Abstract

We study the average bipartite entanglement entropy of Haar-random pure states in quantum many-body systems with global $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry, constrained to fixed total spin $J$ and magnetization $J_z = 0$. Focusing on spin-$\tfrac12$ lattices and subsystem fractions $f < \frac{1}{2}$, we derive a asymptotic expression for the average entanglement entropy up to constant order in the system volume $V$. In addition to the expected leading volume law term, we prove the existence of a $\frac{1}{2}\log V$ finite-size correction resulting from the scaling of the Clebsch-Gordon coefficients and compute explicitly the $O(1)$ contribution reflecting angular-momentum coupling within magnetization blocks. Our analysis uses features of random matrix ensembles and provides a fully analytical treatment for arbitrary spin densities, thereby extending Page type results to non-Abelian sectors and clarifying how $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry shapes average entanglement.

Average pure-state entanglement entropy in spin systems with SU(2) symmetry

Rohit Patil, Lucas Hackl, George R. Fagan +1 more

We study the effect that the SU(2) symmetry, and the rich Hilbert space structure that it generates in lattice spin systems, has on the average entanglement entropy of highly excited eigenstates of local Hamiltonians and of random pure states. Focusing on the zero total magnetization sector $({J}_{z}=0)$ for different fixed total spin $J$, we argue that the average entanglement entropy of highly excited eigenstates of quantum-chaotic Hamiltonians and of random pure states has a leading volume-law term whose coefficient ${s}_{A}$ depends on the spin density $j=J/(\mathfrak{j}L)$, with ${s}_{A}(j\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0)=ln(2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathfrak{j}+1)$ and ${s}_{A}(j\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1)=0$, where $\mathfrak{j}$ is the microscopic spin. We provide numerical evidence that ${s}_{A}$ is smaller in highly excited eigenstates of integrable interacting Hamiltonians, which lends support to the expectation that the average eigenstate entanglement entropy can be used as a diagnostic of quantum chaos and integrability for Hamiltonians with non-Abelian symmetries. In the context of Hamiltonian eigenstates we consider spins $\mathfrak{j}=\frac{1}{2}$ and 1, while for our calculations based on random pure states we focus on the spin $\mathfrak{j}=\frac{1}{2}$ case.

Non-Abelian symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy

Eugenio Bianchi A, Pietro Donà, Rishabh Kumar

We introduce a mathematical framework for symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy with a non-Abelian symmetry group. To obtain a reduced density matrix that is block-diagonal in the non-Abelian charges, we define subsystems operationally in terms of subalgebras of invariant observables. We derive exact formulas for the average and the variance of the typical entanglement entropy for the ensemble of random pure states with fixed non-Abelian charges. We focus on compact, semisimple Lie groups. We show that, compared to the Abelian case, new phenomena arise from the interplay of locality and non-Abelian symmetry, such as the asymmetry of the entanglement entropy under subsystem exchange, which we show in detail by computing the Page curve of a many-body system with SU(2) S U ( 2 ) symmetry.

Average entanglement entropy of midspectrum eigenstates of quantum-chaotic interacting Hamiltonians

Maksymilian Kliczkowski, Rafał Świętek, Lev Vidmar +1 more

To which degree the average entanglement entropy of midspectrum eigenstates of quantum-chaotic interacting Hamiltonians agrees with that of random pure states is a question that has attracted considerable attention in the recent years. While there is substantial evidence that the leading (volume-law) terms are identical, which and how subleading terms differ between them is less clear. Here we carry out state-of-the-art full exact diagonalization calculations of clean spin-1/2 XYZ and XXZ chains with integrability breaking terms to address this question in the absence and presence of U(1) symmetry, respectively. We first introduce the notion of maximally chaotic regime, for the chain sizes amenable to full exact diagonalization calculations, as the regime in Hamiltonian parameters in which the level spacing ratio, the distribution of eigenstate coefficients, and the entanglement entropy are closest to the random matrix theory predictions. In this regime, we carry out a finite-size scaling analysis of the subleading terms of the average entanglement entropy of midspectrum eigenstates when different fractions ν of the spectrum are included in the average. We find indications that, for ν→0, the magnitude of the negative O(1) correction is only slightly greater than the one predicted for random pure states. For finite ν, following a phenomenological approach, we derive a simple expression that describes the numerically observed ν dependence of the O(1) deviation from the prediction for random pure states.

Typical entanglement in anyon chains: Page curves beyond Lie group symmetries

Yale Yauk, Lucas Hackl, Alexander Hahn

We study bipartite entanglement statistics in one-dimensional anyon chains, whose Hilbert spaces are constrained by fusion rules of unitary pre-modular categories. Our setup generalizes previous frameworks on symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy for non-abelian Lie group symmetries to the setting of quantum groups. We derive analytical expressions for the average anyonic entanglement entropy and its variance. Surprisingly, despite the constrained Hilbert space structure, the large $L$ expansion has no universal $O(\sqrt{L})$ or $O(1)$ symmetry-type corrections except for a subleading topological correction term that produces a Page curve asymmetry. We further show that the variance decays exponentially with system size, establishing the typicality. Numerical simulations of the integrable and quantum-chaotic golden chain Hamiltonian show that chaotic mid-spectrum eigenstates match the Haar-random predictions, supporting the use of eigenstate entanglement as a diagnostic of quantum chaos. Our results establish the anyonic Page curve as an appropriate chaotic benchmark in topological many-body systems and connect anyonic entanglement to Page-type universality in quantum many-body physics.

Symmetry-resolved Page curves

Sara Murciano, Pasquale Calabrese, Lorenzo Piroli

Given a statistical ensemble of quantum states, the corresponding Page curve quantifies the average entanglement entropy associated with each possible spatial bipartition of the system. In this work, we study a natural extension in the presence of a conservation law and introduce the symmetry-resolved Page curves, characterizing average bipartite symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies. We derive explicit analytic formulas for two important statistical ensembles with a $U(1)$-symmetry: Haar-random pure states and random fermionic Gaussian states. In the former case, the symmetry-resolved Page curves can be obtained in an elementary way from the knowledge of the standard one. This is not true for random fermionic Gaussian states. In this case, we derive an analytic result in the thermodynamic limit based on a combination of techniques from random-matrix and large-deviation theories. We test our predictions against numerical calculations and discuss the subleading finite-size corrections.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in a non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state

Mark J. Arildsen, Valentin Crépel, Nicolas Regnault +1 more

Symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy provides a powerful framework for probing the internal structure of quantum many-body states by decomposing entanglement into contributions from distinct symmetry sectors. In this work, we apply matrix product state techniques to study the bosonic, non-Abelian Moore-Read quantum Hall state, enabling precise numerical evaluation of both the full counting statistics and symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies. Our results reveal an approximate equipartition of entanglement among symmetry sectors, consistent with theoretical expectations and subject to finite-size corrections. The results also show that these expectations for symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy remain valid in the case of a non-Abelian state where the topological sectors cannot be distinguished by the Abelian U ( 1 ) symmetry alone, and where neutral and charged modes possess distinct velocities. We additionally perform a detailed comparison of the entanglement spectrum with predictions from the Li-Haldane conjecture, finding remarkable agreement, and enabling a more precise understanding of the effects of the distinct neutral and charged velocities. This not only provides a stringent test of the conjecture but also highlights its explanatory power in understanding the origin and structure of finite-size effects across different symmetry sectors.
