Abstract

We introduce and study a disorder-free version of the quantum breakdown model with all-to-all interactions. The Hamiltonian factorizes into the product of the zero-momentum-mode occupation number and a quadratic Hamiltonian including only pairing terms. This structure makes the model exactly solvable and produces an extensive zero-energy degeneracy. We obtain the spectrum and partition function in closed form and analyze the thermodynamics, spectral form factor, two-point functions, and a regulated out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC). The OTOC is time independent at leading order in the large-$N$ limit, while its time-dependent contributions first appear at order $1/N$. At infinite temperature, the time-dependent correction reduces to a two-point function arising from the zero-momentum component of the fermion operators. The model therefore provides a controlled setting for isolating the consequences of the breakdown interaction in the absence of disorder, spatial structure, and environmental coupling.

Spontaneous particle-hole symmetry breaking in a disordered two-site quantum breakdown model

Kinya Guan

We study spontaneous particle-hole symmetry breaking in a disordered two-site quantum breakdown model. The model is solvable in the limit of a large number of fermionic modes on each site. For a small ratio of the numbers of modes on the two sites, we derive the free energy analytically and find a finite-temperature symmetry-breaking transition. This transition changes from continuous to first order as the number of fermions produced in each conversion increases. Numerical results show that both types of transition persist beyond this regime, with an order-parameter exponent close to $1/2$ for continuous transitions.

Exactly Solvable Many-Boson Model

R. W. Richardson

A many-boson model is formulated and expressions for its exact eigenstates and energies are obtained for both an arbitrary finite and an infinite number of bosons. The Hamiltonian of the model contains interactions between bosons whose momenta have equal magnitudes but opposite directions. The matrix elements of this interaction are taken to be a constant over a range of momenta surrounding k = 0. The ground state of the 2N-particle system is shown to be a product of N pair-creation operators acting on the vacuum state. Each of these pair-creation operators depends upon one of N parameters which are called pair energies. The N pair energies are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The energy of the state is the sum of the pair energies and the occupation probabilities of the single-particle levels are given as simple functions of the pair energies. Similar results are derived for the excited states of the system and for the states of an odd number of particles. These results are valid for both a repulsive and an attractive interaction, since they only depend upon the form of the interaction. The equations are solved algebraically for two model systems. The first of these is one whose single-particle kinetic energy takes on only one value. The equations for this system are solved for an arbitrary interaction strength and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Laguerre polynomials. The second system is one in which the single-particle kinetic energy can take on two values. The equations for this system are solved in the strong repulsive-interaction limit and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Jacobi polynomials. The excitation energies of this second system are shown to be proportional to 1/n and the occupations of the two single-particle levels in the ground state are shown to be proportional to n, where n is the total number of particles. For a repulsive interaction and an arbitrary single-particle spectrum, the algebraic equations for the pair energies are converted into an approximate integral equation for the density of roots which is accurate to order 1/n. This integral equation is solved for a strong interaction which, in the context of this model, means an interaction whose strength is greater than a constant times 1/V⅔ in the limit of a large volume. From this solution, the following results are obtained: (1) the lowest two single-particle levels have occupations of order n; (2) the excitation spectrum is that of a set of noninteracting quasiparticles; and (3) the quasiparticle spectrum has two zeros corresponding to the lowest two single-particle levels. Apart from the presence of two zeros, the quasiparticle spectrum does not differ significantly from that of the noninteracting particles.

On thermalization in random free fermions: Statistical origins and energy-dependent ETH structure

Xiao-Kan Guo, Zhiqiang Huang

We analyze thermalization and eigenstate thermalization in the random free fermion model, a quadratic Hamiltonian with a Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble hopping matrix, by an exact random-matrix calculation. For a single-particle observable $A$ we compute the ensemble average and fluctuations of $\operatorname{Tr}(Aρ(t))$: we derive the relaxation envelope $g^2(t/τ_λ)$ with $τ_λ= \hbar/(2η\sqrt{N})$ and its oscillatory $|t|^{-3}$ tail, both properties of the semicircular limiting density, and we show that the variance of the fluctuations is $O(1/N)$, so that the relaxation profile self-averages at fixed scaled time. Incorporating particle-number conservation, we prove a factorization theorem for the energy-shell statistics of the many-body eigenstates: the energy-independent ETH structure follows from the statistical independence of the eigenvector matrix and the spectrum, and at fixed realization the energy constraint enters only through a covariance subtraction of relative order $1/N$. A controlled eigenvector--eigenvalue correlation deformation $H(\varepsilon)=H_0+\varepsilon H_1$ then generates, at first order in $\varepsilon$, the energy dependence of the diagonal energy-resolved slope and of the off-diagonal spectral function, a single-particle diagnostic of the ETH structure in the allowed particle-hole sector. Correlation-function fluctuations and the single-particle spectral form factor finally identify the subleading $O(1/N)$ late-time fingerprints of two-level spectral correlations. The model thus separates eigenbasis chaos from spectral chaos and identifies the statistical origin of energy-independent versus energy-dependent ETH.

Deterministic Hypergraph SYK: Melonic Dominance and Maximal Chaos Without Disorder Averaging

Shiroman Prakash

We show that SYK-like melonic solvability and maximal chaos survive in a sparse deterministic model, without disorder averaging. Our deterministic hypergraph SYK model (hSYK) consists of $N$ Majorana fermions on a $q$-uniform, $d$-regular interaction hypergraph with only $O(dN)$ interaction terms and uniform positive couplings. Under explicit geometric and spectral expansion conditions, its two-point function satisfies the standard melonic Schwinger-Dyson equation up to $O(d^{-1})$ corrections, while the leading bilocal effective action coincides with that of ordinary SYK at the dominant large-$d$ saddle. Its connected four-point function factorizes into a temporal SYK ladder kernel and a line-graph random walk. A finite line-graph spectral gap controls the visibility of the maximally chaotic uniform mode in generic localized OTOCs and, by gapping non-uniform spatial modes in the bilocal spectrum, excludes additional light fluctuation modes beyond the Schwarzian. Exact diagonalization further shows melonic two-point scaling, single-instance Wigner-Dyson statistics, and the predicted graph-controlled spatial decay of OTOCs. The model therefore offers a disorder-free realization of the essential melonic and chaotic features of SYK, in a form more amenable to quantum simulation.

Daniel Charles Mattis, Sang Boo Nam

We diagonalize a many-fermion Hamiltonian consisting of terms quadratic as well as quartic in the field operators. A dual spectrum of eigenstates is an interesting result. We also derive a formula for obtaining the free energy at finite temperature.

Disorder lines, modulation, and partition function zeros in free fermion models

P. N. Timonin, Gennady Y. Chitov

The modulation is analyzed from the analytical properties of zeros of the free fermionic partition function on the complex plane of wave numbers. It is shown how these properties are related to the oscillations of correlation functions. This approach can be used for analysis of phase transitions with local or nonlocal order parameters, as well as for the disorder lines. We find an infinite cascade of disorder lines at finite temperature in the quantum $XY$ chain (equivalent to free fermions). The well-known ground-state factorization on the disorder line, and consequently disentanglement, is shown to follow directly from analytical properties of this model on the complex plane. From the quantum-classical correspondence the results for the chain are used to detect the disorder lines in several frustrated two-dimensional Ising models. The present formalism can be applied to other fermionic models in two and three spatial dimensions. In particular, we find the temperature-dependent Fermi wave vector of oscillations in the degenerate gas of three-dimensional fermions, which naturally leads in the limit $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ to the definition of the Fermi energy as the surface of quantum criticality. The modulation is a very common phenomenon, and it occurs in a large variety of models. The important point is that all these modulation transitions can be related to the complex zeros of partition functions, as done in the present study.
