete in a parameter regime close to the isotropic point, providing a promising region for spin liquids to emerge. By analyzing Gutzwiller-projected wave-functions we identify a sliver of parameter regime where a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid Ansatz is in astonishing agreement with the exact $N=36$ ground state. This rich competition of paramagnetic phases demonstrates that the maple-leaf antiferromagnet is a promising platform for exotic states of matter and quantum critical phenomena.

An extended non-magnetic phase in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet from the ruby to the maple-leaf lattice

Philipp Schmoll, Jan Naumann, Weerda, Erik Lennart +2 more

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional ruby and maple-leaf lattices provides a stringent test case for frustrated quantum magnetism, where semiclassical magnetic order competes closely with quantum-paramagnetic states. We study the generalized maple-leaf model along the axis interpolating between the isotropic ruby lattice and the isotropic maple-leaf lattice, using two independent variational infinite projected entangled-pair state ansätze: one defined on the mapped square lattice and one directly on the native triangular lattice. Our lowest-energy variational states show no magnetic order throughout the region connecting the two isotropic limits, and the local bond correlations recover the $120^\circ$ lattice rotation symmetry without imposing it explicitly. Magnetic-field simulations at the two endpoints further indicate a finite zero-magnetization plateau in both cases, with a gradual onset of magnetization on the ruby lattice and a sharper onset on the maple-leaf lattice. These results establish a broad gapped non-magnetic regime in a minimal nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on lattices of direct relevance to both frustrated quantum magnets and programmable ruby-lattice simulators.

Candidate quantum spin liquids on the maple-leaf lattice

Jonas Sonnenschein, Atanu Maity, Chunxiao Liu +3 more

Motivated by recent numerical studies reporting putative quantum paramagnetic behavior in spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg models on the maple-leaf lattice, we classify Abrikosov fermion mean-field Ans\"atze of fully symmetric U(1) and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ quantum spin liquids within the framework of projective symmetry groups. We obtain a total of $17\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\text{U}(1)$ and $12\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ algebraic PSGs, and, upon restricting their realization via mean-field Ans\"atze with nearest-neighbor amplitudes (relevant to the studied models), only 12 U(1) and 8 ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ distinct phases are obtained. We present both singlet and triplet fields for all Ans\"atze up to third nearest-neighbor bonds and discuss their spinon dispersions as well as their dynamical spin structure factors. We further assess the effects of Gutzwiller projection on the equal-time spin structure factors.

Tensor-network study of the ground state of maple-leaf Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Samuel Nyckees, Pratyay Ghosh, Frédéric Mila

We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on the maple-leaf lattice using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS) combined with a corner transfer matrix renormalization group scheme adapted to $C_3$-symmetric lattices. Focusing on the fully antiferromagnetic $J$-$J_d$ model with $J_h = J_t := J$, we map out the ground-state phase diagram as a function of the dimer coupling $J_d$. Our results show that the system hosts only two phases: a magnetically ordered canted-$120^\circ$ phase and an exact dimer singlet product phase. We identify a first-order transition between these two phases at $J_d/J \approx 1.45$. Within the magnetically ordered phase, we observe small but finite magnetic moments. We also resolve the quantum renormalization of the canting angle, which deviates from the classical prediction over almost the entire magnetically ordered phase.

Abstract We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-1/2 nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on the maple-leaf lattice using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS) combined with a corner transfer matrix renormalization group scheme adapted to C 3 -symmetric lattices. Focusing on the fully antiferromagnetic J – J d model with J h = J t ≔ J , we map out the ground-state phase diagram as a function of the dimer coupling J d . Our results show that the system hosts only two phases: a magnetically ordered canted-120° phase and an exact dimer singlet product phase. We identify a first-order transition between these two phases at J d / J ≈ 1.45. Within the magnetically ordered phase, we observe small but finite magnetic moments. We also resolve the quantum renormalization of the canting angle, which deviates from the classical prediction over almost the entire magnetically ordered phase.
