Equilibrium Partition Function of Non-Relativistic CFTs in Harmonic Trap

Abstract

We investigate the equilibrium partition function of non-relativistic conformal field theories in harmonic quantization. We first analyze the hydrodynamic regime and show that, at leading order, the partition function exhibits a universal structure determined by the equation of state: the logarithm of the partition function develops simple poles in $ω^2-Ω_a^2$, where $ω$ is the harmonic trapping frequency and $Ω_a$ are angular velocities acting as chemical potentials for angular momentum. The corresponding residue is determined by a single-variable function of $μ/T$, with $μ$ the particle-number chemical potential and $T$ the temperature. We then study the large-angular-momentum limit $Ω_a\toω$. In this regime centrifugal effects nearly cancel the trapping potential, and the logarithm of the partition function again exhibits simple poles in $ω^2-Ω_a^2$, but with a less universal residue depending separately on $μ/T$ and $ω/T$. As explicit examples we analyze superfluid systems realizable in cold-atom experiments, in particular fermions at unitarity confined in a harmonic trap.

Semi-universality of CFT$_d$ entropy at large spin

The thermal partition function, Z Z , of a CFT_d C F T d on S^{d-1} S d − 1 is parameterized by the inverse temperature \beta β along with \lfloor d/2\rfloor ⌊ d / 2 ⌋ angular velocities \omega_i ω i . In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of this partition function when n n of the \omega_i ω i are scaled to unity (the largest allowed value) at fixed values of the other (\lfloor d/2\rfloor-n) ( ⌊ d / 2 ⌋ − n ) angular velocities. We argue that \ln Z ln ⁡ Z develops a simple pole in (1-\omega_i) ( 1 − ω i ) for each \omega_i ω i that is scaled to unity. The residue of this product of poles is a theory-dependent (so non-universal) function of \beta β and the fixed angular velocities. The inverse Laplace transformation of this partition function constrains the functional form of the field theory entropy as a function of charges in a limit in which angular momenta and the twist are scaled as follows. The spinful large charge sector of non-relativistic CFTs: from phonons to vortex crystals

Shauna Kravec, Sridip Pal

Abstract We study operators in Schrödinger invariant field theories (non-relativistic conformal field theories or NRCFTs) with large charge (particle number) and spin. Via the state-operator correspondence for NRCFTs, such operators correspond to states of a superfluid in a harmonic trap with phonons or vortices. Using the effective field theory of the Goldstone mode, we compute the dimensions of operators to leading order in the angular momentumLand chargeQ. We find a diverse set of scaling behaviors for NRCFTs in bothd= 2 andd= 3 spatial dimensions. These results apply to theories with a superfluid phase, such as unitary fermions or critical anyon systems.

Thermodynamics of rotating quantum matter in the virial expansion

Casey Berger, K. J. Morrell, Joaquín E. Drut

We characterize the high-temperature thermodynamics of rotating bosons and fermions in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) isotropic harmonic trapping potentials. We begin by calculating analytically the conventional virial coefficients ${b}_{n}$ for all $n$ in the noninteracting case, as functions of the trapping and rotational frequencies. We also report on the virial coefficients for the angular momentum and associated moment of inertia. Using the ${b}_{n}$ coefficients, we analyze the deconfined limit (in which the angular frequency matches the trapping frequency) and derive explicitly the limiting form of the partition function, showing from the thermodynamic standpoint how both the 2D and 3D cases become effectively homogeneous 2D systems. To tackle the virial coefficients in the presence of weak interactions, we implement a coarse temporal lattice approximation and obtain virial coefficients up to third order.

Warped Weyl fermion partition functions

Alejandra Castro, Diego M. Hofman A, Gábor Sárosi

Warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are a novel class of non-relativistic theories. A simple, yet non-trivial, example of such theory is a massive Weyl fermion in (1 + 1)-dimensions, which we study in detail. We derive general properties of the spectrum and modular properties of partition functions of WCFTs. The periodic (Ramond) sector of this fermionic system is non-trivial, and we build two novel partition functions for this sector which have no counterpart in a CFT2. The thermodynamical properties of WCFTs are revisited in the canonical and micro-canonical ensemble.

Generalized Gibbs Ensemble of 2D CFTs with U(1) charge from the AGT correspondence

Fábio Novaes

A bstract The Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) is relevant to understand the thermalization of quantum systems with an infinite set of conserved charges. In this work, we analyze the GGE partition function of 2D Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) with a U(1) charge and quantum Benjamin-Ono 2 (qBO 2 ) hierarchy charges. We use the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa (AGT) correspondence to express the thermal trace in terms of the Alba-Fateev-Litvinov-Tarnopolskiy (AFLT) basis of descendants, which diagonalizes all charges. We analyze the GGE partition function in the thermodynamic semiclassical limit, including the first order quantum correction. We find that the equality between GGE averages and primary eigenvalues of the qBO 2 charges is attainable in the strict large c limit and potentially violated at the subleading 1 /c order. We also obtain the finite c partition function when only the first non-trivial charge is turned on, expressed in terms of partial theta functions. Our results should be relevant to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for charged CFTs, Warped CFTs and effective field theory descriptions of condensed matter systems.

The unitary Fermi gas at large charge and large N

Simeon Hellerman, Daniil Krichevskiy, Domenico Orlando +3 more

A bstract We study the unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trapping potential starting from a microscopic theory in the limit of large charge and large number of fermion flavors N . In this regime, we present an algorithmic procedure for extracting data from perturbation theory, order-by-order, without the need for other assumptions. We perform a gradient expansion in the interior of the particle cloud, sufficiently far from the cloud edge where the particle density drops rapidly to zero. In this latter region we present the first microscopic computation characterizing the contribution of the edge terms. The microscopic theory reproduces the predictions of the superfluid eft , including the action, the form of the gap equation, and the energy of the system in a harmonic trap (which maps, via the non-relativistic state-operator correspondence, to the scaling dimension of the lowest operator of charge Q ). We additionally give the Wilsonian coefficients at leading order in N up to nnlo in the large-charge expansion.
