Abstract

We introduce a mathematical framework for symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy with a non-Abelian symmetry group. To obtain a reduced density matrix that is block-diagonal in the non-Abelian charges, we define subsystems operationally in terms of subalgebras of invariant observables. We derive exact formulas for the average and the variance of the typical entanglement entropy for the ensemble of random pure states with fixed non-Abelian charges. We focus on compact, semisimple Lie groups. We show that, compared to the Abelian case, new phenomena arise from the interplay of locality and non-Abelian symmetry, such as the asymmetry of the entanglement entropy under subsystem exchange, which we show in detail by computing the Page curve of a many-body system with SU(2) S U ( 2 ) symmetry.

Random matrix prediction of average entanglement entropy in non-Abelian symmetry sectors

Anwesha Chakraborty, Lucas Hackl, Mario Kieburg

We study the average bipartite entanglement entropy of Haar-random pure states in quantum many-body systems with global $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry, constrained to fixed total spin $J$ and magnetization $J_z = 0$. Focusing on spin-$\tfrac12$ lattices and subsystem fractions $f < \frac{1}{2}$, we derive a asymptotic expression for the average entanglement entropy up to constant order in the system volume $V$. In addition to the expected leading volume law term, we prove the existence of a $\frac{1}{2}\log V$ finite-size correction resulting from the scaling of the Clebsch-Gordon coefficients and compute explicitly the $O(1)$ contribution reflecting angular-momentum coupling within magnetization blocks. Our analysis uses features of random matrix ensembles and provides a fully analytical treatment for arbitrary spin densities, thereby extending Page type results to non-Abelian sectors and clarifying how $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry shapes average entanglement.

Typical entanglement entropy with charge conservation

Eugenio Bianchi, Pietro Donà, Erick Muiño

We consider a many-body Hilbert space with a fixed global charge and show that the typical entanglement entropy of a subsystem, at the leading and subleading order in the thermodynamic limit, can be expressed in terms of a single quantity which represents the local thermal entropy at fixed charge density. We find a general formula which applies both to abelian U(1) symmetry and non-abelian SU(2) symmetry, including the case of a local Hilbert space which transforms under a general reducible representation of the symmetry group. We illustrate the general formula with model systems and discuss the relevance of the results as a probe of quantum chaos for physical Hamiltonians.

Non-Abelian entanglement asymmetry in random states

Angelo Russotto, Filiberto Ares, Pasquale Calabrese

A bstract The entanglement asymmetry measures the extent to which a symmetry is broken within a subsystem of an extended quantum system. Here, we analyse this quantity in Haar random states for arbitrary compact, semi-simple Lie groups, building on and generalising recent results obtained for the U(1) symmetric case. We find that, for any group, the average entanglement asymmetry vanishes in the thermodynamic limit when the subsystem is smaller than its complement. When the subsystem and its complement are of equal size, the entanglement asymmetry jumps to a finite value, indicating a sudden transition of the subsystem from a fully symmetric state to one devoid of any symmetry. For larger subsystem sizes, the entanglement asymmetry displays a logarithmic scaling with a coefficient fixed by the dimension of the group. We also investigate the fluctuations of the entanglement asymmetry, which tend to zero in the thermodynamic limit. We check our findings against exact numerical calculations for the SU(2) and SU(3) groups. We further discuss their implications for the thermalisation of isolated quantum systems and black hole evaporation.

Typical entanglement in anyon chains: Page curves beyond Lie group symmetries

Yale Yauk, Lucas Hackl, Alexander Hahn

We study bipartite entanglement statistics in one-dimensional anyon chains, whose Hilbert spaces are constrained by fusion rules of unitary pre-modular categories. Our setup generalizes previous frameworks on symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy for non-abelian Lie group symmetries to the setting of quantum groups. We derive analytical expressions for the average anyonic entanglement entropy and its variance. Surprisingly, despite the constrained Hilbert space structure, the large $L$ expansion has no universal $O(\sqrt{L})$ or $O(1)$ symmetry-type corrections except for a subleading topological correction term that produces a Page curve asymmetry. We further show that the variance decays exponentially with system size, establishing the typicality. Numerical simulations of the integrable and quantum-chaotic golden chain Hamiltonian show that chaotic mid-spectrum eigenstates match the Haar-random predictions, supporting the use of eigenstate entanglement as a diagnostic of quantum chaos. Our results establish the anyonic Page curve as an appropriate chaotic benchmark in topological many-body systems and connect anyonic entanglement to Page-type universality in quantum many-body physics.

Eigenstate chaos in the presence of non-Abelian symmetries

Siddharth Jindal, Pavan Hosur

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) posits that energy eigenstates encode local properties of the microcanonical ensemble. Motivated by recent interest in the physics of non-commuting conserved charges and the non-Abelian ETH, we study chaotic eigenstates in the presence of symmetries described by general compact Lie groups, such as SU(2). By applying non-Abelian symmetry resolution, we develop a non-Abelian microcanonical entropy and relate this entropy to the entanglement entropy of chaotic eigenstates. We find that microcanonical entropy is closely related to the symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy, which differs from conventional entanglement entropy by a universal logarithmic correction. Our results depend on the global Casimir charge, e.g. total spin. At finite charge density, we find a logarithmic enhancement to conventional entanglement entropy. At zero density, we find no such correction to entanglement entropy, but a logarithmic reduction to microcanonical entropy and symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy. We discuss the implications of our approach for non-Abelian eigenstate thermalization.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in Wess-Zumino-Witten models

Pasquale Calabrese, Jérôme Dubail, Sara Murciano

A bstract We consider the problem of the decomposition of the Rényi entanglement entropies in theories with a non-abelian symmetry by doing a thorough analysis of Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models. We first consider SU(2) k as a case study and then generalise to an arbitrary non-abelian Lie group. We find that at leading order in the subsystem size L the entanglement is equally distributed among the different sectors labelled by the irreducible representation of the associated algebra. We also identify the leading term that breaks this equipartition: it does not depend on L but only on the dimension of the representation. Moreover, a log log L contribution to the Rényi entropies exhibits a universal prefactor equal to half the dimension of the Lie group.
