Abstract

We determine the border subrank of higher order structure tensors of several families of algebras, and in particular obtain the following results. (1) We determine tight bounds on the border subrank of $k$-fold matrix multiplication and $k$-fold upper triangular matrix multiplication for all $k$. (2) We determine the border subrank of the higher order structure tensors of truncated polynomial algebras, null algebras, and apolar algebras of a quadric. (3) We determine the border subrank of the higher order structure tensors of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ for all orders. (4) We prove that degeneration of structure tensors of algebras propagates from higher to lower order. Along the way, we investigate which upper bound methods (geometric rank, $G$-stable rank, socle degree) are effective in which settings, and how they relate. Our work extends the results of Strassen (J.~Reine Angew.~Math., 1987, 1991), who determined the asymptotic subrank of these algebras for tensors of order three, in two directions: we determine the border subrank itself rather than its asymptotic version, and we consider higher order structure tensors.

On quantum functionals for higher-order tensors

Alonso Botero, Matthias Christandl, Thomas C. Fraser +2 more

Upper and lower quantum functionals, introduced by Christandl, Vrana and Zuiddam (STOC 2018, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 2023), are families of monotone functions of tensors indexed by a weighting on the set of subsets of the tensor legs. Inspired by quantum information theory, they were crafted as obstructions to asymptotic tensor transformations, relevant in algebraic complexity theory. For tensors of order three, and more generally for weightings on singletons for higher-order tensors, the upper and lower quantum functionals coincide and are spectral points in Strassen's asymptotic spectrum. Moreover, the singleton quantum functionals characterize the asymptotic slice rank, whereas general weightings provide upper bounds on asymptotic partition rank. It has been an open question whether the upper and lower quantum functionals also coincide for other cases, or more generally, how to construct further spectral points, especially for higher-order tensors. In this work, we show that upper and lower quantum functionals generally do not coincide, but that they anchor new spectral points. With this we mean that there exist new spectral points, which equal the quantum functionals on the set of tensors on which upper and lower coincide. The set is shown to include embedded three-tensors and W-like states and concerns all laminar weightings, significantly extending the singleton case. Moreover, it is shown that these spectral points provide obstructions to asymptotic restriction beyond the previously known spectral points.

Border Ranks of Positive and Invariant Tensor Decompositions: Applications to Correlations

Andreas Klingler, Tim Netzer, Gemma De las Cuevas

The matrix rank and its positive versions are robust for small approximations, i.e. they do not decrease under small perturbations. In contrast, the multipartite tensor rank can collapse for arbitrarily small errors, i.e. there may be a gap between rank and border rank, leading to instabilities in the optimization over sets with fixed tensor rank. Can multipartite positive ranks also collapse for small perturbations? In this work, we prove that multipartite positive and invariant tensor decompositions exhibit gaps between rank and border rank, including tensor rank purifications and cyclic separable decompositions. We also prove a correspondence between positive decompositions and membership in certain sets of multipartite probability distributions, and leverage the gaps between rank and border rank to prove that these correlation sets are not closed. It follows that testing membership of probability distributions arising from resources like translational invariant Matrix Product States is impossible in finite time. Overall, this work sheds light on the instability of ranks and the unique behavior of bipartite systems.

Persistent Tensors and Multiqudit Entanglement Transformation

Masoud Gharahi, Vladimir Lysikov

We construct a lower bound of the tensor rank for a new class of tensors, which we call persistent tensors . We present three specific families of persistent tensors, of which the lower bound is tight. We show that there is a chain of degenerations between these three families of minimal-rank persistent tensors that can be used to study the entanglement transformation between them. In addition, we show that these three families of persistent tensors are indeed different generalizations of multiqubit W states within multiqudit systems and are geometrically in the orbit closure of multiqudit GHZ states. Consequently, we show that one can obtain every one of the generalizations of W state from a multiqudit GHZ state via asymptotic Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication (SLOCC) with rate one. Finally, we extend the obtained lower bound of the tensor rank to direct sums with persistent summands and to even more general combinations of tensors, which we call block pyramidal tensors . As a result, we show that the tensor rank is multiplicative under the Kronecker and tensor products of minimal-rank persistent tensors with the GHZ tensor.

Geometric Structures in Tensor Representations (Final Release)

Antonio Falcó, Wolfgang Hackbusch, Anthony Nouy

The main goal of this paper is to study the geometric structures associated with the representation of tensors in subspace based formats. To do this we use a property of the so-called minimal subspaces which allows us to describe the tensor representation by means of a rooted tree. By using the tree structure and the dimensions of the associated minimal subspaces, we introduce, in the underlying algebraic tensor space, the set of tensors in a tree-based format with either bounded or fixed tree-based rank. This class contains the Tucker format and the Hierarchical Tucker format (including the Tensor Train format). In particular, we show that the set of tensors in the tree-based format with bounded (respectively, fixed) tree-based rank of an algebraic tensor product of normed vector spaces is an analytic Banach manifold. Indeed, the manifold geometry for the set of tensors with fixed tree-based rank is induced by a fibre bundle structure and the manifold geometry for the set of tensors with bounded tree-based rank is given by a finite union of connected components. In order to describe the relationship between these manifolds and the natural ambient space, we introduce the definition of topological tensor spaces in the tree-based format. We prove under natural conditions that any tensor of the topological tensor space under consideration admits best approximations in the manifold of tensors in the tree-based format with bounded tree-based rank. In this framework, we also show that the tangent (Banach) space at a given tensor is a complemented subspace in the natural ambient tensor Banach space and hence the set of tensors in the tree-based format with bounded (respectively, fixed) tree-based rank is an immersed submanifold. This fact allows us to extend the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle in the framework of topological tensor spaces.

New techniques for bounding stabilizer rank

Benjamin Lovitz, Vincent Steffan

In this work, we present number-theoretic and algebraic-geometric techniques for bounding the stabilizer rank of quantum states. First, we refine a number-theoretic theorem of Moulton to exhibit an explicit sequence of product states with exponential stabilizer rank but constant approximate stabilizer rank, and to provide alternate (and simplified) proofs of the best-known asymptotic lower bounds on stabilizer rank and approximate stabilizer rank, up to a log factor. Second, we find the first non-trivial examples of quantum states with multiplicative stabilizer rank under the tensor product. Third, we introduce and study the generic stabilizer rank using algebraic-geometric techniques.
