Abstract

We propose concrete protocols to realize quantum criticality due to excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) experimentally in presumably the simplest and most resilient system involving a single trapped ion oscillating in a radio-frequency Paul trap. We identify a specific class of excited states of the Extended Rabi Model (ERM) Hamiltonian, which occur between two critical ESQPT energies of the model in its (anti)Jaynes-Cummings superradiant phase. Properties of these states motivate the definition of several ESQPT witness observables. We study their critical scaling behaviors as well as various distinct state evolutions by driving the system across the quantum criticalities by changing the qubit-phonon coupling strength linearly in time at different finite rates. A mapping of the theoretical control parameters of the ERM to the experimental parameters of a trapped ion setup is provided, and simulations are performed for values referencing existing state-of-the-art setups, addressing both unitary state evolutions as well as relevant open-system corrections.

Observation of a quantum phase transition in the quantum Rabi model with a single trapped ion

M.-L. Cai, Z.-D. Liu, W.-D. Zhao +7 more

Abstract Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) are usually associated with many-body systems in the thermodynamic limit when their ground states show abrupt changes at zero temperature with variation of a parameter in the Hamiltonian. Recently it has been realized that a QPT can also occur in a system composed of only a two-level atom and a single-mode bosonic field, described by the quantum Rabi model (QRM). Here we report an experimental demonstration of a QPT in the QRM using a 171 Yb + ion in a Paul trap. We measure the spin-up state population and the average phonon number of the ion as two order parameters and observe clear evidence of the phase transition via adiabatic tuning of the coupling between the ion and its spatial motion. An experimental probe of the phase transition in a fundamental quantum optics model without imposing the thermodynamic limit opens up a window for controlled study of QPTs and quantum critical phenomena.

Probing the Dynamics of a Superradiant Quantum Phase Transition with a Single Trapped Ion

Ricardo Puebla, Myung-Joong Hwang, Jorge Casanova +1 more

We demonstrate that the quantum phase transition (QPT) of the Rabi model and critical dynamics near the QPT can be probed in the setup of a single trapped ion. We first demonstrate that there exists equilibrium and nonequilibrium scaling functions of the Rabi model by finding a proper rescaling of the system parameters and observables, and show that those scaling functions are representative of the universality class to which the Rabi model belongs. We then propose a scheme that can faithfully realize the Rabi model in the limit of a large ratio of the effective atomic transition frequency to the oscillator frequency using a single trapped ion and, therefore, the QPT. It is demonstrated that the predicted universal functions can indeed be observed based on our scheme. Finally, the effects of realistic noise sources on probing the universal functions in experiments are examined.

Excited-state quantum phase transition in the Rabi model

Ricardo Puebla, Myung-Joong Hwang, Martin Bodo Plenio

The Rabi model, a two-level atom coupled to a harmonic oscillator, can undergo a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT) [M.-J. Hwang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 180404 (2015)]. Here we show that the Rabi QPT accompanies critical behavior in the higher-energy excited states, i.e., the excited-state QPT (ESQPT). We derive analytic expressions for the semiclassical density of states, which show a logarithmic divergence at a critical energy eigenvalue in the broken symmetry (superradiant) phase. Moreover, we find that the logarithmic singularities in the density of states lead to singularities in the relevant observables in the system such as photon number and atomic polarization. We corroborate our analytical semiclassical prediction of the ESQPT in the Rabi model with its numerically exact quantum mechanical solution.

Dissipative phase transition in the open quantum Rabi model

Myung-Joong Hwang, Peter Rabl, Martin Bodo Plenio

We demonstrate that the open quantum Rabi model (QRM) exhibits a second-order dissipative phase transition (DPT) and propose a method to observe this transition with trapped ions. The interplay between the ultrastrong qubit-oscillator coupling and the oscillator damping brings the system into a steady state with a diverging number of excitations, in which a DPT is allowed to occur even with a finite number of system components. The universality class of the open QRM, modified from the closed QRM by a Markovian bath, is identified by finding critical exponents and scaling functions using the Keldysh functional integral approach. We propose to realize the open QRM with two trapped ions where the coherent coupling and the rate of dissipation can be individually controlled and adjusted over a wide range. Thanks to this controllability, our work opens a possibility to investigate potentially rich dynamics associated with a dissipative phase transition.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in Kerr nonlinear oscillators

Qing-Wei Wang, Sha Wu

Excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) generalize the concept of quantum phase transitions to excited levels. Here we investigate how such ESQPTs can emerge in Kerr nonlinear oscillators, where a bosonic mode with a Kerr nonlinearity is subject to both coherent (one-photon) and parametric (two-photon) driving. We determine the structure and properties of the complete phase diagram by defining proper dimensionless parameters. Rich phases and phase transitions exist in the phase diagram, including phases with two or four critical energies above the ground-state level and first-order quantum phase transitions. We characterize the ESQPTs by singularities in the density of states, which show universal logarithmic divergence or discontinuity at the critical energies. Furthermore, we find that observables such as the photon number also exhibit singular behaviors at the critical energies and obey scaling laws. These results may extend our understanding of the driven Kerr oscillator and ESQPTs in finite-component systems.
