Abstract

Any quantum state is fully specified by the expectation values of a complete set of Hermitian operators. For a system of Majorana fermions, such as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, this set of observables can be taken to be all possible strings of Majorana fermion operators. The expectation values of these fermion strings in a thermal state depend erratically on the microscopic couplings that specify the SYK Hamiltonian, and we study their statistical properties directly in the thermodynamic limit using path integral techniques. When the underlying SYK Hamiltonian is chaotic, we find that these expectation values are well-modeled as real Gaussian random variables with zero mean and a variance that we compute. In contrast, for the integrable variant of SYK, we find that the expectation values are actually non-Gaussian. We then use these results to study measures of magic in the SYK thermal state, including the robustness of magic and the stabilizer Rényi entropy. We also show that our results can be quantitatively reproduced with a dual gravity calculation in the chaotic case at sufficiently low temperature. In this dual gravity model the variance of a given microscopic operator string is related to a wormhole geometry stabilized by a massive particle which is dual to the operator string. Our results thus provide a concrete and quantitative setting in which to study the relationship between randomness, wormholes and closed universes, as well as a holographic dual of quantum magic.

Chaotic-Integrable Transition in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, Bruno Loureiro, Aurelio Romero-Bermúdez +1 more

Quantum chaos is one of the distinctive features of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, N Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimensions with infinite-range two-body interactions, which is attracting a lot of interest as a toy model for holography. Here we show analytically and numerically that a generalized SYK model with an additional one-body infinite-range random interaction, which is a relevant perturbation in the infrared, is still quantum chaotic and retains most of its holographic features for a fixed value of the perturbation and sufficiently high temperature. However, a chaotic-integrable transition, characterized by the vanishing of the Lyapunov exponent and spectral correlations given by Poisson statistics, occurs at a temperature that depends on the strength of the perturbation. We speculate about the gravity dual of this transition.

Tuning quantum magic of pure quantum chaotic states with a gravity dual

Antonio M. García-García, Xianlong Liu, Jie-ping Zheng

Quantum magic is a fundamental resource that quantifies to what extent quantum states can be efficiently simulated on a classical computer. We study it for states constructed from the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) Hamiltonian with $N$ Majoranas by the fermionic anti-flatness (FAF). We show analytically that, in the large $N$ limit, the quantum magic of pure Kourkoulou-Maldacena (KM) states, dual to a quantum black hole with an end-of-world particle behind the horizon, is linear in $N$ with a slope, depending on the black hole temperature, that can be tuned between zero and $1/2$. By contrast, the FAF of Gaussian states evolved in real time with the SYK Hamitonian approaches $\approx N/2$ exponentially at a rate given by a multiple of the leading Ruelle-Pollicot resonance. Subleading corrections in $N$ for SYK energy eigenstates, computed numerically for $N \leq 54$ by combining Krylov subspace with GPU acceleration techniques, decay exponentially with $N$, but power-law if the SYK couplings are sparsified, and are order of magnitude larger for states close to the ground state, a region with an established gravity analogue. Our results offer new insights about the relation between quantum information, quantum chaos and low-dimension quantum gravity.

An SYK wormhole under the microscope

Valérie Bettaque, Martin Sasieta, Brian G. Swingle +1 more

We derive a large-N wormhole saddle in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model for the variance of the thermal one-point function of a heavy operator across realizations of the microscopic couplings. We propose that this saddle describes a double trumpet geometry. In the double-scaling limit, we express the wormhole as a transition amplitude in an emergent bulk Hilbert space of chords connecting the two boundaries. In the Schwarzian limit, the chords proliferate and the wormhole defines a quantum transition amplitude in the open-universe Hilbert space of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. Comparing the SYK wormhole amplitude with its counterpart in JT gravity coupled to matter provides a direct test of the heavy-operator randomness hypothesis in SYK. The microscopic SYK couplings specify the α-parameters of the wormhole. For a fixed realization of the couplings, we compute the observable in the corresponding α-state. We provide the bulk wavefunction of the associated half-wormhole, which exhibits erratic correlations in the length basis that do not self-average. We extend the bulk description to the Hilbert space of a closed universe. We point out that the correlation chords from which the wormhole geometry emerges structurally resemble local observer worldlines.

Non-stabilizerness of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Surajit Bera, Marco Schirò

We study the non-stabilizerness or quantum magic of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev ( \mathrm{SYK} S Y K ) model, a prototype example of maximally chaotic quantum matter. We show that the Majorana spectrum of its ground state, encoding the spreading of the state in the Majorana basis, displays a Gaussian distribution as expected for chaotic quantum many-body systems. We compare our results with the case of the \mathrm{SYK_2} S Y K 2 model, describing non-chaotic random free fermions, and show that the Majorana spectrum is qualitatively different in the two cases, featuring an exponential Laplace distribution for the \mathrm{SYK_2} S Y K 2 model rather than a Gaussian. From the spectrum we extract the Stabilizer Renyi Entropy (SRE) and show that for both models it displays a linear scaling with system size, with a prefactor that is larger for the SYK model, which has therefore higher magic. Finally, we discuss the spreading of quantun magic under unitary dynamics, as described by the evolution of the Majorana spectrum and the Stabilizer Renyi Entropy starting from a stabilizer state. We show that the SRE for the \mathrm{SYK_2} S Y K 2 model equilibrates rapidly, but that in the steady-state the interacting chaotic SYK model has more magic than the simple \mathrm{SYK_2} S Y K 2 . Our results suggest that the Majorana spectrum is qualitatively distinct in chaotic and non-chaotic many-body systems.

Quantum chaos transition in a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model dual to an eternal traversable wormhole

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, Tomoki Nosaka, Dario Rosa +1 more

It has been recently proposed by Maldacena and Qi that an eternal traversable wormhole in a two-dimensional anti--de Sitter space is the gravity dual of the low temperature limit of two Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models coupled by a relevant interaction (which we will refer to as spin operator). We study spectral and eigenstate properties of this coupled SYK model. We find that level statistics in the tail of the spectrum, and for a sufficiently weak coupling, show substantial deviations from random matrix theory, which suggests that traversable wormholes are not quantum chaotic. By contrast, for sufficiently strong coupling, corresponding to the black hole phase, level statistics are well described by random matrix theory. This transition in level statistics coincides approximately with a previously reported Hawking-Page transition for weak coupling. We show explicitly that this thermodynamic transition turns into a sharp crossover as the coupling increases. Likewise, this critical coupling also corresponds to the one at which the overlap between the ground state and the thermofield double state (TFD) is smallest. In the range of sizes we can reach by exact diagonalization, the ground state is well approximated by the TFD only in the strong coupling limit. This is due to the fact that the ground state is close to the eigenstate of the spin operator corresponding to the lowest eigenvalue which is an exact TFD at infinite temperature. In this region, the spectral density is separated into blobs centered around the eigenvalues of the spin operator. For weaker couplings, the exponential decay of coefficients in a tensor product basis, typical of the TFD, becomes power law. Finally, we also find that the total Hamiltonian has an additional discrete symmetry which has not been reported previously.

The coupled SYK model at finite temperature

Xiao-Liang Qi, Pengfei Zhang

Abstract Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which describes N randomly interacting Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimension, is found to be an solvable UV-complete toy model for holographic duality in nearly AdS2 dilaton gravity. Ref. [1] proposed a modified model by coupling two identical SYK models, which at low-energy limit is dual to a global AdS2 geometry. This geometry is an “eternal wormhole” because the two boundaries are causally connected. Increasing the temperature drives a Hawking-Page like transition from the eternal wormhole geometry to two disconnected black holes with coupled matter field. To gain more understanding of the coupled SYK model, in this work, we study the finite temperature spectral function of this system by numerical solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in real-time. We find in the low-temperature phase the system is well described by weakly interacting fermions with renormalized single-particle gap, while in the high temperature phase the system is strongly interacting and the single-particle peaks merge. We also study the q dependence of the spectral function.
