Abstract

Quantum spin liquids exhibit fractionalized spin excitations as a consequence of strong quantum many-body effects. The kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is a promising candidate for a quantum spin-liquid ground state; however, the nature of its excitation spectrum remains controversial, particularly regarding the presence of a spin gap and the gauge structure coupled to fractional quasiparticles. To address these issues, parton approaches have been extensively employed, where spin operators are represented in terms of fermionic or bosonic quasiparticles within the Abrikosov fermion and Schwinger boson frameworks. Thus far, these approaches have been pursued independently, and it has remained unclear how the results obtained from these frameworks compare, particularly with respect to the spin dynamics and gauge structure of the kagome antiferromagnet. Here, we investigate the dynamical spin structure factor of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the kagome lattice, relevant to herbertsmithite, by employing both approaches. We find that the dynamical spin structure factor obtained from the Abrikosov fermion mean-field theory exhibits dome-shaped features, and that its continuum structure significantly depends on the gauge structure of the spin-liquid ansatz. On the other hand, the Schwinger boson mean-field theory yields a concave-down structure in the low-energy region, distinct from that obtained using the Abrikosov fermion approach. Moreover, incorporating many-body effects beyond the mean-field approximation substantially reduces the low-energy gap and enhances the low-energy spectral weight, consistent with experimental observations. Our results suggest the importance of many-body effects in the Schwinger boson theory for capturing the low-energy spin dynamics of kagome antiferromagnets.

Identifying spinon excitations from dynamic structure factor of spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice

Wei Kang Zhu, Shou-Shu Gong, D. N. Sheng

A spin-[Formula: see text] lattice Heisenberg Kagome antiferromagnet (KAFM) is a prototypical frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits exotic quantum spin liquids that evade long-range magnetic order due to the interplay between quantum fluctuation and geometric frustration. So far, the main focus has remained on the ground-state properties; however, the theoretical consensus regarding the magnetic excitations is limited. Here, we study the dynamic spin structure factor (DSSF) of the KAFM by means of the density matrix renormalization group. By comparison with the well-defined magnetically ordered state and the chiral spin liquid sitting nearby in the phase diagram, the KAFM with nearest neighbor interactions shows distinct dynamical responses. The DSSF displays important spectral intensity predominantly in the low-frequency region around the [Formula: see text] point in momentum space and shows a broad spectral distribution in the high-frequency region for momenta along the boundary of the extended Brillouin zone. The excitation continuum identified from momentum- and energy-resolved DSSF signals emergent spinons carrying fractional quantum numbers. These results capture the main observations in the inelastic neutron scattering measurements of herbertsmithite and indicate the spin liquid nature of the ground state. By tracking the DSSF across quantum-phase transition between the chiral spin liquid and the magnetically ordered phase, we identify the condensation of two-spinon bound state driving the quantum-phase transition.

Schwinger boson theory for S = 1 Kitaev quantum spin liquids

Anonymous, Joji Nasu

The Kitaev model is an exactly solvable model that exhibits a quantum spin liquid as its ground state. While this model was originally proposed as an S = 1 / 2 spin model on a honeycomb lattice, extensions to higher-spin systems have recently attracted attention. In contrast to the S = 1 / 2 case, such higher- S models are not exactly solvable and remain poorly understood, particularly for spin excitations at finite temperatures. Here, we focus on the S = 1 Kitaev model, which has been proposed to host bosonic quasiparticles. We investigate this model using Schwinger boson mean-field theory, where bosonic spinons are introduced as fractional quasiparticles by extending bond operators to address anisotropic spin interactions. We determine the mean-field parameters that realize a quantum spin liquid in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev models. Based on this mean-field ansatz, we calculate the dynamical and equal-time spin structure factors. We find that, when one uses the conventional decoupling scheme based on Wick decoupling with respect to spinons to calculate spin correlations, the resultant spin structure factors exhibit a momentum dependence that is not consistent with the sign structure expected from the exchange interaction: They possess a strong spectral weight indicating ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) correlations in the antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) Kitaev model. To resolve this issue, we propose an alternative scheme for evaluating the spin correlations, which is based on decoupling with respect to the bond operators. We demonstrate that, in our scheme, this discrepancy is removed, and the momentum dependence of the spin structure factors is consistent with the sign of the exchange constant. We also calculate the temperature evolution of the dynamical spin structure factor and find that the continuum observed at zero temperature splits into two distinct structures as the temperature increases, which can be understood in terms of the bandwidth narrowing of spinons. Finally, we clarify the origin of why the two distinct decoupling schemes result in different momentum dependences of the spin structure factors and discuss their relationship to results obtained in previous studies.

Unification of bosonic and fermionic theories of spin liquids on the kagome lattice

Yuan-Ming Lu, Gil Young Cho, Ashvin Vishwanath

Recent numerical studies have provided strong evidence for a gapped ${Z}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid in the kagome lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. A special feature of spin liquids is that symmetries can be fractionalized, and different patterns of symmetry fractionalization imply distinct phases. The symmetry fractionalization pattern for the kagome spin liquid remains to be determined. A popular approach to studying spin liquids is to decompose the physical spin into partons obeying either Bose (Schwinger bosons) or Fermi (Abrikosov fermions) statistics, which are then treated within mean-field theory. A long-standing question has been whether these two approaches are truly distinct, or describe the same phase in complementary ways. Here we show that all $8{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid phases in the Schwinger-boson mean-field (SBMF) construction can also be described in terms of Abrikosov fermions, unifying pairs of theories that seem rather distinct. The key idea is that for ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid states that admit a SBMF description on the kagome lattice, the symmetry fractionalization of visions is uniquely fixed. Two promising candidate states for the kagome Heisenberg model, Sachdev's ${Q}_{1}={Q}_{2}$ SBMF state and the Lu-Ran-Lee ${Z}_{2}[0,\ensuremath{\pi}]\ensuremath{\beta}$ Abrikosov-fermion state, are found to describe the same symmetric spin liquid phase. We expect these results to aid in a complete specification of the numerically observed spin liquid phase. We also discuss a set of ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid phases in the fermionic parton approach, where spin rotation and lattice symmetries protect gapless edge states that do not admit a SBMF description.

Spin structure factors of chiral quantum spin liquids on the kagome lattice

Jad C. Halimeh, Matthias Punk

We calculate dynamical spin structure factors for gapped chiral spin liquid states in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice using Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. In contrast to static (equal-time) structure factors, the dynamical structure factor shows clear signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking for chiral spin liquid states. In particular, momentum inversion $\mathbit{k}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{-}\mathbit{k}$ symmetry as well as the sixfold rotation symmetry around the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point are lost. We highlight other interesting features, such as a relatively flat onset of the two-spinon continuum for the cuboc1 state. Our work is based on the projective symmetry group classification of time-reversal symmetry breaking Schwinger-boson mean-field states by Messio, Lhuillier, and Misguich.

Quantum spin liquids in the absence of spin-rotation symmetry: Application to herbertsmithite

Tyler Dodds, Subhro Bhattacharjee, Yong Baek Kim

It has been suggested that the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice may be a good starting point for understanding the spin-liquid behavior discovered in herbertsmithite. In this work, we investigate possible quantum spin liquid phases in the presence of spin-rotation symmetry-breaking perturbations such as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Ising interactions, as well as second-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions. Experiments suggest that such perturbations are likely to be present in herbertsmithite. We use the projective symmetry group analysis within the framework of the slave-fermion construction of quantum spin liquid phases and systematically classify possible spin liquid phases in the presence of perturbations mentioned above. The dynamical spin-structure factor for relevant spin liquid phases is computed and the effect of those perturbations are studied. Our calculations reveal dispersive features in the spin structure factor embedded in a generally diffuse background due to the existence of fractionalized spin-$1/2$ excitations called spinons. For two of the previously proposed ${Z}_{2}$ states, the dispersive features are almost absent, and diffuse scattering dominates over a large energy window throughout the Brillouin zone. This resembles the structure factor observed in recent inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on singlet crystals of herbertsmithite. Furthermore, one of the ${Z}_{2}$ states with the spin structure factor with mostly diffuse scattering is gapped, and it may be adiabatically connected to the gapped spin liquid state observed in recent density-matrix renormalization group calculations for the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. The perturbations mentioned above are found to enhance the diffuse nature of the spin structure factor and reduce the momentum dependencies of the spin gap. We also calculate the electron spin resonance (ESR) absorption spectra that further characterize the role of spin-rotation symmetry-breaking perturbations in these states. We suggest that the measurement of ESR spectra can shed more light into the nature of the ground state in herbertsmithite.

Z 2 spin liquids in the S = 1 2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice: A projective symmetry-group study of Schwinger fermion mean-field states

Yuan-Ming Lu, Ying Ran, Patrick A. Lee

Due to strong geometric frustration and quantum fluctuation, the $S=1/2$ quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the $\text{kagome}$ lattice has long been considered as an ideal platform to realize a spin liquid (SL), a phase exhibiting fractionalized excitations without any symmetry breaking. A recent numerical study (Yan et al., e-print arXiv:1011.6114) of the Heisenberg $S=1/2,\text{kagome}$ lattice model (HKLM) shows, in contrast to earlier results, that the ground state is a singlet-gapped SL with signatures of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological order. Motivated by this numerical discovery, we use the projective symmetry group to classify all 20 possible Schwinger fermion mean-field states of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ SLs on the $\text{kagome}$ lattice. Among them we found only one gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ SL (which we call the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}[0,\ensuremath{\pi}]\ensuremath{\beta}$ state) in the neighborhood of the U(1) Dirac SL state. Since its parent state, i.e., the U(1) Dirac SL, was found [Ran et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 117205 (2007)] to be the lowest among many other candidate U(1) SLs, including the uniform resonating-valence-bond states, we propose this ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}[0,\ensuremath{\pi}]\ensuremath{\beta}$ state to be the numerically discovered SL ground state of the HKLM.
