Abstract

We report a novel mechanism of boundary-sensitive PT symmetry breaking in one-dimensional Floquet systems. By designing a time-periodic driving protocol, we realize a Floquet Hamiltonian that is Hermitian under periodic boundary conditions yet acquires non-Hermitian boundary terms under open boundary conditions due to the non-commutativity of driving Hamiltonians. We establish that a PT symmetry breaking transition occurs when the quasienergy bandwidth expands to cover the entire frequency Brillouin zone. This condition highlights a crucial difference from static non-Hermitian systems, where such transitions typically require band touching. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the PT-broken phase, the eigenstates exhibit scale-free localization, a phenomenon arising from the specific system-size scaling of non-Hermitian terms. Finally, we provide a general framework for constructing multi-band models that exhibit this boundary-induced phase transition.

Boundary Floquet Control of Bulk non-Hermitian Systems

Yu-Min Hu, Yu-Bo Shi, Linhu Li +5 more

Boundary perturbations are generally irrelevant for bulk properties in the thermodynamic limit, as they are edge-confined and subextensive. We show that this expectation breaks down in boundary-driven systems exhibiting the non-Hermitian skin effect, where arbitrarily weak boundary Floquet driving reconstructs bulk quasienergy spectra and dynamics. We develop a Floquet non-Bloch band theory that extends generalized Brillouin-zone methods to boundary-driven systems at arbitrary driving frequencies, overcoming the lack of a general framework beyond high-frequency approximations. With representative single- and two-band models, we demonstrate that the boundary driving frequency tunes non-Bloch parity-time symmetry breaking, while its amplitude acts as a finite-size control parameter. Our work establishes boundary Floquet control as a general route for manipulating bulk properties, opening a new avenue for dynamical engineering in driven open systems.

Multiple many-body localization transitions in a driven non-Hermitian quasiperiodic chain

Banerjee, Sanchayan, Banerjee, Ayan, Tapan Mishra +1 more

We investigate the fate of a many-body localized phase in a non-Hermitian quasiperiodic model of hardcore bosons subjected to periodic driving. While in general, the many-body localized system is known to thermalize with increasing driving period due to Floquet heating, in this case, we demonstrate that the initially localized system first delocalizes and then localizes again, resulting in a re-entrant many-body localization (MBL) transition as a function of the driving period. Strikingly, further increase in the driving period results in a series of localization-delocalization transitions leaving behind traces of extended regimes (islands) in between MBL phases. Furthermore, non-Hermiticity renders the extended islands boundary-sensitive, resulting in a Floquet many-body skin effect under open boundaries. We present numerical evidence from spectral and dynamic studies, confirming these findings. Our study opens new pathways for understanding the interplay between non-Hermiticity and quasiperiodicity in driven systems.

Quasi-parity-time symmetric dynamics in periodically driven two-level non-Hermitian system

Zhou Hu, Zhao‐Yun Zeng, Jia Tang +1 more

In recent years, there have been intensive studies of non-Hermitian physics and parity–time (PT) symmetry due to their fundamental importance in theory and outstanding applications. A distinctive character in PT-symmetric system is phase transition (spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking), i.e. an all-real energy spectrum changes into an all-complex one when the non-Hermitian parameter exceeds a certain threshold. However, the conditions for PT-symmetric system with real energy spectrum to occur are rather restrictive. The generalization of PT-symmetric potentials to wider classes of non-PT-symmetric complex potentials with all-real energy spectra is a currently important endeavor. A simple PT-symmetric two-level Floquet quantum system is now being actively explored, because it holds potential for the realization of non-unitary single-qubit quantum gate. However, studies of the evolution dynamics of non-PT-symmetric two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system are still relatively rare. In this paper, we investigate the non-Hermitian physics of a periodically driven non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system. By phase-space analysis, we find that there exist so-called pseudo fixed points in phase space representing the Floquet solutions with fixed population difference and a time-dependent relative phase between the two levels. According to these pseudo fixed points, we analytically construct a non-unitary evolution operator and then explore the dynamic behaviors of the non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system in different parameter regions. We confirm both analytically and numerically that the two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system, although it is non-parity-time-symmetric, still features a phase transition with the quasienergy spectrum changing from all-real to all-complex energy spectrum, just like the PT symmetric system. Furthermore, we reveal that a novel phenomenon called quasi-PT symmetric dynamics occurs in the time evolution process. The quasi-PT symmetric dynamics is so named in our paper, in the sense that the time-evolution of population probabilities in the non-PT-symmetric two-level system satisfies fully the time-space symmetry (PT symmetry), while time-evolution of the quantum state (containing the phase) does not meet such a PT symmetry, due to the fact that time-evolution of the phases of the probability amplitudes on the two levels violates the requirement for the PT symmetry.

Topological metal-insulator transitions in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasicrystals: beyond PT-symmetry

Guangjie Zhang, Bing Shao, Longwen Zhou +2 more

One-dimensional non-Hermitian quasicrystals with parity and time-reversal (PT) symmetry can simultaneously exhibit localization-delocalization transition, topological phase transition, and PT-symmetry-breaking transition. This motivates this work to investigate how the absence of PT symmetry impacts topological metal-insulator transitions in non-Hermitian quasicrystals. We propose a non-Hermitian quasiperiodic model that generally does not preserve PT symmetry and demonstrate that, in most parameter regions, such a system supports triple phase transitions that encompass localization, topology, and degeneracy-breaking. The system may also exhibit a particular type of localization-delocalization transition analogous to the Hermitian case, namely, without activating topological phase transitions or degeneracy-breaking transitions. Our work extends the topological metal-insulator transitions previously studied in PT-symmetric systems to a more general class of non-Hermitian setting, and further reveals that non-Hermitian systems can host distinct types of localization behavior.

Non-Bloch PT Symmetry: Universal Threshold and Dimensional Surprise

Fei Song, Hongyi Wang, Zhong Wang

In the presence of non-Hermitian skin effect, non-Hermitian lattices generally have complex-valued eigenenergies under periodic boundary condition, but they can have non-Bloch PT symmetry and therefore completely real eigenenergies under open boundary condition. This novel PT symmetry and its breaking have been experimentally observed in one dimension. Here, we find that non-Bloch PT symmetry in two and higher dimensions exhibits drastically different behaviors compared to its one-dimensional counterpart. Whereas Bloch PT breaking and one-dimensional non-Bloch PT breaking generally have nonzero thresholds in the large-size limit, the threshold of two and higher-dimensional non-Bloch PT breaking universally approaches zero as the system size increases. A product measure, namely the product of bare non-Hermiticity and system size, is introduced to quantify the PT breaking tendency. This product being small is required for the perturbation theory to be valid, thus its growth with system size causes the breakdown of perturbation theory, which underlies the universal threshold. That the universal behaviors emerge only in two and higher dimensions indicates an unexpected interplay among PT symmetry, non-Hermitian skin effect, and spatial dimensionality. Our predictions can be confirmed on experimentally accessible platforms.

PT Symmetry of a Square-Wave Modulated Two-Level System*

We study a non-Hermitian two-level system with square-wave modulated dissipation and coupling. Based on the Floquet theory, we achieve an effective Hamiltonian from which the boundaries of the <?CDATA ${\mathscr{P}}{\mathscr{T}}$?> P T phase diagram are captured exactly. Two kinds of <?CDATA ${\mathscr{P}}{\mathscr{T}}$?> P T symmetry broken phases are found, whose effective Hamiltonians differ by a constant ω/2. For the time-periodic dissipation, a vanishingly small dissipation strength can lead to the <?CDATA ${\mathscr{P}}{\mathscr{T}}$?> P T symmetry breaking in the (2k – 1)-photon resonance (Δ = (2k – 1) ω), with k = 1,2,3… It is worth noting that such a phenomenon can also happen in 2k-photon resonance (Δ = 2kΔ), as long as the dissipation strengths or the driving times are imbalanced, namely γ 0 ≠ – γ 1 or T 0 ≠ T 1. For the time-periodic coupling, the weak dissipation induced <?CDATA ${\mathscr{P}}{\mathscr{T}}$?> P T symmetry breaking occurs at Δ eff = kω, where Δ eff = (Δ 0 T 0 + Δ 1 T 1)/T. In the high frequency limit, the phase boundary is given by a simple relation γ eff = ±Δ eff.
