We perform a projective symmetry group (PSG) classification of symmetric quantum spin liquids with different gauge groups on the square-octagon lattice. Employing the Abrikosov fermion representation for spin
21, we obtain
32SU(2),1808U(1), and
384Z2 algebraic PSGs. Constraining ourselves to mean-field parton ans\"atze with short-range amplitudes, the classification reduces to a limited number, with 4
SU(2), 24
U(1), and 36
Z2, distinct phases. We discuss their ground-state properties and spinon dispersions within a self-consistent treatment of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with frustrating couplings.
The ruby lattice has been the subject of much interest recently due its realization in Rydberg atom arrays, where its rich variety of frustrated interactions gives rise to topologically ordered quantum spin liquids. Similarly, numerical studies of ruby-lattice spin models, with both isotropic and anisotropic interactions, have provided evidence of gapped and gapless spin-liquid ground states with different low-energy gauge structures. Motivated by these findings, we perform a projective symmetry group (PSG) classification of U(1) and
Z2 fermionic spinon mean-field theories$\unicode{x2014}$respecting space-group and time-reversal symmetries$\unicode{x2014}$for
S=1/2 spins. We obtain a total of 50 U(1) and 64
Z2 PSGs, and upon restricting their realization via mean-field
Ansa¨tze with up to second-nearest-neighbor singlet amplitudes (relevant to the models studied here), only 8 U(1) and 18
Z2 distinct states are obtained. We present the singlet fields for all
Ansa¨tze up to third-nearest-neighboring bonds and discuss their spinon dispersions as well as their dynamical spin structure factors. Building on this information, we also obtain the phase diagram of the Heisenberg model in the presence of first (
J1), second (
J1′), and third (
J2) neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings within a self-consistent mean-field approximation.
Wen's projective symmetry group (PSG), introduced a quarter of a century ago, reduced the classification of symmetric quantum spin liquids to an algebraic problem and has guided the study of spin-
1/2 models and materials ever since. Many current candidate materials and quantum simulators, however, have spin-
1 or larger moments, and no comparable classification exists for them. We formulate the PSG for fermionic partons of arbitrary spin
S. Integer and half-odd-integer spins already differ in their gauge structure. Half-odd-integer spins give the familiar
SU(2),
U(1), and
Z2 invariant gauge groups, while integer spins give a different hierarchy that includes
U(1)⋊Z2 and
Z2×Z2; the latter has no spin-
1/2 counterpart. Three lattice-independent results follow for integer spin. Singlet pairing of the partons is odd under site exchange. A lattice symmetry can exchange the particle and hole representations of the local constraint, which forces symmetry-related sites into opposite constraint sectors. And a time-reversal-symmetric
U(1) state with the same constraint on every site can be gapped only if the number of sites per unit cell is a multiple of
2S+1. We apply the formalism to the spin-
1 diamond lattice, realized in frustrated A-site spinels, and find ten fully symmetric Ansätze up to second neighbors. In the
J1-
J2 Heisenberg model at the mean-field level, the ground state depends on how the constraint is imposed. With the particle and hole representations, the lowest states are fully gapped
U(1) states whose two sublattices sit in opposite constraint sectors, and one of them is gauge equivalent to a paired Ansatz. The classification provides a starting point for integer-spin quantum spin liquids on other lattices and in other materials.
Motivated by recent numerical discovery of a gapped spin liquid phase in spin-
1/2 triangular-lattice ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model, we classify symmetric
Z2 spin liquids on triangular lattice in the Abrikosov-fermion representation. We find 20 phases with distinct spinon symmetry quantum numbers, eight of which have their counterparts in the Schwinger-boson representation. Among them we identify two promising candidates (#1 and #20), which can realize a gapped
Z2 spin liquid with up to next nearest neighbor mean-field amplitudes. We analyze their neighboring magnetic orders and valence bond solid patterns, and find one state (#20) that is connected to 120-degree Neel order by a continuous quantum phase transition. We also identify gapped nematic
Z2 spin liquids in the neighborhood of the symmetric states and find three promising candidates (#1, #6, and #20).
Geometrical frustration in quantum magnets provides a fertile setting for unconventional phases of matter, including quantum spin liquids (QSLs). The trellis lattice, with its complex site arrangements and edge-sharing triangular motifs, presents a promising platform for such physics. In this work, we undertake a comprehensive classification of all fully symmetric QSLs on the trellis lattice using the projective symmetry group approach within the Abrikosov-fermion representation. We find 7 U(1) and 25 Z 2 short-ranged and analyze the phase diagram in the mean-field parameter space, uncovering both gapped and Dirac QSLs as well as a semi-Dirac spin liquid that emerges at the level of projective symmetry group classification and mean-field band structure, in which the spinon dispersion is linear along one momentum direction but quadratic along the orthogonal one. We demonstrate that such dispersions can occur only at high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone with C 2 v little groups and analyze their characteristic correlation signatures. Moreover, by optimizing over all symmetry-allowed mean-field states, we map out a phase diagram—featuring six distinct phases—of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg Hamiltonian on the trellis lattice. Among these, we find four quasi-one-dimensional QSL phases, one dimer phase, and one Dirac QSL phase. Going beyond mean field, we also assess equal-time and dynamical spin structure factors of these phases using density-matrix renormalization group and Keldysh pseudofermion functional renormalization group calculations and compare qualitative momentum-space features of these spectra with those obtained at the mean-field level. Finally, we identify four cuprate and vanadate compounds as promising experimental realizations and provide spectroscopic predictions, based on first-principles Hamiltonians, as a guide for future neutron-scattering studies on these materials.
We construct and classify
Z2 quantum spin liquids (QSLs) of fermionic partons on the dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlore lattice. The DO pseudospin shares the space-group and time-reversal algebra of the effective spin-1/2 Kramers doublet, its projective symmetry group (PSG) yields the same 48 symmetric
Z2 classes as the generic fermionic classification. We show, the distinct DO symmetry action, encoded in a set of sublattice-independent operators, selects a physically different set of symmetry-allowed mean-field channels, so that the resulting ansatze, spinon spectra, and observables differ from both the effective spin-1/2 case and the bosonic DO classification. Decomposing the anisotropic XYZ exchange model into all symmetric singlet and triplet hopping and pairing channels and minimizing the mean-field energy self-consistently, we obtain phase diagrams in the (
Jx~,Jz~) plane in which only a few
Z2 states, several supporting gapless or flat-band spinon spectra, are stabilized. For these states we compute the spinon band structures, the low-temperature specific heat, and the dynamical spin structure factor, and we argue that the power-law specific-heat exponent is a diagnostic of the spinon nodal structure. A near-linear-in-temperature specific heat together with broad continua in the structure factor gives a fermionic-parton account of the gapless, fractionalized thermodynamics reported in DO materials such as
Nd2ScNbO7, complementing the bosonic quantum-spin-ice picture of the Ce-based compounds. The work extends the fermionic-parton classification of DO pyrochlore QSLs beyond the
U(1) sector, where
Z2 topological order is realized equally naturally by fermionic and bosonic spinons.
