Abstract

The Kitaev model is an exactly solvable model that exhibits a quantum spin liquid as its ground state. While this model was originally proposed as an S = 1 / 2 spin model on a honeycomb lattice, extensions to higher-spin systems have recently attracted attention. In contrast to the S = 1 / 2 case, such higher- S models are not exactly solvable and remain poorly understood, particularly for spin excitations at finite temperatures. Here, we focus on the S = 1 Kitaev model, which has been proposed to host bosonic quasiparticles. We investigate this model using Schwinger boson mean-field theory, where bosonic spinons are introduced as fractional quasiparticles by extending bond operators to address anisotropic spin interactions. We determine the mean-field parameters that realize a quantum spin liquid in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev models. Based on this mean-field ansatz, we calculate the dynamical and equal-time spin structure factors. We find that, when one uses the conventional decoupling scheme based on Wick decoupling with respect to spinons to calculate spin correlations, the resultant spin structure factors exhibit a momentum dependence that is not consistent with the sign structure expected from the exchange interaction: They possess a strong spectral weight indicating ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) correlations in the antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) Kitaev model. To resolve this issue, we propose an alternative scheme for evaluating the spin correlations, which is based on decoupling with respect to the bond operators. We demonstrate that, in our scheme, this discrepancy is removed, and the momentum dependence of the spin structure factors is consistent with the sign of the exchange constant. We also calculate the temperature evolution of the dynamical spin structure factor and find that the continuum observed at zero temperature splits into two distinct structures as the temperature increases, which can be understood in terms of the bandwidth narrowing of spinons. Finally, we clarify the origin of why the two distinct decoupling schemes result in different momentum dependences of the spin structure factors and discuss their relationship to results obtained in previous studies.

Chiral bosonic mean-field Ansatz and spin dynamics in spin-1 Kitaev magnets

Daiki Sasamoto, Arnaud Ralko, Jaime Merino +1 more

The Kitaev model is a paradigmatic system for realizing quantum spin liquids, but its higher-spin extensions are not exactly solvable, and their spin dynamics is less well understood than in the spin-1/2 case. In this work, we reexamine a previously introduced triplet-pairing $ϕ_t = π/2$ phase pattern for the antiferromagnetic $S = 1$ Kitaev model and extend the analysis to weak symmetric off-diagonal exchanges $Γ$ and $Γ'$. Using a bond-operator formulation of Schwinger-boson mean-field theory, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor for the triplet 0-flux and triplet $π/2$-flux Ansätze with a spin-correlation scheme appropriate for Kitaev interactions. In the pure Kitaev limit, the $π/2$-flux Ansatz yields a flatter spectrum than the 0-flux Ansatz. The real-space spin correlations show that the $π/2$-flux Ansatz suppresses longer-distance correlations more strongly than the 0-flux Ansatz, yielding a correlation pattern closer to the short-ranged form expected in the Kitaev limit. This comparison shows that the flatness of $S(\boldsymbol{q}, ω)$ is tied to short-ranged spin correlations and is therefore an important consistency check, although it is not, by itself, a diagnostic of time-reversal-symmetry breaking. We then study weak off-diagonal exchanges along $Γ' = Γ$ near the pure Kitaev limit, taking the same-sign relation from analyses of candidate spin-1 Kitaev materials. Gapped solutions are obtained within the constrained $π/2$-flux manifold, and the spectra share the qualitative energy- and momentum-space features found by finite-size exact diagonalization. Taken together, these results support the triplet $π/2$-flux chiral bosonic Ansatz as a useful mean-field description of spin dynamics near the antiferromagnetic $S = 1$ Kitaev limit with weak off-diagonal exchanges.

Schwinger boson perturbation theory for spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg magnets: phase diagram and dynamical response near Kitaev spin liquids

Daiki Sasamoto, Joji Nasu

We develop a Schwinger boson perturbative framework for the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The spin-liquid saddle point of the pure Kitaev model is used as the unperturbed state, and magnetic instabilities and dynamical spin correlations are evaluated around this saddle point. We decompose the Hamiltonian exactly into two parts by exploiting the Klein duality intrinsic to the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. We perform the random-phase approximation by taking the part invariant under the duality transformation as the unperturbed term and treating the remaining term, which changes sign under it, as the perturbation. We determine the phase boundaries separating the quantum spin-liquid regimes from the adjacent magnetically ordered phases for $S=1/2$, $1$, $3/2$, and $2$. The spin-liquid regions shrink rapidly with increasing $S$ and become very narrow at $S=2$. We also compute the spin dynamics of the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model, focusing on $S=1$, and find that the dressed dynamical spin structure factor retains a broad two-spinon continuum at finite energies, while the low-energy spectral weight softens at the ordering wave vectors of the adjacent magnetic phases. Our framework thus enables thermodynamic-limit calculations of spin dynamics near magnetic instabilities.

Dynamical spin correlations in kagome antiferromagnets: Comparison of the Abrikosov fermion and Schwinger boson approaches beyond mean field

Anonymous, Joji Nasu

Quantum spin liquids exhibit fractionalized spin excitations as a consequence of strong quantum many-body effects. The kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is a promising candidate for a quantum spin-liquid ground state; however, the nature of its excitation spectrum remains controversial, particularly regarding the presence of a spin gap and the gauge structure coupled to fractional quasiparticles. To address these issues, parton approaches have been extensively employed, where spin operators are represented in terms of fermionic or bosonic quasiparticles within the Abrikosov fermion and Schwinger boson frameworks. Thus far, these approaches have been pursued independently, and it has remained unclear how the results obtained from these frameworks compare, particularly with respect to the spin dynamics and gauge structure of the kagome antiferromagnet. Here, we investigate the dynamical spin structure factor of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the kagome lattice, relevant to herbertsmithite, by employing both approaches. We find that the dynamical spin structure factor obtained from the Abrikosov fermion mean-field theory exhibits dome-shaped features, and that its continuum structure significantly depends on the gauge structure of the spin-liquid ansatz. On the other hand, the Schwinger boson mean-field theory yields a concave-down structure in the low-energy region, distinct from that obtained using the Abrikosov fermion approach. Moreover, incorporating many-body effects beyond the mean-field approximation substantially reduces the low-energy gap and enhances the low-energy spectral weight, consistent with experimental observations. Our results suggest the importance of many-body effects in the Schwinger boson theory for capturing the low-energy spin dynamics of kagome antiferromagnets.

Temperature evolution of spin dynamics in extended Kitaev models within an Abrikosov fermion theory beyond mean field

Daiki Sasamoto, Joji Nasu

The $S=1/2$ Kitaev model provides an exactly solvable setting in which spin fractionalization produces itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. In realistic Kitaev magnets, however, non-Kitaev interactions break integrability and make their finite-temperature dynamics difficult to calculate. We develop a finite-temperature parton mean-field theory based on the Abrikosov-fermion representation and incorporate the effects of exchange interactions through the random phase approximation to calculate the dynamical spin structure factor. For the pure Kitaev model, the method reproduces a strong, nearly dispersionless peak at a finite low energy together with a broad continuum at higher energies. It also reproduces the momentum dependence of the dynamical spin structure factor and its temperature evolution, including the downward shift of the low-energy spectral weight, in qualitative agreement with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Within the present theory, the contraction of the continuum is traced to the temperature-induced reduction of the bond amplitudes, which narrows the parton bands and compresses the two-parton phase space. For ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling, the energy of the low-energy peak is minimized at the $Γ$ point for a ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction and maximized there for an antiferromagnetic interaction. In the ferromagnetic Kitaev-$Γ$ model, the static response develops a finite-momentum softening, indicating an instability toward the period-three magnetic order reported in numerical studies. For uniform-ferromagnetic states selected by a $[111]$ magnetic field, we find that a broad parton continuum coexists with magnonlike dispersive structures, producing spectral features consistent with a spinon-to-magnon crossover.

Chiral bosonic quantum spin liquid in the integer-spin Heisenberg-Kitaev model

Arnaud Ralko, Jaime Merino

Motivated by the possibility of finding a bosonic quantum spin liquid in the integer spin-$S$ Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, we derive a Schwinger boson mean-field theory involving both singlet and triplet pairing channels which includes hopping and pairing operators on equal footing. The mixed construction introduced here is justified by the good comparison with exact diagonalization energies of the $S\ensuremath{\le}3/2$ Heisenberg-Kitaev model and the perfect match with the Luttinger-Tisza semiclassical energies obtained at large $S$. We find various competing gapped quantum spin liquids close to the Kitaev point. A comparison of their spin excitation spectrum with the dynamical structure factor obtained from exact diagonalizations allows us to identify the physical spin liquid Ansatz of the model. In particular, we identify a chiral quantum spin liquid state whose spin excitation spectrum follows closely the exact diagonalization data and survives up to large spin $S\ensuremath{\lesssim}2$. We propose this state as a promising quantum spin liquid candidate for the integer spin-$S$ antiferromagnetic Kitaev model which may be realized in $S=1$ Kitaev materials ${\mathrm{A}}_{3}{\mathrm{Ni}}_{2}{\mathrm{XO}}_{6}$ and ${\mathrm{KNiAsO}}_{4}$.

Majorana dynamical mean-field study of spin dynamics at finite temperatures in the honeycomb Kitaev model

Junki Yoshitake, Joji Nasu, Yasuyuki Kato +1 more

A prominent feature of quantum spin liquids is fractionalization of the spin degree of freedom. Fractionalized excitations have their own dynamics in different energy scales, and hence, affect finite-temperature ($T$) properties in a peculiar manner even in the paramagnetic state harboring the quantum spin liquid state. We here present a comprehensive theoretical study of the spin dynamics in a wide $T$ range for the Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, whose ground state is a quantum spin liquid. In this model, the fractionalization occurs to break up quantum spins into itinerant matter fermions and localized ${Z}_{2}$ fluxes, which results in two crossovers at very different $T$ scales. Extending the previous study for the isotropic coupling case [J. Yoshitake, J. Nasu, and Y. Motome, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 157203 (2016)], we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor $S(\mathbf{q},\ensuremath{\omega})$, the NMR relaxation rate $1/{T}_{1}$, and the magnetic susceptibility $\ensuremath{\chi}$ while changing the anisotropy in the exchange coupling constants, by using the dynamical mean-field theory based on a Majorana fermion representation. We describe the details of the methodology including the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method for computing dynamical spin correlations and the maximum entropy method for analytic continuation. We confirm that the combined method provides accurate results in a wide $T$ range including the region where the spins are fractionalized. We find that also in the anisotropic cases the system exhibits peculiar behaviors below the high-$T$ crossover whose temperature is comparable to the average of the exchange constants: $S(\mathbf{q},\ensuremath{\omega})$ shows an inelastic response at the energy scale of the averaged exchange constant, $1/{T}_{1}$ continues to grow even though the equal-time spin correlations are saturated and almost $T$ independent, and $\ensuremath{\chi}$ deviates from the Curie-Weiss behavior. In particular, when the exchange interaction in one direction is stronger than the other two, the dynamical quantities exhibit qualitatively different $T$ dependences from the isotropic case at low $T$, reflecting the opposite parity between the flux-free ground state and the flux-excited state, and a larger energy cost for flipping a spin in the strong interaction direction. On the other hand, when the exchange anisotropy is in the opposite way, the results are qualitatively similar to those in the isotropic case. All these behaviors manifest the spin fractionalization in the paramagnetic region. Among them, the dichotomy between the static and dynamical spin correlations is unusual behavior hardly seen in conventional magnets. We discuss the relation between the dichotomy and the spatial configuration of the ${Z}_{2}$ gauge fields. Our results could stimulate further experimental and theoretical analyses of candidate materials for the Kitaev quantum spin liquids.
