Abstract

Quantum technologies are powered by platforms to generate complex non-classical states of matter or light to realize applications. We investigate the non-classical properties of high-harmonic generation in semiconductors, an emerging photonic platform. Measuring the click statistics of three double-digit orders, we evaluate witness operators to certify the non-classicality of the generated states. We show that higher-order harmonics driven by a coherent laser are squeezed and entangled. The properties of the emission are well retrieved with an entangled Gaussian state model, obtained by numerical state optimization to multiple observables. Additionally, we perform inter-order heralded measurements to engineer the quantum state of the emission. The heralded states have distinct properties, showing anti-bunched photon statistics. Further, we witness the generation of a quantum non-Gaussian state, a resource highly relevant for quantum information. With this, we establish high-harmonic generation as a platform for generating quantum optical resources.

Evidence of the quantum-optical nature of high-harmonic generation

High-harmonic generation is a light up-conversion process occurring in a strong laser field, leading to coherent bursts of extreme ultrashort broadband radiation [1]. As a new perspective, we propose that ultrafast strong-field electronic or photonic processes such as high-harmonic generation can potentially generate non-classical states of light well before the decoherence of the system occurs [2, 3]. This could address fundamental challenges in quantum technology such as scalability, decoherence or the generation of massively entangled states [4]. Here, we report experimental evidence of the non-classical nature of the harmonic emission in several semiconductors excited by a femtosecond infrared laser. By investigating single- and double beam intensity cross-correlation [5], we measure characteristic, non-classical features in the single photon statistics. We observe two-mode squeezing in the generated harmonic radiation, which depends on the laser intensity that governs the transition from Super-Poissonian to Poissonian photon statistics. The measured violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality realizes a direct test of multipartite entanglement in high-harmonic generation [6]. This result is supported by the theory of multimodal detection and the Hamiltonian from which the effective squeezing modes of the harmonics can be derived [7, 8]. With this work, we show experimentally that high-harmonic generation is a new quantum bosonic platform that intrinsically produces non-classical states of light with unique features such as multipartite broadband entanglement or multimode squeezing. The source operates at room temperature using standard semiconductors and a standard commercial fiber laser, opening new routes for the quantum industry, such as optical quantum computing, communication and imaging.

Emergence of Gaussian entanglement and non-Gaussianity in high-harmonic generation driven by bright squeezed light

J. Rivera-Dean, M. Even-Tzur, M. F. Ciappina +3 more

High harmonic generation (HHG) is a highly nonlinear optical process in which radiation from a strong driving field is up-converted into its high-order harmonics. In atomic systems, this nonlinearity manifests itself through the intensity scaling of the emitted harmonics with the driving field strength. Despite the highly nonlinear nature of HHG, when the driving field is prepared in a classical Gaussian state and atomic depletion remains negligible, the quantum statistical properties of the generated harmonics retains classical Gaussian quantum statistics. Driving HHG with bright squeezed vacuum (BSV) light challenges this paradigm, as its enhanced field fluctuations can modify the statistical properties of the generated harmonics. In this work, we investigate the conditions under which BSV-driven HHG gives rise to non-classical Gaussian states, and identify the regimes where this Gaussian description breaks down. For bichromatic driving by a strong coherent field at frequency $ω$ and a perturbative BSV field at $2ω$, the even-harmonic response is approximately linear in the BSV quadrature, leading to non-classical multimode Gaussian entanglement in the harmonic field. We show that this state can be described as a distributed collective squeezed mode over the even-harmonic manifold, and characterize its covariance matrix, entanglement structure, and quantum teleportation fidelity as an operational benchmark. Our results highlight the potential of non-classically driven HHG as a platform for engineering Gaussian and non-Gaussian states of light in the extreme ultraviolet regime.

Evidence of the Quantum Optical Nature of High-Harmonic Generation

High-harmonic generation is a light up-conversion process occurring in a strong laser field, leading to coherent bursts of extreme ultrashort broadband radiation [Lewenstein , Phys. Rev. This could address fundamental challenges in quantum technology such as scalability, decoherence, or the generation of massively entangled states [Lewenstein , Luca Argenti Michael Chini, 27 (2024)]. Here, we report experimental evidence of the nonclassical nature of the harmonic emission in several semiconductors excited by a femtosecond infrared laser. By investigating single- and double-beam intensity cross-correlation [Loudon, Rep. Prog. Phys. , 913 (1980)], we measure characteristic nonclassical features in the single-photon statistics. We observe two-mode squeezing in the generated harmonic radiation, which depends on the laser intensity that governs the transition from super-Poissonian to Poissonian photon statistics. Nonclassical light generation and control from laser-driven semiconductor intraband excitations

Ivan Gonoskov, René Sondenheimer, Christian Hünecke +3 more

The generation of higher-order harmonic radiation originating from the interaction of intense laser pulses with matter is typically described semiclassically: While the electronic structure and dynamics of matter is described quantum mechanically, the intense light field is described classically---and accordingly the generated harmonic radiation. However, pioneering experiments on quantum optical properties of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in atomic gases from the group of P. Tzallas [I. Gonoskov et al., Sci. Rep. 6, 32821 (2016) and N. Tsatrafyllis et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 15170 (2017)], and theoretical investigations from the group of M. Lewenstein [M. Lewenstein et al., Nat. Phys. 17, 1104 (2021) and P. Stammer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 123603 (2022)] have impressively demonstrated that light's quantum properties are observable in the strong-field realm. In this paper, we develop a quantum optical description of HHG in a bulk semiconductor originating from the nonlinear Bloch current. This mechanism of HHG, known as the intraband current, constitutes the major contribution to the emission spectrum for harmonic with energies of quanta roughly below the bandgap. Under certain approximations, employing a quantum description of both light and matter, we obtain analytical solutions, which allow us to analyze the classical and quantum optical characteristics of the fundamental mode of light and the harmonic modes. We find intricate but sufficiently mild modifications of the photon statistics of the fundamental mode and coherent displacements depending on the parameters of the driving laser field. Similar to high-harmonic generation in atoms, the fundamental and emitted harmonic field modes are entangled. Moreover, our analytical model predicts parameter ranges where these quantum optical properties will be most pronounced, allowing protocols for quantum information processing with high photon numbers over a large range of frequencies.

Quantum-optical description of photon statistics and cross correlations in high-order harmonic generation

Ákos Gombkötő, Péter Földi, Sándor Varró

We present a study of photon statistics associated with high-order harmonic generation (HHG) involving one-mode and intermodal correlations of the high harmonic photons. The aim of the paper is to give insight into the nonclassical properties of high-order harmonic modes. To this end, we use a simplified model describing an elementary quantum emitter: the model of a two-level atom. While the material system is extremely simplified in this description, the conclusions and the methods may be generalized for more complex cases. Our primary interest is an effective model of HHG in which the exciting pulse is classical and the harmonics are quantized, although we touch upon the more generalized, fully quantized model as well. Evolution of the Mandel parameter, photon antibunching, squeezing, and cross correlations are calculated. Results imply that with respect to a single quantized emitter, nonclassicality of the harmonics is present: sub-Poissonian photon statistic and squeezing can characterize certain optical modes, while strong anticorrelation can also be present.

Quantum-optical signatures of solid-state high-harmonic generation driven by squeezed coherent states

Jingze Li, Zijian Lyu, Hao-Dong Liu +1 more

Recently, the intersection of quantum optics and attosecond physics has attracted growing interest. Here, we study the quantum optical signatures of high-harmonic generation (HHG) from solid-state material driven by squeezed coherent states. We find that squeezed coherent states can either enhance or suppress the HHG yields compared to that driven by coherent light, depending on the photon bunching or antibunching characteristics of driving light. The analysis on semiclassical trajectories indicates that the amplitude fluctuation alters the recombination energy, while the phase fluctuation affects the birth and recombination time of electron-hole pairs. By calculating the Husimi Q distributions of HHG, we demonstrate that the squeezing of the two conjugate quadratures of driving light asymmetrically influence the squeezing phase of harmonics. Surprisingly, we find that even under coherent driving, the harmonics still exhibit squeezing due to the highly nonlinear response of solid-state HHG, which was overlooked previously. Numerical calculations of the Mandel parameter are performed to characterize the photon statistics of emitted HHG arising from different microscopic mechanisms. The results indicate that intraband radiation can exhibit a super-Poissonian distribution, while interband emission exhibits sub-Poissonian distribution under coherent driving.
