In the 1+1D ultralocal lattice Hamiltonian for staggered fermions with a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, there are two conserved, integer-valued charges that flow in the continuum limit to the vector and axial charges of a massless Dirac fermion with a perturbative anomaly. Each of the two lattice charges generates an ordinary U(1) global symmetry that acts locally on operators and can be gauged individually. Interestingly, they do not commute on a finite lattice and generate the Onsager algebra, but their commutator goes to zero in the continuum limit. The chiral anomaly is matched by this non-Abelian algebra, which is consistent with the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem. We further prove that the presence of these two conserved lattice charges forces the low-energy phase to be gapless, reminiscent of the consequence from perturbative anomalies of continuous global symmetries in continuum field theory. Upon bosonization, these two charges lead to two exact U(1) symmetries in the XX model that flow to the momentum and winding symmetries in the free boson conformal field theory.
A nonperturbative lattice regularization of chiral fermions and bosons with anomaly-free chiral symmetry
G in
1+1D spacetime is proposed. More precisely, we ask ``whether there is a local short-range quantum Hamiltonian with a finite Hilbert space for a finite system realizing on-site symmetry
G defined on a 1D spatial lattice with continuous time, such that its low-energy physics produces a
1+1D anomaly-free chiral matter theory of symmetry
G?'' In particular, we propose that the chiral fermion theory with chiral U(1) ${3}_{L}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{5}_{R}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{4}_{L}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{0}_{R}$ symmetry, with two left-moving fermions of charge 3 and 4, and two right-moving fermions of charge 5 and 0 at IR low energy, can emerge from a 1D UV spatial lattice with a chiral U(1) symmetry, if we include properly designed multi-fermion interactions with intermediate strength (i.e., the dimensionless coupling constant is naturally order 1). In general, we propose that any
1+1D U(1)-anomaly-free chiral matter theory can be defined as a finite system on a 1D lattice with on-site symmetry by using a quantum Hamiltonian with continuous time, but without suffering from Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem's fermion doubling, if we include properly designed interactions between matter fields. We propose how to design such interactions by looking for extra anomaly-free symmetries via bosonization/fermionization. We comment on the new ingredients and the differences of ours compared to Ginsparg-Wilson fermion, Eichten-Preskill and Chen-Giedt-Poppitz (CGP) models, and suggest modifying CGP model to have successful mirror decoupling. Since a lattice on-site internal symmetry can be gauged, we thus can further define a nonperturbative regularization of any anomaly-free U(1) chiral gauge theory in
1+1D. As an additional remark, we show a topological nonperturbative proof of the equivalence relation between the
G-symmetric 't Hooft anomaly cancellation conditions and the
G-symmetry-preserving gapping rules (e.g. Haldane's stability conditions for Luttinger liquid) for multiple U(1) symmetries. We expect that our result holds universally regardless of spatial Hamiltonian or spacetime Lagrangian/path integral formulation of quantum theory. Numerical tests on our proposal are demanding tasks but highly desirable for future work.
We establish a state-operator correspondence for a class of non-conformal quantum field theories with continuous higher-form symmetries and a mixed anomaly. Such systems can always be realised as a relativistic superfluid. The symmetry structure induces an infinite tower of conserved charges, which we construct explicitly. These charges satisfy an abelian current algebra with a central extension, generalising the familiar Kac–Moody algebras to higher dimensions. States and operators are organised into representations of this algebra, enabling a direct correspondence. We demonstrate the correspondence explicitly in free examples by performing the Euclidean path integral on a d d -dimensional ball, with local operators inserted in the origin, and matching to energy eigenstates on S^{d-1} S d − 1 obtained by canonical quantisation. Interestingly, in the absence of conformal invariance, the empty path integral prepares a squeezed vacuum rather than the true ground state.
The boundary of symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs) can harbor new quantum anomaly phenomena. In this work, we characterize the bosonic anomalies introduced by the 1+1D non-onsite-symmetric gapless edge modes of (2+1)D bulk bosonic SPTs with a generic finite Abelian group symmetry (isomorphic to $G={\ensuremath{\prod}}_{i}{Z}_{{N}_{i}}={Z}_{{N}_{1}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{{N}_{2}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{{N}_{3}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\cdots})$. We demonstrate that some classes of SPTs (termed ``Type II'') trap fractional quantum numbers (such as fractional
ZN charges) at the 0D kink of the symmetry-breaking domain walls, while some classes of SPTs (termed ``Type III'') have degenerate zero energy modes (carrying the projective representation protected by the unbroken part of the symmetry), either near the 0D kink of a symmetry-breaking domain wall, or on a symmetry-preserving 1D system dimensionally reduced from a thin 2D tube with a monodromy defect 1D line embedded. More generally, the energy spectrum and conformal dimensions of gapless edge modes under an external gauge flux insertion (or twisted by a branch cut, i.e., a monodromy defect line) through the 1D ring can distinguish many SPT classes. We provide a manifest correspondence from the physical phenomena, the induced fractional quantum number, and the zero energy mode degeneracy to the mathematical concept of cocycles that appears in the group cohomology classification of SPTs, thus achieving a concrete physical materialization of the cocycles. The aforementioned edge properties are formulated in terms of a long wavelength continuum field theory involving scalar chiral bosons, as well as in terms of matrix product operators and discrete quantum lattice models. Our lattice approach yields a regularization with anomalous non-onsite symmetry for the field theory description. We also formulate some bosonic anomalies in terms of the Goldstone-Wilczek formula.
We consider the
O(3) nonlinear sigma model with the $\ensuremath{\theta}$ term and its linear counterpart in 1+1D. The model has discrete time-reflection and space-reflection symmetries at any $\ensuremath{\theta}$, and enjoys the periodicity in $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\theta}+2\ensuremath{\pi}$. At $\ensuremath{\theta}=0,\ensuremath{\pi}$ it also has a charge-conjugation
C symmetry. Gauging the discrete space-time reflection symmetries is interpreted as putting the theory on the nonorientable
RP2 manifold, after which the $2\ensuremath{\pi}$ periodicity of $\ensuremath{\theta}$ and the
C symmetry at $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{\pi}$ are lost. We interpret this observation as a mixed 't Hooft anomaly among charge-conjugation
C, parity
P, and time-reversal
T symmetries when $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{\pi}$. Anomaly matching implies that in this case the ground state cannot be trivially gapped, as long as
C,P, and
T are all good symmetries of the theory. We make several consistency checks with various semiclassical regimes, and with the exactly solvable XYZ model. We interpret this anomaly as an anomaly of the corresponding spin-half chains with translational symmetry, parity, and time reversal [but not involving the SO(3)-spin symmetry], requiring that the ground state is never trivially gapped, even if SO(3) spin symmetry is explicitly and completely broken. We also consider generalizations to $\mathbb{C}{P}^{N\ensuremath{-}1}$ models and show that the $C\text{\ensuremath{-}}P\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$ anomaly exists for even
N.
We introduce the \emph{flavoured lattice Schwinger model}, a
(1+1)-dimensional
U(1) lattice gauge theory in which the fermion doubling problem is resolved by staggering a
Z2 flavour degree of freedom rather than staggering chirality. Unlike the standard approaches, this construction preserves an exact axial
U(1) symmetry at finite lattice spacing. We derive the continuum limit, showing that the model reduces to the \emph{two-flavour} massless Schwinger model, with flavours
α∈{0,1} sharing one dynamical
U(1) gauge field. The central result is a well-defined, regularised, gauge-invariant lattice axial charge
QGA whose continuum non-conservation
⟨dQGA/dt⟩=−(2g/π)∫dx⟨E(x)⟩ arises as a direct dynamical consequence of minimal gauge coupling. A particle-hole transformation on the
χ flavour exposes a hidden
UL(2)×UR(2) chiral symmetry; non-Abelian bosonisation then identifies the model with a massive abelian Schwinger sector tensored with the level-
1 SU(2) Wess--Zumino--Witten model. Finally, we show that embedding the flavoured fermions in a ribbon-shaped
(2+1)D Bernevig--Hughes--Zhang topological insulator and gauging the bulk in a constant background field factorises the boundary theory into \emph{two decoupled} single-flavour Schwinger models, one on each edge, identifying the lattice factor of
2 as one quantum of Schwinger anomaly per edge.
