Abstract

Let ${\mathcal H}_1$ be a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space. Let $ψ\mapsto Z(ψ)$ be a canonical anti-commutation relations (CAR) field over ${\mathcal H}_1$ acting irreducibly on a Hilbert space ${\mathord{\mathscr K}}$. The $*$-algebra ${\mathscr A}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$ generated by the $Z(ψ)$, $ψ\in {\mathcal H}_1$, is simply all operators on ${\mathscr K}$. However, the CAR field endows ${\mathscr A}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$ with additional structure, and we are concerned with quantum operations whose acting in harmony with this structure. In particular, there is a gauge automorphism group generated by ``second quantizing'' $ψ\mapsto e^{it}ψ$. The fixed point algebra of the gauge group, ${\mathscr G}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$, is a sub-algebra of ${\mathscr A}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$ studied by Araki and Wyss. It contains the density matrices of an important class of states, the gauge invariant Gaussian states, ${\mathfrak S}_{GIG}$. Our focus is on semigroups $\{e^{t{\mathscr L}}\}_{t\geq 0}$ of quantum operations on ${\mathscr A}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$ that map ${\mathfrak S}_{GIG}$ into itself. Each $e^{t{\mathscr L}}$ is one-to-one, and our first main result is a structure theorem forsuch quantum operations on ${\mathscr G}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$ that map ${\mathfrak S}_{GIG}$ into itself. We apply this to study semigroups of quantum operations on ${\mathscr G}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$ that map ${\mathfrak S}_{GIG}$ into itself. Our second main result is a structure theorem showing that they are parameterized by pairs $(G,A)$ where $G$ is a contraction semigroup generator on ${\mathcal H}_1$, and $0 \leq A \leq -G -G^*$. We then show that each of these semigroups has a natural extension to the full CAR algebra ${\mathscr A}_{{\mathcal H}_1}$. Further results are obtained under further assumptions on the pair $(G,A)$.

Symmetric Gaussian quantum Markov semigroups

Damiano Poletti, Emanuela Sasso, Veronica Umanità

We investigate symmetric Gaussian Quantum Markov Semigroups (G-QMSs), a class of quantum dynamical semigroups acting on the algebra of bounded operators over a bosonic Fock space, whose generators are given in generalized GKLS form with linear and quadratic terms in canonical operators. Our main goal is to characterize the symmetry of such semigroups with respect to a faithful invariant Gaussian state, in terms of explicit algebraic conditions on the generator’s parameters. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for GNS-symmetry using the action of the semigroup on Weyl operators, and show that under natural assumptions, every symmetric G-QMS is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of Ornstein–Uhlenbeck-type semigroups. The results are further linked to modular theory by confirming the well-known fact that GNS-symmetry implies commutation with the modular automorphism group. Technical appendices discuss the role of Bogoliubov and metaplectic transformations in simplifying the structure of symmetric semigroups.

Geometric Algebras and Fermion Quantum Field Theory

Stanley Gudder

Corresponding to a finite dimensional Hilbert space $H$ with $\dim H=n$, we define a geometric algebra $\mathcal{G}(H)$ with $\dim\left[\mathcal{G}(H)\right]=2^n$. The algebra $\mathcal{G}(H)$ is a Hilbert space that contains $H$ as a subspace. We interpret the unit vectors of $H$ as states of individual fermions of the same type and $\mathcal{G}(H)$ as a fermion quantum field whose unit vectors represent states of collections of interacting fermions. We discuss creation operators on $\mathcal{G}(H)$ and provide their matrix representations. Evolution operators provided by self-adjoint Hamiltonians on $H$ and $\mathcal{G}(H)$ are considered. Boson-Fermion quantum fields are constructed. Extensions of operators from $H$ to $\mathcal{G}(H)$ are studied. Finally, we present a generalization of our work to infinite dimensional separable Hilbert spaces. Quanta 2025; 14: 48–65.

On The Generators of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups

Alexander Wiedemann

In recent years, digraph induced generators of quantum dynamical semigroups have been introduced and studied, particularly in the context of unique relaxation and invariance. We define the class of pair block diagonal generators, which allows for additional interaction coefficients but preserves the main structural properties. Namely, when the basis of the underlying Hilbert space is given by the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian (for example the generic semigroups), then the action of the semigroup leaves invariant the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix spaces. In this case, we explicitly compute all invariant states of the semigroup. In order to define this class we provide a characterization of when the Gorini- Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation defines a proper generator when arbitrary Lindblad operators are allowed (in particular, they do not need to be trace- less as demanded by the GKSL Theorem). Moreover, we consider the converse con- struction to show that every generator naturally gives rise to a digraph, and that under certain assumptions the properties of this digraph can be exploited to gain knowledge of both the number and the structure of the invariant states of the corre- sponding semigroup. We also consider more general constructions on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, perhaps infinite dimensional. In partic- ular, we prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on such an algebra which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of con- tractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak∗ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an or- thonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe this form of the generator of a quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear op- erators on a Hilbert space which has an invariant faithful normal state under the assumption that the generator of the associated semigroup has compact resolvent, or under the assumption that the minimal unitary dilation of the associated semigroup of contractions is compact.

Relative Entropy of Fermion Excitation States on the CAR Algebra

Stefano Galanda, Albert Much, Rainer Verch

Abstract The relative entropy of certain states on the algebra of canonical anticommutation relations (CAR) is studied in the present work. The CAR algebra is used to describe fermionic degrees of freedom in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. The states for which the relative entropy is investigated are multi-excitation states (similar to multi-particle states) with respect to KMS states defined with respect to a time-evolution induced by a unitary dynamical group on the one-particle Hilbert space of the CAR algebra. If the KMS state is quasifree, the relative entropy of multi-excitation states can be explicitly calculated in terms of 2-point functions, which are defined entirely by the one-particle Hilbert space defining the CAR algebra and the Hamilton operator of the dynamical group on the one-particle Hilbert space. This applies also in the case that the one-particle Hilbert space Hamilton operator has a continuous spectrum so that the relative entropy of multi-excitation states cannot be defined in terms of von Neumann entropies. The results obtained here for the relative entropy of multi-excitation states on the CAR algebra can be viewed as counterparts of results for the relative entropy of coherent states on the algebra of canonical commutation relations which have appeared recently. It turns out to be useful to employ the setting of a self-dual CAR algebra introduced by Araki.
