Abstract

We investigate cosmological singularity resolution and relaxation dynamics within the Bohmian mechanics via the plane-symmetric Bianchi type-I minisuperspace model in the Wheeler-DeWitt framework of quantum cosmology by constructing wave functions as Gaussian and Lorentzian wavepackets. Our analyses of the corresponding Bohmian trajectories reveal that Gaussian superposition predominantly yields classical singular solutions, with only a low fraction of small-amplitude cyclic trajectories. On the other hand, the Lorentzian wavepacket, characterized by the power-law momentum tail, generates stronger quantum potential barrier and a substantially rich velocity field, producing a significant fraction of non-singular bounce trajectories over extended volume ranges. We further examine quantum relaxation by evolving non-equilibrium distributions under the corresponding guidance dynamics. The Gaussian superposition exhibits laminar flow leading to boundary accumulation and incomplete relaxation, with non-monotonic decay of the $H$-function followed by saturation. In contrast, the Lorentzian wavepacket induces more complex trajectories, yielding monotonic decay of the $H$-function and better, though still incomplete, approach to Born-rule equilibrium. These results demonstrate that the inherent structure of the wave packet governs both singularity resolution and quantum relaxation through the nature of the Bohmian velocity field.

Singularity Resolution in Quantum Cosmology via Page-Wootters Formalism

Vishal, Malay K. Nandy

We investigate the problem of classical big bang singularity in a plane-symmetric Bianchi type-I universe within the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) framework of quantum gravity. To address the problem of time, we employ the Page-Wootters formalism, which provides a relational notion of dynamics by conditioning the global state on a clock subsystem. Using Misner variables, the WDW equation assumes a Klein-Gordon (KG) type form. Its general solution is constructed as a Gaussian superposition of momentum eigenstates, resulting in an entangled global state between the clock and the remaining subsystem. Within this relational framework, we construct conditional states and obtain the corresponding probability density consistent with the KG-type inner product. The resulting conditional probability density vanishes in the limit of zero volume for all clock values, indicating quantum resolution of the classical singularity. We further show that positivity of the probability density imposes constraints on the admissible clock values, which depend on the parameters of the Gaussian wavepacket. These results highlight the essential role of quantum correlations in the emergence of relational dynamics, and demonstrate that the Page-Wootters formalism provides a consistent and nonsingular probabilistic description of quantum cosmology.

Quantum Cosmology in Page-Wootters' Framework: Singularity Resolution and Clock Coherence

Vishal, Malay Kumar Nandy

We investigate the fate of big-bang singularity and coherence between distinct clock states in a quantum cosmological setting within the Page-Wootters framework. With a canonically quantized plane-symmetric Bianchi I universe, we employ Dirac factorization of the Wheeler-DeWitt constraint and obtain a Schrodinger-like equation which is first-order in an internal clock variable. By constructing its solution as a Gaussian wave packet in the expanding branch, we derive the corresponding conditional state and probability density of the universe. We find that the conditional probability density vanishes in the zero-volume limit, indicating resolution of the big-bang singularity within this probabilistic framework. Another prespective of the study is provided by the construction of density matrix from the conditional states associated with different clock readings and the remaining degree of freedom. By tracing out the remaining subsystem, we obtain the reduced density matrix and analyze the resulting coherence as a function of separation between different clock states. These results provide a relational characterization of singularity resolution and demonstrate how the spectral properties of the quantum state govern the temporal coherence between different clock states in the Page-Wootters description.

Bohmian quantum cosmology from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

Spyros Basilakos, Gerasimos Kouniatalis, Emmanuel N. Saridakis +1 more

We construct a Bohmian quantum cosmological model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled with a single scalar field whose potential provides a unified description of cold dark matter and dark energy at the background level. Starting from the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by a scalar field, we derive the minisuperspace Lagrangian and the associated canonical Hamiltonian formulation. By means of a nontrivial canonical transformation, the minisuperspace dynamics is mapped into that of a two-dimensional hyperbolic oscillator with a fixed frequency ratio, rendering the Wheeler-DeWitt equation exactly solvable by separation of variables. The resulting Wheeler-DeWitt solutions are expressed in terms of parabolic cylinder functions and are parametrised by a continuous separation constant, reflecting the constrained nature of the theory and the absence of a standard Schrödinger time parameter. Adopting the de Broglie-Bohm formulation, we derive deterministic guidance equations in minisuperspace and construct a well-defined Bohmian Hubble parameter directly in terms of the pilot-wave phase. Finally, we present a Wheeler-DeWitt-derived toy wave function for which the Bohmian trajectories and the associated cosmological expansion history can be obtained analytically, reproducing the late-time ΛCDM behaviour while exhibiting quantum modifications at earlier epochs.

QUANTUM COSMOLOGY AND THE ACCELERATED UNIVERSE

Eduardo Sergio Santini

The quantized Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model minimally coupled to a free massless scalar field is studied and interpreted in the Bohm-de Broglie framework. We analyze the quantum bohmian trajectories corresponding to a certain class of gaussian packets, solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We show that these bohmian trajectories undergo an accelerated expansion in the middle of its evolution due to the presence of quantum cosmological effects in this period. It is shown that the luminosity-redshift relation in the quantum cosmological model can be made close to the corresponding relation coming from the classical model suplemented by a cosmological constant, for $z<1$. In this way we have the posibility of interpreting the present observations of high redshift supernovae as the consequence of a quantum cosmological effect.

Wheeler-DeWitt quantization and singularities

F. T. Falciano, Nelson Pinto-Neto, Ward Struyve

We consider a Bohmian approach to the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker model and investigate the question of whether or not there are singularities, in the sense that the Universe reaches zero volume. We find that for generic wave functions (i.e., nonclassical wave functions), there is a nonzero probability for a trajectory to be nonsingular. This should be contrasted to the consistent histories approach for which it was recently shown by Craig and Singh that there is always a singularity. This result illustrates that the question of singularities depends much on which version of quantum theory one adopts. This was already pointed out by Pinto-Neto et al., albeit with a different Bohmian approach. Our current Bohmian approach agrees with the consistent histories approach by Craig and Singh for single-time histories, unlike the one studied earlier by Pinto-Neto et al. Although the trajectories are usually different in the two Bohmian approaches, their qualitative behavior is the same for generic wave functions.

Probabilities in quantum cosmological models: A decoherent histories analysis using a complex potential

J. J. Halliwell

In the quantization of simple cosmological models (minisuperspace models) described by the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, an important step is the construction, from the wave function, of a probability distribution answering various questions of physical interest, such as the probability of the system entering a given region of configuration space at any stage in its entire history. A standard but heuristic procedure is to use the flux of (components of) the wave function in a WKB approximation. This gives sensible semiclassical results but lacks an underlying operator formalism. In this paper, we address the issue of constructing probability distributions linked to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation using the decoherent histories approach to quantum theory. The key step is the construction of class operators characterizing questions of physical interest. Taking advantage of a recent decoherent histories analysis of the arrival time problem in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, we show that the appropriate class operators in quantum cosmology are readily constructed using a complex potential. The class operator for not entering a region of configuration space is given by the $S$ matrix for scattering off a complex potential localized in that region. We thus derive the class operators for entering one or more regions in configuration space. The class operators commute with the Hamiltonian, have a sensible classical limit, and are closely related to an intersection number operator. The definitions of class operators given here handle the key case in which the underlying classical system has multiple crossings of the boundaries of the regions of interest. We show that oscillatory WKB solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation give approximate decoherence of histories, as do superpositions of WKB solutions, as long as the regions of configuration space are sufficiently large. The corresponding probabilities coincide, in a semiclassical approximation, with standard heuristic procedures. In brief, we exhibit the well-defined operator formalism underlying the usual heuristic interpretational methods in quantum cosmology.
