Abstract

Single-photon sources with high single-photon purity and high brightness are key elements of many future quantum technologies. While photon blockade (PB) is widely exploited in the development of such sources, achieving the coexistence of high purity and high brightness remains a long-standing challenge. Here, we identify a novel mechanism for high-brightness PB and demonstrate that near-ideal purity and near-ideal brightness can be simultaneously achieved in an extended nondegenerate two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model with two-body and three-body interactions. This mechanism is underpinned by a distinctive energy-level structure arising from the combined action of the two interactions. The energy levels in the multi-excitation manifold essentially retain a harmonic ladder of degenerate doublets, whereas in the single-excitation subspace the doublet degeneracy is lifted, with a finite splitting between the two levels. Consequently, when one bosonic mode is driven by a coherent continuous-wave pump, the former degeneracy enables the other bosonic mode to exhibit near-perfect PB even in the strong driving regime, while the latter splitting allows the mean photon number of that mode to approach unity. Our proposed scheme overcomes the outstanding challenge and offers a promising pathway toward realizing ideal single-photon sources.

Photon blockade via three-body interactions: toward high-purity and bright single-photon sources

Sheng Zhao, Peng-Bo Li

Photon blockade is vital for single-photon generation, but current schemes with conventional and unconventional photon blockade face critical limitations like the purity-brightness trade-off, hindering the generation of high-performance single-photons. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a fundamentally new photon blockade mechanism by utilizing three-body interactions between a single photonic mode and two qubits. This kind of interaction intrinsically cuts off the excitation path to the two-photon state, resulting in a perfect photon blockade effect. The mechanism operates across a broad parameter range, free from the constraints of strong coupling or weak driving. Remarkably, it breaks the purity-brightness trade-off, enabling the simultaneous achievement of extreme purity and high brightness, both significantly outperforming previous mechanisms. Furthermore, this approach demonstrates robustness against thermal noise and avoids unwanted oscillations in the time-delayed correlation function. This work provides a path for generating high-purity, high-brightness, and robust single-photon sources, a key resource for quantum technologies.

Collectively Enhanced Universal Photon Blockade

Guohao Chang, Ahmad Abliz

High-purity and bright single-photon sources are important for quantum information processing and precision measurement. We propose a collectively enhanced universal photon-blockade scheme in a multi-emitter two-photon Tavis--Cummings system. Independent coherent drives of the cavity and collective emitter enable destructive interference between two-photon excitation pathways, while collective coupling supplies level anharmonicity. Full-quantum master-equation simulations, the Holstein--Primakoff approximation, and a non-Hermitian probability-amplitude analysis yield the optimal conditions: cavity resonance together with phase and amplitude matching. Compared with a purely collective blockade, the proposed scheme lowers \(g^{(2)}(0)\), and essentially preserves the single-photon population. As the emitter number \(N\) increases, the optimal point remains at \(Δ_c=0\), while the minimum correlation follows \(g_{\min}^{(2)}(0)\propto N^{-2}\). By contrast, unconventional photon blockade shifts away from resonance as \(N\) increases, limiting its purity improvement and brightness. In the weak-drive regime, universal blockade obeys \(g^{(2)}(0)\propto\varepsilon_a^2\), owing to a higher-order bypass through the three-excitation manifold. The drive strength therefore provides an additional purity--brightness control, although the interference mechanism makes the scheme more sensitive to dissipation-rate mismatch. Our results establish a scalable route to bright, high-purity, and tunable single-photon emission in multi-emitter cavity-QED systems.

Robust Universal Photon Blockade in a Bimodal Jaynes-Cummings Model via Kerr Nonlinearity

Guohao Chang, Hunduz Halemjan, Shangyun Liu +2 more

Universal photon blockade in a two-mode Jaynes-Cummings model incorporating third-order Kerr nonlinearity is demonstrated with a single two-level atom coupled to a waveguide microcavity. Realization of this universal photon blockade is attributed to the cooperative effects of field-atom coupling and Kerr nonlinearity. More importantly, this antibunching is found to be robust against the atomic spontaneous emission, driving field strength, and defect-induced cavity mode coupling. The strong antibunching effect in this resonance-driven scheme is essentially different from those without Kerr nonlinearity. Moreover, this work expands the platform for achieving universal photon blockade and reveals the cooperative advantages of nonlinearities in enhancing the purity and brightness of single-photon sources, representing a novel strategy toward high-performance single-photon sources in integrated quantum optical devices.

Photon blockade with high photon occupation via cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

Yu You, Ling-Juan Feng, Bing Chen +3 more

Photon blockade (PB) is one of the effective methods to generate single-photon sources. In general, both the PB effect with the significant sub-Poissonian statistics and a large mean photon number are desired to guarantee the brightness and the purity of single-photon sources. Here, we propose to obtain the PB effect at the cavity dark-state polariton (DSP) using a cavity Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system with and without the two-photon dissipation (TPD). In the Raman resonance case, the PB effect at the DSP could by realized by using the TPD process in the weak or intermediate coupling regime, which accompanies with near unity transmission, i.e., very high photon occupation. In the slightly detuned Raman resonance case, the excited state is induced into the components of the DSP, and the atomic dissipation path is added into the two-photon excitation paths. Thus, the PB effect at the DSP can be obtained due to the quantum destructive interference (QDI) in the strong coupling regime, which can be further enhanced using the TPD process. Due to the slight detuning, the PB effect still remains high photon occupation and has highly tunability. This work provides an alternative way to manipulate the photon statistics by the PB effect and has potential applications in generating single-photon sources with high brightness and purity.

Universal photon blockades via parametric amplification in second-order nonlinearly coupled cavities

Guo-Hua Lv, Rui Hou, Y. H. Zhou +3 more

Photon blockade (PB) is generally classified into conventional and unconventional types based on their distinct physical mechanisms. Recent studies have aimed to bridge the two regimes to realize a universal photon blockade (universal PB) that combines their respective advantages. Here, we propose a scheme for achieving universal PB based on second-order nonlinearity. The second-order nonlinear coupling between two cavity modes mediates the fundamental interaction, while an optical parametric amplifier embedded in one cavity introduces additional quantum interference pathways. We analytically derive the optimal conditions for universal PB, and the analytical results show excellent agreement with numerical simulations. By comparing universal PB with conventional PB, we highlight its unique performance advantages: the scheme operates effectively in both strong and weak coupling regimes, relaxes experimental constraints, and achieves an ultra-low equal-time second-order correlation function g (2) (0) down to 10 −7 , while maintaining a moderate mean photon number N a ∼ 10 −2 . This work provides a feasible and tunable platform for realizing high-purity single-photon sources and exploring quantum statistical properties in nonlinear cavity systems.

Strong single-photon to two-photon bundles emission in spin-1 Jaynes–Cummings model

Jing Tang, Yuangang Deng

High-quality special nonclassical states beyond the strong single atom-cavity coupling regime are fundamental elements in quantum information science. Here, we study strong single-photon blockade to two-photon bundles emission in a single spin-1 atom coupled to an optical cavity by constructing a spin-1 Jaynes–Cummings model (JCM). By tuning the quadratic Zeeman shift, the energy-spectrum anharmonicity can be significantly enhanced, leading to a remarkable increase in the dressed-state splitting of the well-resolved n-photon resonance. The mechanism, which benefits from the internal degrees of freedom in high-spin systems, compensates for the strong coupling condition required by the multi-photon blockade, thereby facilitating the experimental feasibility of engineering special nonclassical states beyond the strong-coupling limit. It is shown that the photon emission from the spin-1 JCM demonstrates high-quality single photon and two-photon bundles with large steady-state photon numbers in the cavity-driven and atom-pump cases, respectively. In particular, compared to the two-level two-photon JCM, the antibunching amplitude of the three-order correlation function for two-photon bundles in the spin-1 JCM is enhanced by 3 orders of magnitude. More interestingly, a multimode transducer, enabling a transition from strong single-photon blockade to two-photon bundles and super-Poissonian photon emission, is achieved and highly controllable by the light-cavity detuning in the presence of both atom and cavity driven fields. This study based on the high-spin JCM broadens the scope of engineering special nonclassical quantum states beyond the standard two-level JCM. Our proposal not only opens up a new avenue for generating high-quality n-photon sources but also provides versatile applications in quantum networks and metrology.
