An Efficient Algorithm to Sample Quantum Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Abstract

In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm to sample random sparse matrices to be used as check matrices for quantum Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. To ease the treatment, we mainly describe our algorithm as a technique to sample a dual-containing binary LDPC code, hence, a sparse matrix $\mathbf H\in\mathbb F_2^{r\times n}$ such that $\mathbf H\mathbf H^\top = \mathbf 0$. However, as we show, the algorithm can be easily generalized to sample dual-containing LDPC codes over non binary finite fields as well as more general quantum stabilizer LDPC codes. While several constructions already exist, all of them are somewhat algebraic as they impose some specific property (e.g., the matrix being quasi-cyclic). Instead, our algorithm is purely combinatorial as we do not require anything apart from the rows of $\mathbf H$ being sparse enough. In this sense, we can think of our algorithm as a way to sample sparse, self-orthogonal matrices that are as random as possible. Our algorithm is conceptually very simple and, as a key ingredient, uses Information Set Decoding (ISD) to sample the rows of $\mathbf H$, one at a time. The use of ISD is fundamental as, without it, efficient sampling would not be feasible. We give a theoretical characterization of our algorithm, determining which ranges of parameters can be sampled as well as the expected computational complexity. Numerical simulations and benchmarks confirm the feasibility and efficiency of our approach.

A Class of Quantum LDPC Codes Constructed From Finite Geometries

Salah A. Aly

Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are a significant class of classical codes with many applications. Several good LDPC codes have been constructed using random, algebraic, and finite geometries approaches, with containing cycles of length at least six in their Tanner graphs. However, it is impossible to design a self-orthogonal parity check matrix of an LDPC code without introducing cycles of length four. In this paper, a new class of quantum LDPC codes based on lines and points of finite geometries is constructed. The parity check matrices of these codes are adapted to be self- orthogonal with containing only one cycle of length four in each pair of two rows. Also, the column and row weights, and bounds on the minimum distance of these codes are given. As a consequence, these codes can be encoded using shift-register encoding algorithms and can be decoded using iterative decoding algorithms over various quantum depolarizing channels.

A class of check matrices constructed from Euclidean geometry and their application to quantum LDPC codes

Cao Dong, Yaoliang Song

A new class of quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes whose parity-check matrices are dual-containing matrices constructed based on lines of Euclidean geometries (EGs) is presented. The parity-check matrices of our quantum codes contain one and only one 4-cycle in every two rows and have better distance properties. However, the classical parity-check matrix constructed from EGs does not satisfy the condition of dual-containing. In some parameter conditions, parts of the rows in the matrix maybe have not any nonzero element in common. Notably, we propose four families of fascinating structure according to changes in all the parameters, and the parity-check matrices are adopted to satisfy the requirement of dual-containing. Series of matrix properties are proved. Construction methods of the parity-check matrices with dual-containing property are given. The simulation results show that the quantum LDPC codes constructed by this method perform very well over the depolarizing channel when decoded with iterative decoding based on the sum-product algorithm. Also, the quantum codes constructed in this paper outperform other quantum codes based on EGs.

Design of good quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Xu Dan

The existing design of quasi-cyclic(QC) low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes has not considered the problems of short length girths and the rows' dependency. The first problem leads to the BER performance of QC LDPC codes to be much poorer than that of randomly constructed LDPC codes, while the second problem leads to the difficulty of construction of generator matrices from parity-check matrices. To solve the first problem, the constraint conditions for designing the QC LDPC codes are proposed, and the dimension and shift factors of the circulant matrices of the given sparse parity-check matrix are adjusted according to the test results of both girth 4 and girth 6.To solve the second problem,an approach of irregular QC LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed approach is to replace some sub-matrices by zero matrices and identity matrices at special positions in the given sparse parity-check matrix so as to get a nonsingular square matrix for the construction of the generator matrix.Though adopting bidiagonal submatrices in parity-check matrix can solve the rows' dependency problem, many code words with low weights will occur, which leads to the BER performance can not be better by increasing code lengths.Examples are provided for the proposed design of QC LDPC codes, and computer simulation results show that the proposed QC LDPC codes achieve good BER performance.

A method for constructing parity-check matrices of non-binary quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Stanislav Kruglik, Valeriya Potapova, Alexey Frolov

An algorithm for constructing parity-check matrices of non-binary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (NB QC-LDPC) codes is proposed. The algorithm finds short cycles in the base matrix and tries to eliminate them by selecting the circulants and the elements of GF(q). Firstly the algorithm tries to eliminate the cycles with the smallest number edges going outside the cycle. The efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated by means of simulations. In particular, it was shown that NB QC-LDPC codes constructed with use of our algorithm loose less that 0.1 dB in comparison to the best NB LDPC codes.

A unified approach to optimization of LDPC codes for various communication scenarios

Irina E. Bocharova, Rolf Johannesson, Boris D. Kudryashov

A unified approach to construct and optimize codes determined by their sparse parity-check matrices is presented. Parity-check matrices of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC block codes are obtained by replacing the nonzero elements of a base (seed) matrix by circulants. Replacing the nonzero elements either by companion matrices of elements from a finite field GF(2m) or by a formal variable D gives parity-check matrices of binary images of nonbinary LDPC block codes and LDPC convolutional codes, respectively. A set of performance measures applicable to different classes of LDPC codes are considered and a greedy algorithm for code performance optimization is presented. For a few classes of LDPC codes examples of codes combining good error-correcting performance with compact representation are obtained. Moreover, a specific channel model can easily be embedded into the optimization loop. Thereby, the code can be optimized for a specific channel. The efficiency of such an optimization is demonstrated via an example of Faster Than Nyquist (FTN) signaling using LDPC codes.

New Classes of LDPC Stabilizer Codes Using Ideas from Matrix Scrambling

P. Tan, Jie Li

This paper proposes efficient construction of new classes of quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes through quasi-cyclic matrices, symmetric matrices and scrambling matrices. Unlike many of the existing quantum LDPC codes, the proposed construction is based on classic binary codes rather than quaternary codes, targets the general stabilizer formalism rather than the special CSS formalism, employs systematic approaches rather than computer search, and generates a rich class of codes of different rates and lengths rather than a single code. Simulations demonstrate that these new codes outperform the existing non-CSS LDPC stabilizer codes reported in literature.
