Abstract

We analyze the Schwarz inequality and its generalizations, as well as inequalities resulting from the Jensen inequality. They are used in quantum theory to derive the Heisenberg-Robertson (HR) and Schroedinger-Robertson (SR) uncertainty relation for two non-commuting observables and their generalizations to three or more non-commuting observables. Jensen's inequality, in turn, is helpful in deriving various the "sum uncertainty relations" for two or more observables. Using these inequalities, we derive various types of generalized uncertainty relations for more than two non--commuting observables and analyze their properties and critical points. We also study the connections between the generalizations of the HR and SR uncertainty relations for two and more observables and the correlations of these observables in the state of the quantum system under study. In this analysis, we pay special attention to the consequences of the generalized SR uncertainty relation for three non--commuting observables on their correlations in a given state of a quantum system and to the connections of this relation with the appropriate correlation matrix, whose matrix elements are the quantum versions of the Pearson coefficient. We show also that the SR uncertainty relation (including the generalized ones) can be written in an equivalent way using these Pearson coefficients.

On some states minimizing uncertainty relations: A new look at these relations

K. Urbanowski

The Heisenberg–Robertson (HR) and Robertson–Schrödinger (RS) uncertainty relations are studied. Analyzing the RS uncertainty relation we found, that there can exist a large set of states of the quantum system under considerations, for which the lower bound of the product of the standard deviations of a pair of noncommuting observables, A and B, is zero, and which differ from those described in the literature for the HR uncertainty relation. These states are not eigenstates of either the observable A or B. The correlation function for these observables in such states is equal to zero. We have also shown that the so-called “sum uncertainty relations” also do not provide any information about lower bounds on the standard deviations calculated for these states. We additionally show that the uncertainty principle in its most general form has two faces: One is that it is a lower bound on the product of standard deviations, and the other is that the product of standard deviations is an upper bound on the modulus of the correlation function of a pair of the noncommuting observables in the state under consideration.

Closer look at sum uncertainty relations and related relations

K. Urbanowski

We analyze the weak and critical points of various uncertainty relations that follow from the inequalities for the norms of vectors in the Hilbert space of states of a quantum system. There are studied uncertainty relations for sums of standard deviations, for sums of variances, and other relations between standard deviations or variances. The obtained results are compared with the conclusions obtained in similar cases using the standard Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation. We also show that there exists an upper bound on the product of standard deviations that appears in the Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation.

Uncertainty relations for quantum particles

Σπυρίδων Κεχριμπάρης

The focus of the present investigation is uncertainty relations for quantum particles, which quantify the fundamental limitations on some of their properties due to their incompatibility. In the first, longer part, we are concerned with preparational uncertainty \nrelations, while in the second we touch upon measurement inequalities through a generalisation of a model of joint measurement of position and momentum. \nSpecifically, starting from a triple of canonical operators, we prove product and sum inequalities for their variances with bounds larger than those following from combining the pairwise ones. We extend these results to N observables for a quantum particle and prove uncertainty relations for the sums and products of their variances \nin terms of the commutators. \nFurthermore, we present a general theory of preparational uncertainty relations for a quantum particle in one dimension and derive conditions for a smooth function of the second moments to assume a lower bound. The Robertson-Schroedinger inequality \nis found to be of special significance and we geometrically study the space of second moments. We prove new uncertainty relations for various functions of the variances and covariance of position and momentum of a quantum particle. Some of our findings are shown to extend to more than one spatial degree of freedom and we derive \nvarious types of inequalities. \nFinally, we propose a generalisation of the Arthurs-Kelly model of joint measurement of position and momentum to incorporate the case of more than two observables and derive joint-measurement inequalities for the statistics of the probes. For the case of \nthree canonical observables and suitable definitions of error and disturbance we obtain a number of error-error-error and error-error-disturbance inequalities and show that the lower bound is identical to the preparational one.

Sum Types of Uncertainty Relations for Generalized Quasi-metric Adjusted Skew Informations

研二郎 柳

It is well known that almost all uncertainty relations including Heisenberg uncertainty relation and Schrödinger uncertainty relation were given by product types of trace inequalities. This is why these results were proved by Schwarz's inequality. These product types of uncertainty relations were extended to the case of not necessarily hermitian quantum mechanical observables and positive operators representing quantum states. On the other hand sum types of uncertainty relations were given for arbitrary finite N not necessarily hermitian quantum mechanical observables. Some uncertainty relations are presented by generalized quasi-metric adjusted skew informations for two different generalized states. These uncertainty relations are nontrivial as long as the observables are mutually noncommutative. The relations among these new and existing uncertainty inequalities have been investigated. Finally, the reverse inequalities of the sum types of uncertainty relations are obtained.

Variance uncertainty relations without covariances for three and four observables

V. V. Dodonov

Sum and product uncertainty relations, containing variances of three or four observables, but not containing explicitly their covariances, are derived. Their consequences are, in particular, inequalities, giving nonzero lower bounds for the products of two variances in the case of zero mean value of the commutator between the related operators. Explicit examples show that the bounds can be better than the known Robertson-Schr\"odinger one.

Variance-Based Uncertainty Relations: A Concise Review of Inequalities Discovered Since 1927

V. V. Dodonov

A brief review of various existing mathematical formulations of the uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics, containing variances of two or more non-commuting operators, is given. In particular, inequalities for the products of higher-order moments of a coordinate and a momentum are considered, as well as inequalities making the uncertainty relations more accurate when additional information about a quantum system is available (for example, the correlation coefficient or the degree of mixing of a quantum state characterized by the trace of the squared statistical operator). The special cases of two, three, and four operators are discussed in detail.
