Abstract

We give a recursion relation for the second-quantized fermionic (bosonic) Halperin state, which avoids exact diagonalization of its two-component first-quantized parent Hamiltonian. We validate this formula by proving that the second-quantized Halperin state, as recursively defined in this formula, is indeed a zero mode of the corresponding second-quantized parent Hamiltonian and that it has the correct filling factor.

Bosonic Halperin (441) Fractional Quantum Hall Effect at Filling Factor ν = 2/5

Tian-Sheng Zeng, Liangdong Hu, Wei Kang Zhu

Quantum Hall effects with multicomponent internal degrees of freedom facilitate the playground of novel emergent topological orders. Here, we explore the correlated topological phases of two-component hardcore bosons at a total filling factor ν = 2/5 in topological lattice models under the interplay of intracomponent and intercomponent repulsions. We give the numerical demonstration of the emergence of Halperin (441) fractional quantum Hall effect based on exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. We elucidate its topological features including the degeneracy of the ground state, fractionally quantized topological Chern number matrix and chiral edge modes.

Halperin ( m′, m, n ) fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng

The Halperin $({m}^{\ensuremath{'}},m,n)$ fractional quantum Hall effects of two-component quantum particles are studied in topological checkerboard lattice models. Here for $m\ensuremath{\ne}{m}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, we demonstrate the emergence of fractional quantum hall effects with the associated $\mathbf{K}=\left(\begin{array}{cc}m+2& 1\\ 1& m\end{array}\right)$ matrix (even $m=2$ for boson and odd $m=3$ for fermion) in the presence of both strong intercomponent and intracomponent repulsions. Through exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we elucidate their topological fractionalizations, including (i) the $det|\mathbf{K}|=({m}^{2}+2m\ensuremath{-}1)$-fold ground-state degeneracies and (ii) fractionally quantized topological Chern number matrix $\mathbf{C}={\mathbf{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Our flat band model provides a paradigmatic example of a microscopic Hamiltonian featuring fractional quantum Hall effect with partial spinpolarization.

Boson-fermion mapping and off-diagonal long-range order in fractional quantum Hall effect

Xin Xie, Song He, S. Das Sarma

A new nonsingular mapping between bosons and fermions is introduced in connection with the fractional quantum Hall effect. The mapping connects a fermion system of filling ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathit{f}}$ to a boson system of filling ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathit{b}}$ through the relation ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathit{f}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$=${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathit{b}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$+1. The ground state of the boson system is shown to map accurately to that of the fermion system if and only if they are both incompressible quantum Hall states. The accuracy of the mapping is shown to be related to the validity of the mean-field theory. The relevance of this mapping to off-diagonal long-range order is discussed by numerically studying the binding of wave-function zeros to particle positions.

The Second Quantized Approach to the Study of Model Hamiltonians in Quantum Hall Regime

Li Chen

The study of model Hamiltonians, whose exact ground states are well known quantum Hall states, have been investigated solely in the literature from the point of view of first quantized approach in the last few decades. However, a second quantized approach to such Hamiltonians has not been taken in the same measure. In this dissertation, we study Haldane pseudopotential, which is the parent Hamiltonian of 1/M Laughlin state, and Trugman-Kivelson pseudopotential, which is the parent Hamiltonian of 2/5 unprojected Jain state. We find that the study of these Hamiltonians in their second quantized forms not only reproduces all properties of their zero modes already known in first quantized approach, but also sheds lights on general studies of such structures of these Hamiltonians as frustration free lattice Hamiltonians.

Competing states for the fractional quantum Hall effect in the 1/3-filled second Landau level

Jae‐Seung Jeong, Hantao Lu, Ki Hoon Lee +3 more

In this work, we investigate the nature of the fractional quantum Hall state in the 1/3-filled second Landau level (SLL) at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=7/3$ (and 8/3 in the presence of the particle-hole symmetry) via exact diagonalization in both torus and spherical geometries. Specifically, we compute the overlap between the exact 7/3 ground state and various competing states including (i) the Laughlin state, (ii) the fermionic Haffnian state, (iii) the antisymmetrized product state of two composite fermion seas at 1/6 filling, and (iv) the particle-hole (PH) conjugate of the ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state. All these trial states are constructed according to a guiding principle called the bilayer mapping approach, where a trial state is obtained as the antisymmetrized projection of a bilayer quantum Hall state with interlayer distance $d$ as a variational parameter. Under the proper understanding of the ground-state degeneracy in the torus geometry, the ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state can be obtained as the antisymmetrized projection of the Halperin (330) state. Specifically, while unclear at other momentum sectors, all degenerate copies of the ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state can be obtained by antisymmetrizing those of the Halperin (330) state at the zero-momentum sector, where both states occur as the exact ground states of their respective model Hamiltonians with the same degeneracy. Meanwhile, in the spherical geometry, the ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state is shown to be entirely equivalent to the antisymmetrized Halperin (330) state without any ground-state degeneracy issue. Similarly, it is proved in this work that the fermionic Haffnian state can be obtained as the antisymmetrized projection of the Halperin (551) state. The exact 7/3 ground state is obtained as a function of $\ensuremath{\delta}{V}_{1}^{(1)}$, the variation of the first-moment Haldane pseudopotential ${V}_{1}^{(1)}$ in the SLL with respect to the pure Coulomb interaction. It is shown that, while extremely accurate at sufficiently large positive $\ensuremath{\delta}{V}_{1}^{(1)}$, the Laughlin state loses its overlap with the exact 7/3 ground state significantly at $\ensuremath{\delta}{V}_{1}^{(1)}\ensuremath{\simeq}0$. At slightly negative $\ensuremath{\delta}{V}_{1}^{(1)}$, it is shown that the PH-conjugated ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state has a substantial overlap with the exact 7/3 ground state, which is the highest among the above four trial states. Around the Coulomb point, the energy spectrum exhibits an intriguing change from the spectrum with the Laughlin-type magnetoroton structure to that with the specific quasidegeneracy of the ground state, which is characteristic to the PH-conjugated ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state.

Fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level: The importance of inter-composite-fermion interaction

Csaba Tőke, Michael R. Peterson, Gun Sang Jeon +1 more

Exact diagonalization of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field in the disk geometry shows that there exists a filling-factor range in the second Landau level where the states significantly differ from those in the lowest Landau level. We show that the difference arises because the interaction between composite fermions is not negligible in higher Landau levels, as indicated by a substantial mixing between composite-fermion Landau-like levels, or $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ levels. We find that the exact ground state is well reproduced by composite-fermion theory with $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-level mixing incorporated at the lowest level of approximation. Using the same variational approach in the spherical geometry we estimate the excitation gap at filling $1∕3$ in the second Landau level (which corresponds to $7∕3$ of experiment).
