Abstract

In this article, we prove that the quantum $f$-divergence between two normal states on a semifinite von~Neumann algebra is equal to the classical $f$-divergence between two corresponding classical states, which are called Nussbaum-Szkoła distributions. This result has been proved by the second named author and T.C.~John for normal states on the von~Neumann algebra $\mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$. We extend their result for normal states on any semifinite von~Neumann algebra, not only $\mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$.

Quantum f-divergences via Nussbaum–Szkoła distributions and applications to f-divergence inequalities

George Androulakis, Tiju Cherian John

The main result in this paper shows that the quantum [Formula: see text]-divergence of two states is equal to the classical [Formula: see text]-divergence of the corresponding Nussbaum–Szkoła distributions. This provides a general framework for studying certain properties of quantum entropic quantities using the corresponding classical entities. The usefulness of the main result is illustrated by obtaining several quantum [Formula: see text]-divergence inequalities from their classical counterparts. All results presented here are valid in both finite and infinite dimensions and hence can be applied to continuous variable systems as well. A comprehensive review of the instances in the literature where Nussbaum–Szkoła distributions are used, is also provided in this paper.

Integral representations of $f$-divergences for general von Neumann algebras

Ricardo Correa da Silva, Markus B. Fröb, Gandalf Lechner +1 more

We define and analyze hockeystick divergences and $f$-divergences for normal positive functionals on general von Neumann algebras, generalizing and unifying previous work in classical probability and finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras. All the main properties of these state distinguishability measures (including in particular monotonicity, convexity, semicontinuity, bounds, state discrimination, data processing inequality) are derived from properties of the Jordan decomposition of selfadjoint normal functionals. This is done by representing the $f$-divergences as integrals over hockeystick divergences, and their significance in quantum hypothesis testing is reviewed. The $f_0$-divergence given by the information function $f_0(t) = t \ln t$ is shown to coincide with Araki's relative entropy, extending results of Frenkel to general von Neumann algebras.

Sufficient positive maps between von Neumann algebras: Rényi divergences

Anna Jenčová, Lauritz van Luijk

We prove recovery theorems for $α$-$z$ Rényi divergences under normal unital positive maps between von Neumann algebras. Previous results in this setting required 2-positivity, while recent finite dimensional work showed that this assumption can be relaxed to mere positivity. Our proof uses sufficiency for JW*-subalgebras and $L^p$-spaces over them to characterize equality in the data processing inequality. As a further application of our methods, we solve a problem discussed by Haagerup and Stormer: Every conditional expectation of a von Neumann algebra onto a JW*-subalgebra factors through a conditional expectation onto the generated von Neumann subalgebra.

Quantum f-divergences from retrodictive tests: a unifying classical variational principle

Francesco Buscemi

The same classical f-divergence admits inequivalent extensions to quantum states. The question is whether these extensions can be obtained from a common classical variational principle with an operational interpretation. Here we generalize Matsumoto's reverse-test optimization by introducing retrodictive tests relative to a reference state. A retrodictive test compares a forward and a reverse stochastic process, realized by quantum preparation and measurement, related by Petz transposition relative to the chosen reference, and subject to prescribed quantum averages. Equivalently, it compares two reverse tests sharing a reference output, whose labels are coupled by retrodiction. For faithful states in finite dimension, we prove that the same spectral implementation attains the minimum classical f-divergence over all admissible implementations simultaneously for every operator-convex f. A flat reference yields the standard quantum f-divergences, thereby giving the Nussbaum-Szkoła distributions a variational characterization. Choosing either prescribed state as reference recovers maximal quantum f-divergences and Matsumoto's reverse-test optimization, while power references interpolate between the standard and maximal divergences along the geodesic family. In the relative-entropy case, this gives the passage from Umegaki to Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy by changing the reference state. The same optimization extends to arbitrary quantum channels and, for channels with faithful Choi operator, gives a variational characterization of quantum entropy production.

Quantum Relative-alpha-Entropies: A Structural and Geometric Perspective

Sayantan Roy, Atin Gayen, Aditi Kar Gangopadhyay +1 more

Most quantum divergences derive their structure from classical f-divergences or Renyi-type constructions, a dependence that obscures several quantum geometric effects. We introduce a quantum relative-alpha-entropy that extends Umegaki's relative entropy while falling outside the f-divergence class. The proposed divergence exhibits a nonlinear convexity property, which yields a generalized convexity result for the Petz-Renyi divergence for alpha greater than one, complementing the known convexity for alpha less than one. It is additive under tensor products, invariant under unitary transformations, and depends only on the relative geometry of quantum states rather than their absolute magnitudes. Using Nussbaum-Szkola-type distributions, we also establish an exact correspondence of this divergence with classical relative-alpha-entropy. This reveals relative-alpha-entropy as a fundamentally geometric notion of quantum distinguishability not captured by existing divergence frameworks.

Hockey stick fff-divergences

Fumio Hiai, Milán Mosonyi, Marco Tomamichel

In this paper we give a systematic and unified treatment and extensions of various results on a new notion of quantum $f$-divergences defined from quantum hockey stick divergences, the theory of which has been developed recently in \cite{BHT_fdiv,HircheTomamichel_integral,LiuHircheCheng2025}. In particular, we consider non-normalized states and hockey stick $f$-divergences defined from more general notions of quantum hockey stick divergences, as well as a somewhat more general form of the integral representation defined in terms of an additional real parameter. We also consider the extension of the theory to general von Neumann algebras, and extend various results from \cite{HircheTomamichel_integral,LiuHircheCheng2025} to this setting. Our main results here are the representation of the hockey stick $f$-divergences in terms of Neyman-Pearson error probabilities, which was given in the finite-dimensional case in \cite{LiuHircheCheng2025}, an extension of Jen\v cová's result \cite{Jencova2023} on the detection of reversibility of a quantum channel on a pair of states in terms of the hockey stick divergences, and an extension of a result in \cite{HircheTomamichel_integral} showing that the regularized hockey stick Rényi $α$-divergences coincide with the Petz-type Rényi divergences for $α\in(0,1)$ and with the sandwiched Rényi divergences for $α>1$. Moreover, we give some partial results on the characterization of when different notions of quantum $f$-divergences give the same value on a pair of quantum states.
