Abstract

In this paper we investigate the asymptotic statistical theory of irreducible quantum Markov chains, focusing on identifiability properties and asymptotic convergence of associated quantum statistical models. We show that the space of identifiable parameters for the stationary output is a stratified space called an orbifold, which is obtained as the quotient of the manifold of irreducible dynamics by a compact group of state preserving symmetries. We analyse the orbifold's geometric properties, the connection between periodicity and strata, and provide orbifold charts as the starting point for the local asymptotic theory. The quantum Fisher information rate of the system and output state is expressed in terms of a canonical inner product on the identifiable tangent space. We then show that the joint system and output model satisfies quantum local asymptotic normality while the stationary output model converges to a product between a quantum Gaussian shift model and a mixture of quantum Gaussian shift models, reflecting the underlying periodicity. These strong convergence results provide the basis for constructing asymptotically optimal estimators of dynamical parameters. We provide an in-depth analysis of the model with smallest dimensions, consisting of two-dimensional system and environment units.

Fisher informations and local asymptotic normality for continuous-time quantum Markov processes

Catalin Catana, Luc Bouten, Mădălin Guţǎ

We consider the problem of estimating an arbitrary dynamical parameter of an open quantum system in the input–output formalism. For irreducible Markov processes, we show that in the limit of large times the system-output state can be approximated by a quantum Gaussian state whose mean is proportional to the unknown parameter. This approximation holds locally in a neighbourhood of size in the parameter space, and provides an explicit expression of the asymptotic quantum Fisher information in terms of the Markov generator. Furthermore we show that additive statistics of the counting and homodyne measurements also satisfy local asymptotic normality and we compute the corresponding classical Fisher informations. The general theory is illustrated with the examples of a two-level system and the atom maser. Our results contribute towards a better understanding of the statistical and probabilistic properties of the output process, with relevance for quantum control engineering, and the theory of non-equilibrium quantum open systems.

EQUIVALENCE CLASSES AND LOCAL ASYMPTOTIC NORMALITY IN SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION FOR QUANTUM MARKOV CHAINS

Mădălin Guţǎ, Jukka Kiukas

Abstract. We consider the problems of identifying and estimating dynamical parameters of an ergodic quantum Markov chain, when only the stationary output is accessible for measurements. On the identifiability question, we show that the knowledge of the output state completely fixes the dynamics up to a ‘coordinate transformation’ consisting of a multiplication by a phase and a unitary conjugation of the Kraus operators. When the dynamics depends on an unknown parameter, we show that the latter can be estimated at the ‘standard ’ rate n−1/2, and give an explicit expression of the (asymptotic) quantum Fisher information of the output, which is proportional to the Markov variance of a certain ‘generator’. More generally, we show that the output is locally asymptotically normal, i.e. it can be approximated by a simple quantum Gaussian model consisting of a coherent state whose mean is related to the unknown parameter. As a consistency check we prove that a parameter related to the ‘coordinate transformation ’ unitaries, has zero quantum Fisher information. 1.

Information geometry and local asymptotic normality for multi-parameter estimation of quantum Markov dynamics

Mădălin Guţǎ, Jukka Kiukas

This paper deals with the problem of identifying and estimating dynamical parameters of continuous-time Markovian quantum open systems, in the input-output formalism. First, we characterise the space of identifiable parameters for ergodic dynamics, assuming full access to the output state for arbitrarily long times, and show that the equivalence classes of undistinguishable parameters are orbits of a Lie group acting on the space of dynamical parameters. Second, we define an information geometric structure on this space, including a principal bundle given by the action of the group, as well as a compatible connection, and a Riemannian metric based on the quantum Fisher information of the output. We compute the metric explicitly in terms of the Markov covariance of certain “fluctuation operators” and relate it to the horizontal bundle of the connection. Third, we show that the system-output and reduced output state satisfy local asymptotic normality, i.e., they can be approximated by a Gaussian model consisting of coherent states of a multimode continuous variables system constructed from the Markov covariance “data.” We illustrate the result by working out the details of the information geometry of a physically relevant two-level system.

Asymptotic inference in a stationary quantum time series

Michael Nussbaum, Arleta Szkoła

We consider a statistical model of a n-mode quantum Gaussian state which is shift invariant and also gauge invariant. Such models can be considered analogs of classical Gaussian stationary time series, parametrized by their spectral density. Defining an appropriate quantum spectral density as the parameter, we establish that the quantum Gaussian time series model is asymptotically equivalent to a classical nonlinear regression model given as a collection of independent geometric random variables. The asymptotic equivalence is established in the sense of the quantum Le Cam distance between statistical models (experiments). The geometric regression model has a further classical approximation as a certain Gaussian white noise model with a transformed quantum spectral density as signal. In this sense, the result is a quantum analog of the asymptotic equivalence of classical spectral density estimation and Gaussian white noise, which is known for Gaussian stationary time series. In a forthcoming version of this preprint, we will also identify a quantum analog of the periodogram and provide optimal parametric and nonparametric estimates of the quantum spectral density.

Information Geometrical Characterization of Quantum Statistical Models in Quantum Estimation Theory

Jun Suzuki

In this paper, we classify quantum statistical models based on their information geometric properties and the estimation error bound, known as the Holevo bound, into four different classes: classical, quasi-classical, D-invariant, and asymptotically classical models. We then characterize each model by several equivalent conditions and discuss their properties. This result enables us to explore the relationships among these four models as well as reveals the geometrical understanding of quantum statistical models. In particular, we show that each class of model can be identified by comparing quantum Fisher metrics and the properties of the tangent spaces of the quantum statistical model.
