Abstract

We investigate the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain with non-reciprocal hopping amplitudes and asymmetric superconducting pairing. We work out the symmetry structure of the model and show that particle-hole symmetry (PHS) is preserved throughout the entire parameter regime. As a consequence of PHS, the topological phase transition point of a finite open chain coincides with that of the periodic (infinite) system. By explicitly constructing the zero-energy wave functions (Majorana modes), we show that Majorana modes necessarily occur as reciprocal localization pairs accumulating on opposite boundaries, whose combined probability density exhibits an exact cancellation of the non-Hermitian skin effect for the zero energy modes. Excited states, by contrast, generically display skin-effect localization, with particle and hole components accumulating at opposite ends of the system. At the level of bulk topology, we further construct a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant in restricted parameter regimes that correctly distinguishes the topological and trivial phases. Finally, we present the topological phase diagram of the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain across a broad range of complex parameters and delineate the associated phase boundaries.

Extended Kitaev chain with longer-range hopping and pairing

Antonio Alecce, Luca Dell’Anna

We consider the Kitaev chain model with finite and infinite range in the hopping and pairing parameters, looking in particular at the appearance of Majorana zero-energy modes and massive edge modes. We study the system both in the presence and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry, by means of topological invariants and exact diagonalization, disclosing very rich phase diagrams. In particular, for extended hopping and pairing terms, we can get as many Majorana modes at each end of the chain as the neighbors involved in the couplings. Finally, we generalize the transfer matrix approach useful to calculate the zero-energy Majorana states at the edges for a generic number of coupled neighbors.

Topological phases in a Kitaev chain with imbalanced pairing

C. Li, X. Z. Zhang, Gang Zhang +1 more

We systematically study a Kitaev chain with imbalanced pair creation and annihilation, which is introduced by non-Hermitian pairing terms. An exact phase diagram shows that the topological phase is still robust under the influence of the conditional imbalance. The gapped phases are characterized by a topological invariant, the extended Zak phase, which is defined by the biorthonormal inner product. Such phases are destroyed at the points where the coalescence of ground states occurs, associated with the time-reversal symmetry breaking. We find that the Majorana edge modes also exist in an open chain in the time-reversal symmetry-unbroken region, demonstrating the bulk-edge correspondence in such a non-Hermitian system.

Topological properties and Majorana Multiplicity in Zigzag Kitaev Chain

Rajiv Kumar, Panch Ram, Levan Chotorlishvili +1 more

We investigate the spectral and topological properties of a zigzag Kitaev chain constructed from two diagonally coupled one dimensional Kitaev chains with a zero and finite superconducting pairing phase difference. Using a Bogoliubov-de Gennes formulation, we analyze the energy spectrum, distribution of Majorana zero modes (MZMs), the quasi-particle dispersion, and the winding number, respectively. For a zero phase difference, the resulting energy spectrum shows topological phases with two, four MZMs, and trivial regions. The phases of gap closure determine the topological phase boundaries. In particular, for the phase difference between $φ=π$, the degeneracy of MZMs is partially lifted, leading to modified topological phases compared to the case $φ=0$. The topological and trivial phase boundaries are further confirmed by evaluating the quasi-particle dispersion and the topological invariant, namely the winding number. We show that the zigzag Kitaev chain contributes independently to the total winding number $ν= 1$ and $2$, giving rise to distinct topological phases that support two and four MZMs. The $ν= 0$ gives rise to a trivial region. The energy spectrum of systems corroborates the analytical phase boundaries and reveals characteristics associated with hybridization, enabling us to obtain the complete phase diagram of the zigzag model. Our results establish the zigzag Kitaev chain as a minimal platform for engineering MZM quantum computations, with potential applications in the study of topological phases and Majorana based qubit physics.

Symmetry as a route to generalized bosonic Kitaev chains

Gideon Lee, Tony Jin, Aashish A. Clerk

The bosonic Kitaev chain (BKC) model is a deceptively simple looking quadratic pairing Hamiltonian. Despite being purely Hermitian, it exhibits a number of striking non-Hermitian topological phenomena, including skin effects. We show here how symmetries play a key role in this model, and how identifying these allows one to develop generalized BKC-like models. We emphasize the surprising fact that any quadratic bosonic pairing Hamiltonian with a sublattice (chiral) symmetry necessarily has a dynamical matrix with an effective time reversal symmetry. This symmetry is unrelated to physical time-reversal, but enables non-trivial topological invariants. We also discuss how this symmetry is unrelated to another key property of the BKC, the decoupling of quadrature dynamics. This feature can instead be connected to a distinct symmetry, namely an effective particle-hole symmetry of the dynamical matrix. We discuss non-trivial generalized BKC models that only keep one of these two effective symmetries intact. We also provide a classification of all translationally-invariant 1D pairing Hamiltonians, and show connections between the BKC and a well-studied non-Hermitian fermionic system, the symplectic Hatano-Nelson model.

Asymmetric localization of Majorana zero modes in extended Kitaev chains

J Liu, Fadi Sun

Abstract In the original Kitaev chain, Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at opposite edges have the same localization length. Here it is shown that a Hermitian finite-range extended Kitaev chain can instead support asymmetrically localized MZMs with different left and right localization lengths. Such asymmetry is excluded when all pairing amplitudes share a common phase, so the effect requires a genuinely extended model beyond the nearest-neighbor Kitaev chain. For the minimal next-nearest-neighbor case, the asymmetry originates from the inequivalence of the left and right boundary equations, which leads to different selections of decaying bulk solutions and yields a necessary-and-sufficient condition for its occurrence. A transfer-matrix reformulation further shows that the asymmetry is robust against sufficiently weak disorder preserving the block-triangular structure. For finite chains, the hybridization-induced energy splitting is exponentially small and controlled by the shorter localization length.

Analytical classification of Majorana zero-mode spatial profiles in extended Kitaev chains: probability maxima can shift inward

Vijay Pathak, Vaishnav Mallya, Sujit Sarkar

Topological phases in one-dimensional superconducting systems are commonly characterized by symmetry-protected invariants. These invariants determine the number of Majorana zero-energy boundary modes but do not specify their corresponding spatial structure. In this work, we present an analytical study of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in an extended Kitaev chain with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor couplings. By expressing the Hamiltonian in the Majorana basis, we derive a recursion relation whose characteristic roots completely determine the spatial structure of the zero modes and yield closed-form expressions for their amplitudes. We show that, even within a single topological phase, the MZMs can exhibit qualitatively distinct decay behaviors-monotonic decay, oscillatory decay, and perfectly localized states. Remarkably, boundary-origin MZMs need not have their maximum probability at the edge of the chain. They can instead exhibit maxima at interior lattice sites with an exponentially decaying envelope from either side of the maxima. Furthermore, the characteristic roots determine the length scale required for finite chains to reproduce the semi-infinite MZM structure, providing a direct link between Hamiltonian parameters, finite-size effects, and experimentally observable spatial profiles.
